Holy. God. Is this place good. And I really appreciated our hostess's honest recommendations... she steered us away from dishes she considered too 'Americanized' and lacking authentic flavor. We split the calamari, gyoza and then had two different ramen - all outstanding. But the star of the show had to be the Momoko tea - life changing. I want one of these in Detroit, please!!! read more

The atmosphere was really cool to be in. The seating I wasn't much of a fan of, too compact for my tastes, my biggest complaint is probably the food, the ramen itself was kinda bland and it might be because I didn't like what I ordered but it ended up making me and my friend mildly sick when we got home later that night, she threw hers up and it was still undigested and I've had cramps and many visits to the bathroom. The karaage and takoyaki were pretty good at least. The servers were alright nothing much to note there, I'm only giving 2 stars for the atmosphere really. read more

Absolutely LOVE Yatagarasu. The ambience of the restaurant is authentic, calm, and traditional. The chairs and table setting are small, but it's never posed a problem. Service can lack at times, but this place is in high demand so it's no worry. Highly recommend the rich garlic tonkotsu ramen, pork & beef gyoza, takoyaki, & corn. All of the mochi is delicious, and if you're in the mood for tea with your dessert, the Yume tea is remarkable. You can taste the hints of peach and rose petals in the tea. Cute place! read more

Fabulous tastes in ramen. What a lucky find. Thx for a great meal. And very nice space

Tonkatsu ramen was great. So tasty and not too heavy and rich. The noodle were perfect and not mushy. Pork belly had a nice sweet and slightly tangy flavor. The price was reasonable and the waiter was efficient. Nice atmosphere. We went in the afternoon and can see it getting crowded on weekend nights. read more

Honestly, this place has amazing ramen, amazing chicken karaage (Japanese fried chicken bites), amazing sauce to go with it, and mouthwatering grilled eel over rice. One of the few places I visited in Indiana and I was incredibly impressed. I would highly recommend if you are craving Japanese cuisine. The price is decent, a little more on the expensive side for ramen but it's understandable since it's in the Midwest where it's less common. I was so happy with my food. I could not stop raving about how delicious it was. Every bite was not filling me up but simply creating an inner desire to crave even more. The amount of grilled eel you get is a good amount and it really just reminded me of the eel I had in Japan! Don't know how it's made, but even if it was frozen, they did it right!!!(LOL) the servers are very nice as well. I honestly had no complaints about anything. 5 stars seriously for the win. read more

What a great find! My husband and I both had the veggie ramen. The broth was very flavorful and presentation was excellent. A friend told that Lafeyette had great Ramen and I made it a point to drop by to test it out if I ever passed by. I did and my friend was right! Yatagarasu has Ramen that can compete with the big cities. Ramen 5/5 - Black Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen. The broth were excellent with the intense garlic kick infused into the deep, creamy and smoky flavors from the long hours of extracting it from the bones. Interior 5/5 - Love the chic brick and timber interior, very rustic and raw feel. Staff 5/5 - Quick efficient service with a smile. Price 4/5 - A little dear for the Ramen, but the lunch meal with a drink and side dish for $15 redeems it a little. Parking 5/5 - plenty of free parkings outside. Rather pay for food not parking! read more

Oh my Ramen god. The Volcano Spicy Ramen has stolen my heart. Don't be ashamed to let your mother or your loved ones know you will be frequenting without them. So spicy and savory. Added some extra ramen and Pork Chasu to complete it. Punched in the mouth with flavor. This place is dark, wouldn't bring a huge group, unless you want to be separated. Let's get one thing straight: this is probably one of the better ramens within a decent drive from Purdue. However, paying $14 for a medium sized bowl of ramen is not necessarily my style, nor was the rich garlic tonkatsu anything mind-blowing. That being said, I appreciated the add-ons that came with the ramen (pickled ginger, seaweed, egg, two thin albeit delicious slices of pork). They also have good customer service, as although for a table of 6 on a Sunday afternoon there was easily a 30+ minute wait, the server apologized for their tardiness and gave us free mochi ice cream, which is a nice touch. read more

First coming in the space is pretty cool. It is dark and dim lighted but still the atmosphere is good. The seating is a bit small but it affected me more so because I'm a bigger person. The service was good and I appreciate the waitresses walking me through the menu and answering my questions since it was my first time there. I decided to try the volcano ramen because it allegedly was the hottest thing on the menu. When I received the food the presentation was messy with spices just thrown all around the bowl. When I went to try it, the food wasn't spicy at all to me. I even tried the spice by itself and couldn't taste any heat, I believe it was just paprika and mild crushed pepper. The pork in the ramen was really sweet and didn't balance well with the rest of the food. The broth was thick mainly due to all the spices they added. Nothing really had flavor to stand alone nor mix well. I couldn't finish it not because it was too "hot" but because it was just not enjoyable to eat. The waitress recommended I try their garlic ramen next time which I'm not opposed to coming back. I just think the volcano ramen needs work because added a TON of spices in and around the bowl doesn't make it taste good or hot if the flavors don't blend together. read more

Loved their spicy miso ramen! They had such a cool vibe going in the restaurant and their minimalist menu is something I love. The wait staff was super attentive to our needs and the food was delicious. I ordered a seaweed salad and the spicy miso ramen. My husband got the rich garlic ramen. The broths were so rich in flavor and super delicious. They also have add-one for a small fee, for example, I ordered spinach to be added in my soup for just $1. We also ordered gyoza for our daughter and she gobbled them all up. They were also kind enough to bring an extra bowl, so that we could share our ramen with her. I will definitely return, maybe even this weekend! read more

Big bowls of Yummy goodness finally settles into the Main St. flare. Visited my Alma mater to see friends and to my surprise discovered that a new ramen shop recently opened in downtown Lafayette. Thrilled about a new culinary experience in a place I called home for 5 years, my friends and I cheerfully strolled towards Main Street and the new ramen spot, Yatagarasu. First, the inside the restaurant was a great blend of modern Japanese & hipster culture. Sitting near the kitchen, my friends and I were continuously entertained by the hussle&bussle of the kitchen as gigantic bowls of ramen left its window. Simple and not pretentious, the 2-page menu provided enough variety from their small plate appetizers, yakitori options, and roughly 10 ramen options to give both ramen experts and newbies all they needed. The waiter was attentive and gave me helpful advice as I deliberated over my options. In the end, I went with their Miso Spicy Ramen (w/ an extra egg) as well as an order of yakitori and Gyzoa. First the apps. The yakitori was beautifully presented on a single small plate with a lemon slice and a dry spice sprinkled on the plate. However, it was more visually beautiful than it tasted as the yakitori was middle of the road, nothing bad but nothing great. The Gyzoa were far better and had perfectly crispy bottoms which were nicely complimented by their soft sides. Though they didn't taste like they were made in-house, tasting similar to the frozen gyzoa I buy at the grocery store, but nevertheless they were quite tasty and cooked well. The ramen was excellent, chewy with a bomb of umami, but it was those two perfectly poached, running tea eggs which absolutely stole the show for me. Each bite was a umami bomb of delight. A clustery-soy flavor that oozed creaminess and spoke of pure egg-ecstasy. For the price and experience, you really cant beat Yatagarasu. I highly, Highly recommend you visit them soon and often. We all know how often restaurants turn over on Main st, so lets keep this one around for a long time people. read more

Wonderful service, with a wonderful atmosphere. I had the vegetarian ramen. I was surprised they don't tell you it has a different type of noodle- which kind of left me a little disappointed. It's very very salty. I think they should make a small, medium or large bowl because I hardly made a dent in my meal and was completely full. I'm a vegetarian and I believe they could make this a little bit better and more flavorful. I also think they need more add ons for the ramen. But other than that it's good. read more

Everyone was polite, menu offered cuisine basics and expected options to please a pallet, our appetizer and main entrees arrived super hot and were perfectly done. I want to try the whole menu and averaging $8-13 an item is well priced for the quality and serving size. I had the Miso Spicy Ramen, probably will be the best dish. The takoyaki is also super tasty and arguably worth the overpriced app payout for 6 deep fried seafood spheres. Atmosphere is tight and gets crowded quickly but well decorated and feeling much better and chic than most downtown places. One of my favorite places in the area. read more

This is a great ramen joint with a smallish selection of izakaya choices. First the ramen - great noodles - chewy and perfectly balanced with the broth. We had the shoyu broth... Perfectly balanced... Not as thick as the common Tonkotsu broth but just the right richness. The pork chashu has nice bite to it and full of meat (vs. fat from just the pork belly). We also ordered the sashimi combo - really fresh salmon and tuna, gyoza (just OK), chicken karagge (great crunch and tasty), fried calamari (this is the baby octopus - not the sliced ones), the yakitori, chicken wing and chicken skin.. The last three were just meh... and SUPER expensive as the portion is tiny Like the chicken wing is a 1/2 of a wing for $3! Not worth the price but the rest is quite good and reasonable prices... BUT - you come here for the ramen... and they delivered read more

Interesting ramen joint in downtown Lafayette. Cool brick decor with appropriate Japanese touches - nice vibe. To the one reviewer, the picture by the kitchen is anime. It was very busy when we came for dinner, we waited a long time for a four top, we were quoted half an hour which ended up being an hour. It seems more of the tables are two tops and there wasn't quick turnover of the four tops. Service was a bit mixed as they were clearly slammed and the staff seemed inexperienced. (I was asked if I wanted ice with my Asahi, and no spoons came out with the ramen bowls, we had to ask for them.) They have a fairly big menu for a ramen place, but alas were sold out of a number of items, like the edamame. We started with the pork buns. They were $5 each. Usually you get two pork buns in an order, so it seemed a bit overpriced. The bun itself was a bit wider then usual with a single thin slice of chasu and lettuce. The chasu seemed to have some strong flavor (more to come on the chasu) but these weren't anywhere near the best pork buns I've had. Had the garlicky tonkotsu ramen. It's a big bowl with a fair amount of toppings and great visual presentation. Most of the toppings were pretty good. I enjoyed the half boiled eggs, don't think they were listed on the menu, so that was a nice surprise. The chasu however left something to be desired. While it had a nice visual appeal, and there were two slices, it was clear that some type of brown barbecue sauce was painted on the chasu. I've never seen that approach before. And the chasu itself was nothing special, fairly thin, and not browned, with this flavor pow coming from the painted on barbecue sauce. Disappointing, and probably explains the pork buns as well... The broth was something else too. When they say garlicky, they aren't kidding, the garlick was a bit overpowering the tonkotsu broth. The tonkotsu broth itself was disappointing, which is too bad because the broth is really the soul of the ramen. I normally expect a deep creamy broth from the pork bones cooking for a long time. This broth had a lot of flavor but appeared quiet watery at it's base with strong flavor and spices added for flavor pow. The noodles were a decent quantity but very ordinary. So... an interesting bowl of ramen, very attractive visually and lots of flavor pow! Seems like something that someone like Guy Fieri would do if he did ramen, but not really an authentic tonkotsu ramen. And as noted, big city prices. However a cute place with a nice vibe and likely the best ramen in the area. read more

New favorite ramen place! The cozy atmosphere of the venue was inviting and the art on the wall caught my eye. The menu is very straight forward, and the portions are fairly generous. The staff was very patient and helpful in explaining items on the menu to us. The food was prepared quickly, which is always a win for me when you're with a group (4 people). If you're not comfortable eating with chopsticks, be sure to ask for a fork! We all found our food to be delicious, including my girlfriend who is a picky eater. Yatagarasu - Tonkatsu - Ramen Near Me - Lafayette, Indiana

I've been here about five times now, and I've got to say, it's so nice to have some authentic ramen in Lafayette. I first started to really get into ramen this summer while I was living in Dallas, Texas and ramen places were a dime a dozen. Lafayette, however, doesn't have as many options. Luckily, Yatagarasu is a solid choice. My go-to order is the miso ramen. Simple, but delicious. It's savory and hearty while not overbearing. The pork is tender and moist, and I just wish there was more of it. I love the inclusion of a soft boiled egg. It adds to the depth of flavor. The other stand-outs here are the small plates. We usually order 2-3 of them as appetizers. The star, for me, are the crispy Brussels sprouts. They're, as the name implies, crispy, with a nice sprinkling of salt and other seasoning. Prices are pretty decent here. Ramen runs around $13, but it's a generous serving. Service is good, and there have only been a couple occasions where the food seemed to take a while. Overall, if you're a ramen fan, and you're in the Purdue/Lafayette area, I have no problems recommending this location. read more

Delicious ramen in Indiana! My fiancé and I stopped here on our way back from Chicago, and we were delighted by how wonderfully tasty our ramen was. The aesthetic of the shop is industrial with hints of Japanese art and culture scattered around the restaurant. My fiancé got the volcano spicy ramen, which is for insane people who love spice, while I got the spicy miso ramen. Our meal came out incredibly quick, like within 5-10 minutes. I was amazed by how pretty everything looked as each of our bowls had a plethora of toppings! My fiancé loved his volcano ramen and was dying by the end of it. His broth was thicker and was essentially coated in chili flakes so I recommend only getting the volcano ramen if you can REALLY handle spice. For me, the spicy miso ramen had just the right amount of spice and flavor, and all the toppings really complemented the ramen broth. The soft boiled egg was perfectly cooked and marinated. The highlight of the dish was the chashu! It was gingery and perfectly tender. I could've eaten a rice bowl with just the chashu (which they have as an option)! Our server was great and attentive too! No complaints about my meal at all, and I'm still dreaming about that chashu. read more

This was my first time trying traditional ramen and I was really impressed with the quality and flavors! The ramens we ordered were deeply flavorful, fresh, and savory. They have the seating area partitioned for COVID which gives it a more intimate feeling. I'm not giving it 5-stars because there wasn't much explanation of the different ramen types, ingredients, etc. from the menu or the server. That's probably fine for diners with a lot of experience eating ramen, but will be a little hard for others to fully understand what they're ordering. Other than that, we were very impressed with the ramen and will be back again! read more

I cannot explain to you how good this place is, but I'll try. I just moved here a couple months ago from Virginia and though I'm from the Midwest originally, three years in the south has made me weak to these winters again. Cold Novembers mean solid ramen is a must and Yatagarasu did NOT disappoint. My brother and I had the Fried Calamari and Chicken Karaage (not pictured because we got too excited). The seasoning in the breading was impeccable and the sauce for the karaage had such a nice zest to it. The crunch was so solid that it tasted good even to the ears. We both got the chicken ramen as our main bowl. My brother asked for "some tofu" but our server, Bailey, heard "sub tofu" (my brother's mistake, not Bailey's). Bailey was quick to get the original helping of chicken for the ramen and was so sincere about the miscommunication even though it totally wasn't his fault! I opted to get a bunch of extras because I'm a man who needs spice, and the chili oil and paste did not disappoint. The broth mixed with the chili was unbelievable. I felt so warm you'd think it was summer. Excellent flavor in the veggies, noodles had the perfect chew, and the chicken was so tender. If it isn't obvious to you yet, this was the best ramen I've ever had. (My brother, though Yelp-less, also agrees.) We thought we were done, but the allure of strawberry mochi was too much to resist, so we caved. I didn't expect to enjoy such a cold treat in November but after all of the savory flavors in the ramen, the chilled sweetness was extremely refreshing. 15/10 mochi. Might even have to go back tomorrow for it. Bailey, if you're reading this, you're the man. Also, to all the kitchen staff at Yatagarasu, thank you. Seriously. This meal was a gift. read more
