Absolutely LOVE Yatagarasu. The ambience of the restaurant is authentic, calm, and traditional. The chairs and table setting are small, but it's never posed a problem. Service can lack at times, but this place is in high demand so it's no worry. Highly recommend the rich garlic tonkotsu ramen, pork & beef gyoza, takoyaki, & corn. First coming in the space is pretty cool. It is dark and dim lighted but still the atmosphere is good. The seating is a bit small but it affected me more so because I'm a bigger person. The service was good and I appreciate the waitresses walking me through the menu and answering my questions since it was my first time there. I decided to try the volcano ramen because it allegedly was the hottest thing on the menu. When I received the food the presentation was messy with spices just thrown all around the bowl. When I went to try it, the food wasn't spicy at all to me. I even tried the spice by itself and couldn't taste any heat, I believe it was just paprika and mild crushed pepper. The pork in the ramen was really sweet and didn't balance well with the rest of the food. The broth was thick mainly due to all the spices they added. Nothing really had flavor to stand alone nor mix well. I couldn't finish it not because it was too "hot" but because it was just not enjoyable to eat. The waitress recommended I try their garlic ramen next time which I'm not opposed to coming back. Let's get one thing straight: this is probably one of the better ramens within a decent drive from Purdue. However, paying $14 for a medium sized bowl of ramen is not necessarily my style, nor was the rich garlic tonkatsu anything mind-blowing. Big bowls of Yummy goodness finally settles into the Main St. flare. Visited my Alma mater to see friends and to my surprise discovered that a new ramen shop recently opened in downtown Lafayette. Thrilled about a new culinary experience in a place I called home for 5 years, my friends and I cheerfully strolled towards Main Street and the new ramen spot, Yatagarasu. First, the inside the restaurant was a great blend of modern Japanese & hipster culture. Sitting near the kitchen, my friends and I were continuously entertained by the hussle&bussle of the kitchen as gigantic bowls of ramen left its window. Simple and not pretentious, the 2-page menu provided enough variety from their small plate appetizers, yakitori options, and roughly 10 ramen options to give both ramen experts and newbies all they needed. The waiter was attentive and gave me helpful advice as I deliberated over my options. In the end, I went with their Miso Spicy Ramen (w/ an extra egg) as well as an order of yakitori and Gyzoa. First the apps. The yakitori was beautifully presented on a single small plate with a lemon slice and a dry spice sprinkled on the plate. However, it was more visually beautiful than it tasted as the yakitori was middle of the road, nothing bad but nothing great. The Gyzoa were far better and had perfectly crispy bottoms which were nicely complimented by their soft sides. Though they didn't taste like they were made in-house, tasting similar to the frozen gyzoa I buy at the grocery store, but nevertheless they were quite tasty and cooked well. The ramen was excellent, chewy with a bomb of umami, but it was those two perfectly poached, running tea eggs which absolutely stole the show for me. Each bite was a umami bomb of delight. A clustery-soy flavor that oozed creaminess and spoke of pure egg-ecstasy. For the price and experience, you really cant beat Yatagarasu. I highly, Highly recommend you visit them soon and often. The pork is tender and moist, and I just wish there was more of it. I love the inclusion of a soft boiled egg. It adds to the depth of flavor. The other stand-outs here are the small plates. We usually order 2-3 of them as appetizers. The star, for me, are the crispy Brussels sprouts. They're, as the name implies, crispy, with a nice sprinkling of salt and other seasoning. Prices are pretty decent here. Ramen runs around $13, but it's a generous serving. Service is good, and there have only been a couple occasions where the food seemed to take a while. Delicious ramen in Indiana! My fiancé and I stopped here on our way back from Chicago, and we were delighted by how wonderfully tasty our ramen was. My fiancé got the volcano spicy ramen, which is for insane people who love spice, while I got the spicy miso ramen. Our meal came out incredibly quick, like within 5-10 minutes. I was amazed by how pretty everything looked as each of our bowls had a plethora of toppings! My fiancé loved his volcano ramen and was dying by the end of it. His broth was thicker and was essentially coated in chili flakes so I recommend only getting the volcano ramen if you can REALLY handle spice. For me, the spicy miso ramen had just the right amount of spice and flavor, and all the toppings really complemented the ramen broth. The soft boiled egg was perfectly cooked and marinated. The highlight of the dish was the chashu! It was gingery and perfectly tender. I could've eaten a rice bowl with just the chashu (which they have as an option)! I just moved here a couple months ago from Virginia and though I'm from the Midwest originally, three years in the south has made me weak to these winters again. Cold Novembers mean solid ramen is a must and Yatagarasu did NOT disappoint. My brother and I had the Fried Calamari and Chicken Karaage (not pictured because we got too excited). The seasoning in the breading was impeccable and the sauce for the karaage had such a nice zest to it. The crunch was so solid that it tasted good even to the ears. We both got the chicken ramen as our main bowl. My brother asked for "some tofu" but our server, Bailey, heard "sub tofu" (my brother's mistake, not Bailey's). Bailey was quick to get the original helping of chicken for the ramen and was so sincere about the miscommunication even though it totally wasn't his fault! I opted to get a bunch of extras because I'm a man who needs spice, and the chili oil and paste did not disappoint. The broth mixed with the chili was unbelievable. I felt so warm you'd think it was summer. Excellent flavor in the veggies, noodles had the perfect chew, and the chicken was so tender. If it isn't obvious to you yet, this was the best ramen I've ever had. (My brother, though Yelp-less, also agrees.) We thought we were done, but the allure of strawberry mochi was too much to resist, so we caved. I didn't expect to enjoy such a cold treat in November but after all of the savory flavors in the ramen, the chilled sweetness was extremely refreshing. 15/10 mochi. Perhaps that makes the price premium (everything on the menu is about 15% higher than equivalent places in chicago etc.) worth it. These were the small servings of Ramen I have ever gotten anywhere but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Most places give you way too much. Their noodles are served barely cooked (al dente) which has its fans, but my wife's ramen was undercooked, still clumped and raw in parts, which is not optimal. (See pic) I was excited about Sapporo on tap, even for 7 bucks, but ours was sadly served in a freshly cleaned piping hot pint glass.
