Takoyaki
Skai B.

The takoyaki was crisp and the fillings take up a bit too much of the flavor on the outside. It is bitter and the sauce takes normal. Overall the takoyaki is not a must pick. The next item I ordered was the unagi don. The portion of rice to eel was WAYY too much, for the price I do not think this was worth it. The eel smothered in sauce really took away too much and the texture of the eel was good. The tomato on the side tasted good but I feel like it was more for a garnish. This resturant puts a lot into their presentation, but that took away the joy of tasting. The servers were nice however, much better than the food. The food was filling which is opposite s to what I expect from a sushi place. The decorations were amazing, the music not so much. Overall would come back here with friends if they were paying.

This place is wonderful. Kind staff that went out of their way to get us ambient water and alter a roll to fit our allergies, chic and intentional ambience that isn't too pretentious, and a slightly elevated menu from the other location in WL. Favorite restaurant in town, great value for the quality of food you get! Only downside is parking sucks.

Beautiful and smartly located right on the edge of campus inside the big new towers, us four guys found a gorgeous atmosphere with original handcrafted art pieces and decorative wall pieces hiding backlighting. This match the classy and smooth service we also had with the fine staff. There's a well curated mood here also at their home store a few miles north. Sadly the draft menu was not up yet, probably a good thing earlier in the day, we made good trying to takoyaki app, Black widow, Boston, and lobster rolls. The appetizer was fantastic though a bit doughy compared to others. Yatagarasu does this stuff better! The Boston and Black widow rolls, a bit bland, lacking the fresh zing of high quality sushi. The lobster roll helped make up somewhat, was fantastic, a curated blend of colors and textures tingling all the right notes. I have high expectations for Sakanaya considering fierce competition from Maru and many others. Kitami holds my hands with the best in the area, sublime variety and exquisite chef specials, will be interesting to see if Sakanaya can match with two locations now!

Spicy tonkotsu, nori removed (left)

Sakanaya is the downtown West Lafayette sister location to Sakanaya Izakaya on the north side. The great vibe and service are the same as the parent, and the tonkotsu is a welcome addition to the menu, giving this location its own flair. Portions are perfect, and even after eating it all, you don't feel weighted down on the walk back to the Purdue campus.

On my most recent visit, the restaurant was very busy, yet the service was surprisingly quick. The atmosphere is clean, modern, and upscale perfect for a dinner date or a special night out. While the sushi is priced a bit higher than some other spots in town, the quality of the ingredients, presentation, and service make it well worth it. You truly get what you pay for here.

Unfortunately, my most recent experience was not as positive, and I found myself disappointed--though not due to any major issues. When I arrived at 11 a.m., right as the restaurant opened, there seemed to be adequate staff and they certainly weren't too busy to pay attention to the two tables dining at the time. I have no issue with staff taking a moment to chat, but I wish they had focused a little more on the guests who were dining. We ordered green tea, which is served in a metal teapot. The protocol is that if one person orders it, they receive the teapot, and if two people order it, they get one teapot to share. However, what surprised me was that despite finishing our tea, no one came by to offer us a refill. It would have been nice for someone to ask if we wanted more, especially given that we had finished the first pot. I also ordered the vegetable udon, hoping for a flavorful dish filled with fresh vegetables. Sadly, when it arrived, it lacked any vegetables and was quite bland. The overall taste was underwhelming, which was disappointing, as I had expected better. I pushed the plate to the side, indicating that I wouldn't be eating it. No one noticed. My plate was hardly touched, and not once did any staff member, including what I presumed to be the manager based on his demeanor, come over to inquire about my meal. He passed by my table at least three times without asking if everything was okay. I would have appreciated the opportunity to provide feedback. While I must say that everything else I tasted, aside from the udon, was delicious, the lack of attention to detail--such as not offering a refill for my tea and not inquiring about my dining experience--left me feeling neglected. It was truly disappointing to leave with an untouched plate and not a single word from the staff addressing my concerns even after we declined the offer container to take home the meal.

The food was amazing! It's hard to choose from all the options but we managed. It was nice that the menu accommodated a few with dietary needs or preferences (aka, picky eaters, lol ). Some of our favorite dishes: - Takoyaki .... yum! - Gyoza - Crab Rangoon Rolls: - Sweetheart (tuna) roll was delicious and was the winner overall! - Fire tuna roll - Lava roll - Nigiri and sashimi We also ordered regular rolls like the Alaska roll and spicy yellow tuna. Not a single piece of sushi was left over and everyone was quite satisfied ! Definitely a place to go for anytime you want sushi, and especially if you're celebrating a special occasion. The restaurant looks very nice and clean and service is great. The menus are large but don't give an explanation of what things are (such as takoyaki = octopus ) but it was all delicious.

I understand that tipping is something everyone expects- but it isn't required if i didn't like the service or food experience. However it doesn't give our waiter the right to chase us down in the parking lot and demand a tip. Very uncomfortable knowing that this is what the establishment trains their employees to do. Not everyone is as nice as I am when they have people running towards them and their car! UNSAFE AND UNPROFESSIONAL

Seems…read morelike this place has sadly fallen off the area menu for sushi, this used to be the best value but now Fresh Thyme and Kroger offer better consistency, taste, and prices. I highly recommend Kitami and Maru first for Lafayette and campus raw fish rolls and sashimi. Kitami is especially divine with a massive menu offering some unique specialty items hard to find even in larger cities. Sorry Maje, you better get your act back together! I just felt like the flavors and depth of flavor were lacking, especially compared to sushi rolls I've had in California or at high end sushi places. Now I know that these types of restaurants aren't comparable to a sushi place at a college town but I was a bit disappointed. I didn't really dig the roll with cream cheese. So food was so-so. I guess this is decent for a college town though, since it is one of the only sushi places around and there isn't fresh fish nearby due to lack of nearby body of water. This review is based on my most recent experience based on what I ordered. It could be higher if I ordered other items. I do want to try to nigiri, but I know I can't compare it to the Michelin star nigiri I had in Chicago or fresh high end omakase in california, so I won't keep my expectations too high. I got takeout so can't speak about service or ambiance.
