Good food, good service, insanely expensive... We have family in Martinsville, VA and always stop by Yamato... The food has always been good, the service respectable, and prices fair/reasonable. This time around, the food and service were again good, but the prices were outrageously expensive - $220 for 7 people. I get it... JB has has run the U.S. economy into the ground like a 737-800, but businesses (namely restaurants) are price gouging the hell out of customers like it's going out of style. This is Martinsville not St. Louis; there's no way to justify a $220 bill at any restaurant in town - Pretty irritating when I see businesses take advantage of customers, hence the 3 stars. read more

This place is horrible. The food was awful, and I wish I had looked at their past health inspection reports before coming here. I ordered the steak and shrimp. The steak was extremely dry and tough--I could barely swallow it. The shrimp tasted old, like it had been sitting for days. To make matters worse, the customer service was just as bad as the food. Based on my experience, I would not recommend eating here. There are much better places to spend your money. read more

This used to be our go to place to eat. After Saturday night, we will not be back. The food was okay but the service was horrible. Waitress forgot my husband's soup, then his salad. Took our order with 2 other tables (we were not at a cooking table). The other 2 tables get their food. We wait over 30 minutes before she even comes to check on any of us. Saw that we didn't have our food and said she would check. Didn't see her for another 20 minutes, when she said she would check again. The other two tables got their checks and left before we ever saw food. We ordered first. Took another 10 minutes before we received our sauces. Not a single drink refill. It was the worst experience we've ever had. We will not go back. They have gone downhill. read more

manager is rude. Customer service is extremely horrible. Normally every Thursday my family and I go and have dinner here. Well on sept 3 (Thursday night) we decide to have dinner here, we sit at the grill. first problem: I asked my server if the bartender could make a special drink for me; most of the ingredients are listed on other drinks they have available. The server straight up replies with no, so I give her a look she proceed to say she would ask the bartender if they could make it. She also took our regular drink orders. I got a water, the person I was with got a sweet tea. She comes back with two waters the other person I'm with reply and said hey I got tea. she comes back with the tea but no straws. I ask for straws for the 2 of us... she returns To get our order. I order a krab roll deep fried with a side of noodles. (my sushi would be cooked at the sushi bar, mean while my noodles would be cooked on the grill)..... alright she brings back my sushi but still no straws so I than ask for 2 straws again... she never returns until a large group comes and want to join our grill table. She takes their drink order and come back with there drinks so I ask again can I have straws she being having an attitude. She comes back with the straws finally. now my sushi is out I have straws.... But the grill guy has been standing at the kitchen door just looking at us 2 and waiting. so as 30 to 45 mins passes the table is now full of people my sushi is cold (deep fried it for a reason right? Not to be cold and to be cooked) well I asked the server hey could you get the sushi guy to remake this, we've been waiting on the grill guy and he hasn't came out and now I'll have hot noodles but cold sushi. she stated he will not remake it so I replied you can ask him. she replies if he doesn't remake i dont know what to tell you I said well you'll take it off my tab cause I will not eat cold food. She stumps off and GOES TO THE BATHROOM WITH MY SUSHI, comes out and go to the kitchen with it, comes out the kitchen and tells me it cant be remade. So I say again you csn take it off my tab. After that she had a very nasty rude and evil attitude. she proceeded to come to the table and ask the large group was everything okay and did they need anything but didnt think to ask the person I was with if they was good or needed anything else. She comes back to treat the large group in whatever they needed. so I proceeded to say hey this person is here and is eating and still needs services so, can they get tea. Her reply was I didnt Leave them out I was seeing what the large group needed first, mind you we were already seated and there wayyy before the large group joined us. I'm making this because I come eveey Thursday and spend my hard working money for a place to act like this . This does no include people walking around in tank tops, wearing headphones, inappropriate language and etc etc. IF I COULD NOW LEAVE 0 stars they will be in the -0 read more

I ordered the volcano sushi roll and a few pieces of the tuna sashimi, roughly 2-ish hours later I felt my stomach flip and got very queasy. 2.5 - 3 hours later I was throwing up. My wife and I were spending the night in town while passing through. We tried Uamato and were pleased with our dinner. The staff was polite and our dinners were great. I had Hibachi Steak Dinner, my wife had the steak and shrimp combo. The meat was cooked as requested, and the shrimp and vegetables were cooked perfectly. We both enjoyed the meal. read more

The food was pretty good- typical hibachi. My husband and I were disappointed with the cleanliness of the restaurant. It was dirty, especially in the back and in the bathrooms. We don't plan on returning. read more

Yamato - Angel Roll - Japanese Near Me - Martinsville, Virginia

So, I ordered on sushi Thursday at 430p, when they reopen for dinner. I'm immunosuppressed, so I don't eat inside restaurants. So, I ordered online. My order was confirmed at 445p. I received my order at 550p. They had allowed all my hot food to sit for the entire time, claiming they were waiting on sushi. But meanwhile... The hot food got cold. The steak ended up rubbery, not to even start on the shrimp. Ever had cooked shrimp that you've allowed to go cold? My gyoza was so cold that they remade it for me. My soup was so cold that they gave me new. All in all... I didn't get to eat for two hours after the order. Also, my fiancée wouldn't even have his remade because who knows how long that would take? And here's the kicker, you can tell which sushi roll was made first, because they were allowed to get actually warm. So, now I have Luke warm food that was supposed to be hot and Luke warm food that was supposed to be cold and it's falling apart. Additionally, my spider roll, the shrimp inside, that was fried, wasn't even peeled. So it was inedible. I paid $60 for $5 gyoza and some soup. This is absolutely absurd. If you can't do take out right, don't do it. $60 just gone. Just sad. Really sad. Two hours of my life for a poor meal I paid a fortune for. read more

Only 1 star because I couldn't give 0. service left much to be desired. we had to request regular items like, straws, chopsticks, plates for appetizer. I found what appears to be some kind of paper product in my food. When this was brought to the attention of waitstaff, management responded by offering 10% off of entree and stating that they would not make it over since the plate was more than half gone before foreign object was discovered. Maybe it's better at the grill tables. Additionally, we waited an inordinate amount of time for the check. Thankful to Aden for getting our check as our waitress was inattentive. 0 Stars DO NOT RECOMMEND! read more

This place was terrible. We went on a Tuesday night at 5:00, sat until 5:40 when someone finally took our order. There were only 1 other person there at the table. We ordered alcohol drinks and had to go to the bartender to get them because they never were even made. It was poor service. The guy who waited on us wasn't even in a hurry, didn't once come back after they made our food, we had to get up and go to the front for our ticket. It was piss poor service and we will NOT be back. The food was decent, but not worth it. Also, it was disgusting, like they had never cleaned the place before. I'm surprised they aren't shut down by the health inspector because it was that bad. Do not go here. I'd give negative stars if I could. read more

Sometimes a chef will cover unagi with a lot of sauce if the eel is old. This was the case for the unagi that we ordered on my one trip here. I eat sushi on a regular basis and this was inedible. We are a long ways from the ocean and it is raw seafood. It happens. I get it. But this bad review is given because when I brought this to the attention of the staff and returned our entire three portions to them, they only gave us two dollars off the bill. I will not be returning. read more

Coming from St Augustine Fl am a bit spoiled on the goings on with the food scene, but pleasantly surprised here, did a take-out, as big rig was parked nearby. They had the food ready to go. The hibachi, soups, salad were all very good and staff accommodating. read more

Restaurant smells like a cheap vape pen. Interior is very dated and not cleaned regularly from the smell and feel of the place.

No hate at all but all you're paying for here is the show! While it is nice and the cooks are friendly it's over priced in my opinion. You can go under the lights to TokyoExpress for the same food/quality at a cheaper rate! I think this place is good if you've never seen it done once or twice but after that why pay for 60$ show? It's up to you- to each his own! read more

The rice was hard and crunchy and tasted like it had been cooked in old grease. The steak was cooked fresh but tasted old. The vegetables weren't cooked thoroughly and your feet stick to the greasy carpet when you walk in. The only reason for 1 star is because the employee's were very nice. read more

First word that comes to mind.. SCARY.. as in I'll probably get food poisoning later! Went to get hibachi with the fam and called ahead of time for a reservation. We showed up promptly. (still waited 10 min for a table) Walking in the restaurant we all looked at each other like "Oh shit, what have we gotten ourselves into?" Half of us wanted to leave before we were even seated. This place was very outdated, run down, and without a doubt un clean. First thing that caught my eye was the hanging drinking glasses above the bar. It had an inch thick of dust on the rack they were hanging on. After that observation I then decided I would order a bottled beer to be safe. We were seated at the hibachi table and it was caked with grease and food remnants. The couple across from us persisted to staff for it to be cleaned before cooked on. The dumpster out back would have been cleaner to cook on. The full table of three separate parties stated their concerns about the restaurant before drinks were even served. But for some reason we all stuck it out. Fast forward through the weird show the "chef" put on.. let's talk about CROSS CONTAMINATION! With everyone's order it consisted of a variety of proteins (shrimp, beef, chicken) the chef put all meats on the grill next to each other..touching one another. Yes. Raw chicken between the shrimp and beef. After putting the raw meat on the grill he used the same spatula to scoop the cooked rice and veggies on to everyone's plate. Oof! I ordered medium rare filet mignon & it was cooked well done. Honestly not even sure if it was a filet considering it came out to the table pre cut.. big no for me. Very hesitant to even eat any of the food after the whole experience, I only ate a couple bites. I promise I'm not self righteous! I went home and took a shot of whiskey to cleanse my gut of any bad bacteria LOL read more

Yamato is the pearl of the orient of the us south. The food and atmosphere is unbelievable. As an Asian brother of Asian descent I must say this was a delightful culinary experience. This restaurant gets more disappointing every time we go. The chairs have been needing to be replaced for over a year now and they are a law suit waiting to happen. The bathrooms always, without fail, smell like dirty mop water has been used to clean them. The bar tender is the most despicable thing about this place. I hope the owner reads this review and realizes how much money he could make by replacing his employee who calls himself a "bar tender". Not only are his hands filthy, but the way he and his buddy (who is at the bar every night) look at women coming into the restaurant, makes it very uncomfortable for the patrons. We have witnessed this lazy man let others go behind his bar to get their own drinks. NOT GOOD!! The food is good, but not priced according to the area, but because of the lack of choices in the area, they can get away charging what they like. read more

I was in town from DC visiting my family and we went here to celebrate my sister in laws birthday. The wait was only 5 min and we were taken right back to our table on a Saturday night. First came the soup, I'm used to eating at these kind of places so I got 2 soups instead of salad because most other places put a peanut dressing on the salad but not here you get your choice of dressing. The soup was good, a little salty but good. I ordered the chicken and shrimp both of which were great at tastes and quality. I think the prices here are a good deal. My plate cost about $15 and in DC it's $30 for the same plate and I actually like the flavor here better. I will be going back when in town. read more

I only gave is rate of one star because I had to give something. This restaurant is disgusting the floor, food, and bathroom. My appetizer arrived with a hair in it and when the chef arrived he reached down to straighten out a filthy rug on the floor under him and was then going to cook immediately. I was already uneasy after sitting there so I paid for my drink and left I could not consume food in such a unsanitary environment I think they need a visit from the food and health dept. read more

I've had positive experiences here, which is why I returned on my most recent visit. However, this time was different. This was my first time dining as a vegan, so I ordered two relatively simple vegetable rolls: the avocado and sweet potato/yam tempura roll, thinking it should be same as any other sushi restaurant. I was wrong because they weren't very yummy. My friends enjoyed their hibachi lunches, but I was sad to see the vegetables cooked in butter, so definitely ask for no butter if you're vegan and ordering the vegetable hibachi. With Chopstix possibly providing better sushi in town, I see no real reason to return. read more
