We really enjoyed our experience at Yamafuji! First off - don't let the exterior appearance sway you to think twice - because we almost did. The outside needs help and these reviews helped convince us to give it a chance so let this one be another one of those! We were seated far from others in the restaurant which was great to avoid conversations that overlap. The music was at a nice level so you didn't need to yell to talk to people at your table. This is thoughtful of the restaurant staff and I appreciate it! I think our waiters name was Scott. He was a tall, calm soft spoken man who made us feel welcomed and relaxed. Many times at a restaurant it's a quick order and eat experience. Scott, if that's his name, was anything but that. He helped work through the long sushi roll list with us and overall just did a fantastic job. Now for the food - overall amazinggg. The pork gyoza was crispy and huge! My miso soup wasn't what I expected so I wouldn't get that again. But the sushi rolls themselves were great. A little smaller than we are used to back home but still filling. My absolutely favorite was the crunchy California roll (minus the eel sauce). I mean - writing this review and seeing the picture of the roll is making my mouth water it was that good. 10/10 recommend their sush, dining in and enjoying the company you visit with! read more

Didn't know this place was here in good ole Fromt Royal. Clean place, music at a good level for conversation. Our server was alone today so she didnt come to check on us while we were eating... this is only a bummer because I ordered the spicy Korean Ramen and oh boy was this spicy. The Ramen was sooo good. My husband ordered the white tuna roll and spicy tuna tempura roll. He loved every bite. The only real downer was the lack of ability to request water and the salad that came with the ramen which was pedestrian. We still plan to come back and try some other items. read more

We were quickly seated , quiet music played in the back ground, tables are spaced nicely apart so you do not feel crowded and it is not loud even though almost every table was filled. The waitstaff were friendly and attentive with a good knowledge of the menu and specials. What we ordered Sushi- Spicy lady roll (SLR) Sour plum roll Spicy tuna roll Appetizers- shumai broccoli yaki Main course - Bulgogidon Beef yakisoba First the Spicy Lady Roll is an amazing flavorful creamy roll that I will be ordering on every visit. The other two were good and we look forward to trying the many different rolls on the menu. The Shumai was shrimp and crab dumplings, good flavor and texture. The Yaki was good, be sure to get the sauce at the bottom of the bowl. The main courses could have served 4 instead of two, very good size portions. The Bugogidon was full of flavor and varied textures, the meat tender and cooked just right. The Beef Yakisoba - unfortunately not what I had expected. I really look for a certain flavor in a pan fried noodle and these tasted like they were simply boiled and quickly tossed. (I was fortunate to spend some time in Yokosuka and Sasebo Japan where beef yaki soba was my go to) and the beef was a little tough. I brought it home and added a few things to make it to my liking. Overall it is an enjoyable, comfortable, and affordable place to visit. Definitely recommended. read more

Passing through here on my way back from Shenandoah mountains. Never been to Front Royal despite forever seeing its name on highway signs. I was the only one there around 530/6p on a Wednesday night. Big place with nice tables and decor. I suppose a lot of people were getting takeout. One funny waitress who could model. Delicious food! The server was nice, but the food was just average. Wasn't expecting much since it is the only Japanese restaurant around that sells sushi and the sushi was exactly what I expected.. I don't recommend ordering sushi if you're used to eating high quality sushi from big cities. We also got some hot appetizers and they were surprisingly way better than the sushi. Quick Tip: Stick with sushi and do takeout/delivery. Sushi is their strength. Tonight I sampled several nigiri, the soft shell crab hand roll, and two flavors of mochi ice cream. The fatty tuna was fantastic and stood out from the rest. Inari is an old favorite that Yamafuji does well, and the bluefin tuna's texture was juuuuuust right. Thought the blue crab was dull; not what I expected. And the surf clam was new for me - a thick, chewy delight. Handroll was good but probably tastes better when dining in (as all fried items do), and the ice cream was meh (neither mango nor red bean tastes like mango or red bean). All in all, this is my go-to for sushi but nothing more - and that's a-okay with me! read more

Smokey flavor and yum yum sauce. Yamafuji was a delight. We eat a lot of asian and oriental cuisine as my wife prefers sushi almost every meal and I choose the fried rice options every time. This one stood out to me. As many places in the DC area seem to offer variants in their fried rice such as green bean or corn, this adds very small amounts of broccoli. The part that stands out is the SMOKEY flavor the meal offers which make the taste buds dance with joy. It was delicious it almost made me sad. (weird emotions I know) But the meal was able to bring so much feeling. I believe it was the pepper added to it which the others don't do which helped. This time I chose chicken over my usual shrimp and it was a great choice. The chicken was very tender and soft. They provided plenty of yum yum sauce. The inside is nice and the waitstaff is very friendly but the food leaves a lot to be desired. We ordered the O-Toro and salmon nigiri, the rice was underseasoned and had an odd texture. The o-toro was definitely not tuna belly and was chewy. The shrimp tempura roll that we ordered was missing half the components. How do you forget the sauce on a roll? The menu is superb. Far more interesting sushi menu than most places, the breadth is remarkable and reflects this is run by Japanese who know what they're doing. Noodle dishes and a broad selection of traditional Japanese dishes as well. Nice people, service was very good, though we walked in at around 3:30. The place is a bit worn. You go here to eat well, not impress a date. We had a few apps from the sushi menu, a couple of rolls and about a dozen nigiri. The quality of the fish was superb. Sushi rice was a bit on the dry side and not as flavored as we make or are used to. Still excellent, just another variation. Priced very right, at least from what we're used to. In general, this place looks pretty run down, but don't let that fool you. The food is really good, with the really amazingly fresh sushi and fish, to the soft and creamy mochi. I am conflicted about last nights dinner, we brought my brother-in-law for his second sushi experience, his grand-nephew wanted to stay with us rather than go home with Momma, so a bit of circus was to be expected. Danny and I left the toddler sleeping with my wife and ordered some starters: 3 water, 2 green tea, 1hot sake, gyoza and 2 seaweed salads..... Well, nothing happened! The parking lot was packed, place humming, baby sleeping, bliss, but NO service, go figure........ Our 95 lbs waitress was SOLO! (WELL, it wasn't like this this A.M.) One old and skilled Korean sushi master and and a cook (?) In the back were the whole staff, geepers! Sorry, got interupted, lost your order, restart. By this time I am needing a beer but not willing to pay $4 for a brew I can see through, about the time the deep fried beef gyoza show up so does the toddler and grandma, no water, out of miso soup (!!!) Getting dry here....... I will rest here, food was quite good but sashimi and nigiri on the skimpy side, on the positive no cucumber julienne under the seaweed salad. Sigh! Left a big tip. read more
