An amazing atmosphere of deep knowledge, reverence and formality, with fun, laughter, and an emphasis on safety and really understanding the use of the techniques. After about 11 months at this dojo (and some previous experience with a handful of martial arts), I can really recommend this for young adults, and families with small children who want the richness of an old, well-established art form, lots of variety, and a small, family-like atmosphere that can easily shift between playfulness and extreme seriousness. Ninjutsu has aspects now found in many different arts that folks may be familiar with (wrist locks, throws, kata, weapons, etc.). The art is practical but also beautiful. It is defensive, not offensive. The emphasis is on correct technique that does not rely on strength. My 7-year-old son can now drop me with some techniques. There is a lot of care in the introduction and progression of teaching. Safety, safety, safety.
This is a place for people who like to go deep and dork out with the things they are into. There are people who come here who actually use martial arts for a living...in their jobs. For kids who can focus their attention (or want help in doing so) and parents who want to learn along with their kids, this is a great place if you like to get serious with your pursuits but also want support in going at your own pace without any pressure. There is reverence for tradition here, and there are math jokes. There is profound respect among participants, and there are terrible puns that get thrown like shuriken. If you're the kind of person to go deep into youtube videos to nerd out on how to do something with extreme skill or the best materials and techniques, this is your place. Leave your ego at the door. Come just as you are. Also, there is a roughly even mix of genders. A fantastically low teacher/student ratio. There is support and respect for individual differences and capacities. read more
