Horrendous sushi here. A lot of the "crunchy" salmon or "crunchy" tuna were not actually crunchy. There were some rolls that were sooo mushy it was hard to finish. The apps were decent but pricey for small portions. It was completely dead when we came in on a Sunday at around 4-5pm. Service was okay, only 1 receptionist and 1 waitress. Then again, no one there they needed to serve but us. They did seem to get lots of take out. The actual venue was outdated and decor was poor. Bright orange walls opposing red walls. I used to go here years ago when it was called Haru! I'm back today for dinner with friends and it's still as delicious. The staff is always kind and the food comes quick. Generally a low price point for sushi and sit down meals. It always has multiple parties in and they also do take-out. Found this sushi place on Yelp when we were craving something new and different than our usual go-to sushi takeout. Don't blink or you may pass right by Haru which is quite hidden within the Acme plaza. Their service was excellent and we had the pleasure of freshening up with a warm wash cloth while we browsed their huge menu. After taking what felt like ages to decide (my fault) we ordered the avocado salad, miso soup, and dumpling soup for starters. All 3 were great but especially the dumpling soup which was a great spin off the usual wonton soup. Dumplings were very fresh and broth was flavored with onions and scallions. For our main sushi course I ordered the deluxe roll (spicy crab, cucumber, and avocado topped with spicy tuna), and my husband ordered the red dragon roll (crunchy spicy tuna with avocado on top) and the crab naruto roll. My daughter ordered her usual cucumber avocado roll (but actually sampled ours for the first time). Everything we ordered was very fresh and flavorful! There were so many items on the menu but I'm glad we chose these three for our first time. We also had the tempura green tea ice cream for dessert which was a huge hit with our daughter. I really enjoyed this place. Stopped in for lunch, and it ended up being a whole dining experience. The tuna tartar was very good though not all all like traditional tuna tartar. It was almost like a raw tuna cake, but very delicious. A bunch of lunch specials. Bento box was great. Soup was delicious. It looked very clean. We were one of 3 tables for lunch. I am leaving four stars once again, but wanted to update my review. The Yakiudon noodles, this time shrimp, were as good as last time. Done to perfection, soaked in a delightful sauce. Portion size still below average, but so was the price. But it did take a long time to come out. We had kani salad--which was equally as good, and my daughter ordered sushi for her meal. The noodles came with soup and a salad. Everything came out at once except for the yakiudon. We also had to request the kikkoman for the sushi as there was none on the table and none on the sushi plate. We finished all the delivered items before the noodles even came out. And we continued to wait a considerable time before their arrival. The restaurant was not crowded enough to warrant this type of delay. Should this occur again, I would have to drop my rating to a three. The food is really, really good here and the price is really, really good. But a mistake in delivery is enough to slightly offset the good. read more

My name is RumGirl and I am a sushi addict. I have been for several years and after meeting my new dealer this evening, I am afraid it is going to get much much worse. Sushi is hard to come by in this area. Let me rephrase that. Good sushi is hard to come by in this area. In most cases the end result is that you get what you pay for. Good fresh sushi = big bucks. Cheap sushi = a date with Pepto bismol on the bathroom floor for the next few days. You can't mess with raw fish. Three pages of special sushi rolls. Just the special ones and you know I am all about being special. THREE FREAKING PAGES!!!! Crazy roll, red dragon roll, incredible roll, spicy girl roll, Eagle roll, roll around on the floor and drool roll. I can't tell you what was in what but the fat roll above my belt was happy happy! These guys get BIG POINTS for variety. Best ever. Let me tell you that we broke a sweat trying to decide. I mean, this was tough work. Stacey whips out her own copy of the extensive menu. My husband has to take notes to help him remember his order. I want to try it all!!!! I want. I need. Sniff. Sniff. Itch. Scratch. Cough. And I need it NOW!!! ALL the special rolls and I mean all 3 pages of special rolls are 50% off. I wanted to kiss these people. Really! Most specialty rolls cost you 12 to 15 bucks on average. These babies were $7!!!! As my husband says "It's like a dead baby seal, ya can't beat it." Now that PETA is on my butt after that comment, I'll be quick. Haru sushi was delicious. Every roll was beautiful, fresh, and different. I have never tasted anything like this stuff! The crazy roll was filled with lobster salad rolled in mango and rice with a creamy honey sauce on top. Have you ever heard of anything so magical? It was! I'm still tingling form the experience. You would have thought the Red Hot Chili Peppers sat on my lap and sang happy birthday to me naked. Yeah, that good. Memorable. That's what I want when I go out to eat. I do not just want a meal. I can do that in my own kicthen. I need an experience and a taste that will linger on in my memory and on my facebook page for years to come. We all love good food with good friends but you never forget those special moments you share with your friends. I came in here for a quick lunch and left full and happy. It was mid week at lunch so it was very quiet, which was just what I needed. The decor was simple and similar to most Japanese restaurants. Prices were very reasonable. There is a huge sushi menu plus a great selection of other offerings. I settled on a lunch bento box. It came with miso soup, salad, tea and the box (veggie tempura, rice, California rolls with dipping sauces). It was really too much to eat and i couldn't finish. But it was tasty and fresh. The tea was warm and soothing. The waitresses were very nice. An old lady came in, sat in the back and was chatting with the chef (there's an open kitchen) in Japanese. Haru Japan's pleasant service, great food, and ambient atmosphere gave me a wonderful dining experience. I would have give this place 5 stars but I feel that ordering takeout didn't quite cut it for me. The sushi rolls were freshly made and tasted amazing but when I ordered the sushi rolls for take-out the taste was really different than eating in. When ordering sushi for takeout at Haru Japan, the sushi are placed into a foil takeout box which I feel is not a good idea for the freshly made sushi because the foil absorbs the heat from sushi taking away from the cohesiveness of the rice, thus, the rice will easily fall apart. The sushi rolls here are amazing as long as you eat in. Besides sushi, I had other food and appetizers such as their Gyoza, Tonkatsu Meal, and Sukiyaki. I must say, Haru Japan's Gyoza is the best in South Jersey. It takes a lot of skills to make Gyoza because it requires perfect timing to take them off the pan. Crispy on the outside warm and chewy on the inside. The Tonkatsu was really good too, it wasn't too flaky and the meat was tender. As for the sukiyaki, it had a great-tasting broth in a bowl of tender and succulent thinly sliced beef. Overall, I would recommend dining in at Haru Japan. You will not be disappointed with their helpful staff, delicious food, and ambient atmosphere. Update: Went from 4 stars to 5. Haru no longer have those foil containers and I am happy that they listened to their customers. Will eat here again and again. read more

The tuna a frozen, the salmon was like the salmon you buy from the frozen seafood area meaning it wasn't fresh, and the miso soup was made from water and powder. My wife and I have been ordering take out from here since they first opened a few years ago. We finally decided to have lunch here recently (March, 2013). What a lovely experience we had, minus one pet peeve, the music being played. I will get the one negative experience out now. Fairly loud rap and urban dance music just did not jive well with the overall experience unfortunately. Traditional Japanese music would suffice, and truly add to the already pleasant aesthetics involved. With that being said on to the review. The staff are attentive and very pleasant. They made you feel at home, truly I mean this. The prices were most reasonable for the boxed lunch specials, barely $20.00 for my wife and I, which included soup, a salad, hot green tea, rice, fried veggies, sushi, and chicken/beef teriyaki. A very clean restaurant, quaint, with traditional Japanese art, sushi bar in rear, et al. Very pleasant. Comfortable atmosphere, minus said music overhead. We are most definitely dinning at their location, again and again. Food was absolutely tasty and fresh, we devoured it. We order from Haru at least once a week and eat in a few times a month. I am not a sushi eater but my husband is and loves the sushi here. Lots of choices and always fresh. I really love their chicken fried rice and hibachi chicken. They have a decent kids menu also, which includes chicken and French fries which is always good for the toddlers. The waitresses are great and very attentive. They know us by name and are great with the kids. They provide our sometimes odd requests with no problem. And it love the pineapple that comes with the check ;) I wish the restaurant was bigger inside, but i guess that's hard to come by in a strip mall. Overall great!! read more

I had a serious craving for sushi and looked around for a place to order from. We ordered a sushi pizza, kani salad, Red Dragon Roll, Valentine Roll, and Sweetheart Roll. The sushi pizza had great flavor to it and the crust itself was amazing, however, the spicy tuna was definitely mixed with yams, which made the whole dish not great. If it had been real spicy tuna, the sushi pizza would have been amazing! There was too much yams mixed in with the spicy tuna in the sushi rolls too and it was disgusting. The texture was grainy and warm and gross. The kani salad was okay but JUST okay and was only made better when I mixed in some of my own homemade spicy mayo. They did give me a California Roll for free, which was nice and very appreciated. It was sad that that was the best roll of our meal though. I understand that restaurants may be experiencing tough times because of COVID but past reviews show that this place has been doing the yam thing since well before COVID. It was truly a disappointing meal; I have never had sushi this bad. It's a shame because if they had used legit spicy tuna, the meal would have tasted fantastic overall. I had to leave another review for Yama Japan. In the last few years I noticed the quality of the hand-full of Japanese/Chinese restaurants that I frequent start to go down. Two days ago I stopped at Yama Japan and had a great meal. The quality and service still is better than most in the area. I tried a new (to me) amazing appetizer, crispy salmon skin salad. My son and I loved it. The flavors were spot on between the grilled smoky flavor along with the sweet and slightly spicy flavor we were wowed. Went to this place recently for the first time and was very pleased at the amount of vegan sushi options and how knowledgable the staff were! They even confirmed that their eel sauce was vegan and didn't have bonito flake. In addition, they were more than happy to sans the mayo sauces to make some of the vegetable rolls vegan.
