When a winter cold nixed my Friday cinq a sept plans with my wife, we opted for some takeout instead, since we were already in the mindset of not cooking dinner. This fortuitously lined up with a DoorDash discount, and I went to my ever-reliable list of Places to Eat At, and Xaymaca caught my eye as a restaurant with a style of food that's pretty takeout-friendly.
We stuck to a handful of our Caribbean-food favourites - fried plantains and beef patties for apps, the jerk chicken plate for my wife, and the oxtail and goat curry plate for me.
They had a short wait for a Friday evening, and we soon had our food in hand.
Xaymaca seems to be lacking small containers for takeout, as both the plantains and beef patties came in small paper bags, which was unfortunate as one of my patties got broken in the process.
It didn't affect the flavour though, and the flaky pastry, and savoury and lightly spicy meat hit the spot. They were generously-filled as well, unlike the frozen ones you can buy.
The plantains were much less impressive as despite being priced the same as a beef patty, a mere four slices of plantains came to the order. I also prefer a sauced plantain, but those would have fared even worse in their baggy.
The mains brought things back around. My wife enjoyed the tender, deeply flavourful jerk chicken. It packed some heat, but not a crazy amount, even for my less-spice-tolerant significant other. Rice and peas, and a slaw of cabbage, carrot and peppers completed the hefty meal.
Since I first had it in Ottawa, I've been a fan of Caribbean ox tail dishes. The gravy is so rich and hearty, and the tender bits of meat and fat easily fall off the oddly-shaped tail bones. Xaymaca's was great, savoury delight, true to the dish's form.
You don't always see goat curries at Caribbean places in Canada, so when I saw it as an option with the ox tail, it was an easy "yes"! The tender slices of sautéed goat ribs and other cuts were tender and not at all gamey, with a great curry flavour. Both this and the ox tail had a pleasant punch of heat, but again, nothing crazy.
The rice and peas soaked up lots of saucy goodness, and the crisp slaw added tartness and crunch.
A second delivery order saw us getting two different chicken dishes, the jerk and curry, as well as beef patties and plantains again.
The plantains again arrived inexplicably in a paper bag that was on its last legs, but the portion size was much more reasonable this time around.
The patties' structural integrity fared better this time, and the pastry and flavour of the filling were excellent again.
Also in the category of "consistently good", the jerk chicken was tender and its deep, rich flavour highlighted why this is one of Jamaica's most well-known dishes.
The curry chicken had a good curry flavour, and the sautéed chicken and creamy sauce mixed in with the rice and beans for a stick-to-your-ribs type of hearty comfort food.
Odd packaging choices aside, Xaymaca is firing on all cylinders with great flavours and well-executed dishes that showcase their homeland's food. read more
