I work and workout at Google in Mountain View, and this Chico State WREC Center is giving Google's gym a run for its money. Just the sheer variety of equipment, the quality, the volume, everything is impressive. My ONLY gripe would be that they could use more basketball courts. They tend to block off a full court for 3 badminton nets............. what the heck wrec? read more

I've been coming here for the past semester and its literally amazing. Super clean, large, and well kept. Tons of machines so you never have to wait, and the building itself is LEED certified gold. The elliptical machines help to generate electricity for the building! How sick is that? Talk about sustainability... read more

Fantastic, great variety of equipment, staff is friendly and the group classes are fantastic. I regularly attend Pilates and Kickboxing and love using the great variety of free-weights. Only downside is the lifting area of the gym is always full of super built men, which can make it intimidating if you're not a super built man. Still, I'm tempted to go to Grad school just so I can continue to have such a nice gym accessible to me. read more

If you are a Chico State student and want to use a gym, you are super lucky. I LOVE this place. They have tons of equipment, lots of classes, great customer service, and it's clean, and it's included in tuition so you never pay unless you want something extra--like a massage, which they also have. I have been going to the WREC for about a year and have never had one problem. Never even had to wait for a machine because there are so many. It's a wonderful place. read more

I am soon graduating with my BS so figured it was time to give my opinion on this facility after 4 years of use. As a background to myself, I am not the usual frat boy WREC gym go-er who drinks on weekends and buys bodybuilding.com and gymshark tank tops. I have been nationally qualified by the NPC and have been bodybuilding for going on 8 years of my life, and competitively for about 5 years. I have gone from roughly 170lb freshman year to currently 210lb my senior year. My review will be based on a strict bodybuilding point of view, not an average college student point of view. In terms of a gym for a bodybuilder, only 3 things really matter for me, cleanliness, size of the crowd, and variety of equipment: As far as cleanliness goes, 5/5. You will not find a cleaner gym around, absolutely blows Gold's Gym and 24H Fitness out of the water in this regard. Constant maintenance and upkeep, broken machines also get fixed within days to a week, pretty good. In terms of this area of space compared to the crowd, it gets pretty packed at peak times unfortunately. I would steer clear of coming to the WREC Mon-Wed 12PM-8PM. Too many people and the weight room downstairs is just not large enough. (During normal semester hours) Where the WREC *REALLY* falls short is variety of equipment. Unfortunately, although I'm sure cost effective, the WREC has decided to purchase all of it's equipment from 1 manufacturer, PRECOR. PRECOR is not really a top quality manufacturer in my opinion, ESPECIALLY when it comes to plate loaded machines, where the WREC is DESPERATELY lacking in. The WRECs PRECOR plate loaded back row and lat pull down machines are just plain awful, and do not compare at all to Hammer Strength. If you are at all serious about bodybuilding, you will find yourself hating doing back days at the WREC, as there is hardly any machine equipment available for this large muscle group. If there was one thing I would recommend to AS/WREC to put on the top of their priority list, is please investing in Hammer Strength plate loaded machines for both chest and back. I also personally hate PRECORs rubber grips that they use for practically every handle. They slip, tear, and are just a very cheap option, would have much rather just preferred metal crosshatch pattern over these cheap rubber grips any day of the week. Other than my main gripe about not having proper plate loaded machines, the WREC generally has most of what you need. As a side note, would also have liked to see dumbbells up to 150lb, not just 125. My conclusion about the WREC: The WREC is a 5/5 10/10 gym for an average college student. There is a pool, basketball courts, indoor running track, ping pong tables, hot tub, and enough cardio and weight equipment to easily last you through your college career. Unfortunately if you are an elite bodybuilder, it is pretty easy to see through the cracks and you will immediately notice after a few weeks of use that the WREC is missing very key machines that are vital to any semi serious bodybuilder. My personal recommendation, get an additional gym membership somewhere in Chico that has the missing equipment that the WREC does not give. From a bodybuilding pov, I give the WREC 3/5. read more

This is the nicest gym I have ever been to. Tons of cardio and strength training equipment that range from machines, free weights, Olympic platforms and kettle bells. The group exercise classes include Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, dance and TRX. read more

Update to my previous review - my access will be revoked because I recently graduated with my MA, but I have been a member since the day it opened. The gym itself is still great - excellent equipment, etc...but the staff quality has gone down hill. The majority of the front desk staff just get paid to stand around and gossip. Some of the "floor" staff spend their time in corners on their cell phones texting away, or chatting it up with patrons. Only in a collegiate working environment do you get away with something like that. I also question many of their highly paid career staffers - there seems to be at least four of them, if not more, and I just wish the Associated Students was more upfront about how much these people are paid and what their purpose is. The gym is ALWAYS cold - I would guess the AC is at a constant 70 or so degrees, which isn't bad but its freezing - the locker rooms are even colder. From day one, the water temps were always freezing in the showers - it wasn't until six months ago that this was fixed. The overall cleanliness has gone down hill, too. There will be days when you find smears of people's sweats and hand prints on mirrors and they will stay on there for about three or four days before being cleaned out. The hand sanitize dispensers are often empty and when you tell the staff at the front desk about it, they just go, "Yeah thanks for telling me," but then turn back to gossip with their friends. If you're a student, its a no-brainer - use the WREC. I just hope in 5 years time the quality doesn't deteriorate further. read more

I love the wrec. It was built only a few years ago and is very modern and clean. Lots of space and machines. It's exclusively for students, professors and alumni. It's close to campus and their hours are pretty good when it comes to accommodating off peak hours. read more

I love this gym. So many machines, so many things to do! You can't get bored with a gym like this.
