We were also guided to an osprey nest in the middle of the bay, on one of the channel markers, where the osprey family were raising their two babies. We were lucky it was a beautiful day, weather-wise, but they also have a canopy over the pontoon boat, which keeps out both hot sun and rain. It's really the best dolphin boat tour around!

Wow! What an experience! We took a 9am tour to Shell Key on Cap'n Dalton's boat. There were only…read moresix passengers on board, which meant there was plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the sunshine. Dalton provided expert commentary about the area, even pointing out a few celebrity homes and yachts along the way. It was a gorgeous ride over to Shell Key, and we even saw a few dolphins along the way. Once on the island, we had about 45-50 minutes to explore the beaches and do a little snorkeling and shell-hunting. The island is aptly named, with rows and piles of shells along its white, sandy beaches. The water was warm and perfect for swimming. Soon enough we were back on board and heading back to the harbor. And that's when the magic happened: dolphins! Following along in our wake, and no doubt attracted to the enthusiastic squeals of one of our dolphin-loving fellow passengers, the dolphins put on quite a show. Even Dalton, who I assume sees a LOT of dolphins, was impressed by how long they followed in our wake and performed jumps and flips for us. It was truly one of the most remarkable experiences of my life! Thank you Dalton and Island Ferry for an amazing and memorable tour and one of the true highlights of our vacation!

Along with finding some amazing shells we caught a nice, yet somewhat cloudy, sunset...got some great pictures regardless. The waters were calm as could be and I have to say here, listen to your Captains when advise you to bring some coats...it gets chilly out there on the water when that sun goes down! They supplied some very warm blankets for their passengers as well. Now, on to the main event... The light show from the vantage point that they are able to get you is amazing! You cannot get these views from anywhere else! They take the time to ensure that everyone on the boat has the chance to get some fantastic views and pictures...it's touches like that that makes Coastal Cruises so good at what they do. Beer can island is awesome! It's one of the primary reasons why we moved to Apollo Beach. The…read moreisland is 1.5 miles off of my boat dock and our kids love going there and hunting starfish and shells. It's more fun on the weekends but also more crowd. Dozens and dozens of boats will beach and anchor there put up tents and umbrellas and barbecue and just basically hang out. Rumor is beer can Island is privately owned and the person who owns it doesn't care if you party there. We have actually camped out there with campfire several times overnight. Labor Day, Fourth of July, Father's Day, and other weekends holidays are very popular. If you want to get a spot for your boat on one of these holidays I suggest showing up very early like eight or 9 AM. On the south east side of the island is a small cove with Deepwater where we pull up on our 32 foot express. We can basically beach the boat in that spot and still have plenty of water for the engines. When you're waiting around on the sandbar be sure to do the "stingray shuffle". Scoot your feet as you walk it's cooler to stingray to get out of your way so he won't step on them.
