It reads, "Early County, an original county, was created by Act of December 15, 1818, from Creek Cession of August 9, 1814. At first, it contained Decatur, Seminole, Baker, Mitchell, Calhoun, Miller, Dougherty and parts of Clay, Grady, and Thomas Counties. It was named for Peter Early (1773-1817), judge, state senator, Governor, Congressman. First County Officers, commissioned May 18, 1820, were: Thomas Taylor, Clerk Superior Court; Otheniel Weaver, Clerk Inferior Court; Charles Thigpen, Sur.; Mark Cole, Cor.; John Dill, Tax Rec.; Jefferson Nichols, Tax Collector. John Brockman became Sheriff in July 1820." Peter Early was the 28th Governor of Georgia. The county is bordered on the west by the Chattahoochee River, which forms the border with Alabama. The area was developed by European-American settlers and their African-American enslaved workers for cotton plantations. Agriculture was critical to the economy into the 20th century. The Cohelee Creek Bridge in the county is the southernmost covered bridge still standing. Still, it recalls a part of post-Civil War history. It reads, "Hilton School. Formal education began in 1897 on land from J.C. Hudspeth and Mrs. Elizabeth Freeman. A petition in 1924 halted a new school at Waters Ford. In 1925 a spacious masonary school opened one mile west of this marker for students from Freeman, Hilton, Rock Hill and Sowhatchee. The name was changed to Hilton Consolidated School. In 1932 students came in from Byrons Academy, Centerville and Lucile. Vocational classrooms, canning plant, lunchroom and gymnasium enhanced the complex before the high school closed in 1955. An elementary school continued until 1960. Yes, the bridge is locked off from all foot traffic by iron gates. I'm guessing that this was done to prevent the neer-do-wells from filling the interior with graffiti, something I've seen done to other covered bridges. There is access to the bridge from both sides of the creek, but the far side has better parking and even a few picnic benches. The view from there is way better too.
