That said, it is a monument to soldiers who died fighting for the Confederacy during the Civil War. It reads, "A tribute of love, to the noble Confederate soldiers who cheerfully offered their lives in defense of the right of local self-government, and to those who fought and survived. Yes, the bridge is locked off from all foot traffic by iron gates. I'm guessing that this was done to prevent the neer-do-wells from filling the interior with graffiti, something I've seen done to other covered bridges. There is access to the bridge from both sides of the creek, but the far side has better parking and even a few picnic benches. The view from there is way better too.
