    Road sign

We headed to Olympic National Park, on the way there, a planned detour to see the World's Largest Spruce Tree was on our list. Mapped it out and got to the area pretty easily. There's not much of a marker so I actually drove passed it and had to U-turn it around and head back, that's when we saw the sign. We parked across the street from the trailhead and the walk is like 5 mins, walk on the trail until you see the bridge and there it is! It's pretty spectacular to see such a large tree, geez...the girth on this one!! Came at a good time, not too many people there in the mid-morning, got our photos and spent about 30 or so mins there. Hit the Honey-Bucket before we hit the road again, so there are lovely accommodations there. Great detour to check out, worth it in my book!

    Stumps along the trail.

Great place for all ages. Muddy but glad we visited with old tennis shoes. Little to no incline. Store across the street has post cards and memorabilia. Cool looking bridge and even seen some ducks. Clean location. Sign located on side of street the trail starts. We went on a sunny day and was stunning.

We flew into Seattle and flew back from San Fran Ca drove down the coast and some side trips inland. We didn't do as much research for the trip .. we saw more and did more during this trip. It was full of what i call HAPPY ACCIDENTS .. finding this huge tree was one of those accidents. It's so big pictures can't do it justice .. we were lucky to be at a time when we had it to ourselves and it was peaceful. We took some pics with us in it to give domination ... as you couldn't tell by the pics how huge this is until you see how tiny we look.

Must see right outside Forks! Quite the sight. Truly a magnificent tree within the park. The trail to the tree is not that arduous or long and takes about 12 minutes.

Short hike to a spectacular Sitka spruce. At 1000 years old the tree has tremendous character. The burls were massive as would be expected when the circumference of this tree is over 50 feet. If you have 20 minutes and need to stretch your legs this is a nice stop.

Fun little detour heading out from Kalaloch! Follow the sign off 101 and head down the road a little less than 4 miles until you see a small brown sign to the left. Park directly in the lot across from the sign and take a short, easy trail to the tree! The spruce is HUGE and you can really see how gigantic it is when you look at it from afar.

Easy to get to. Nice short walk to see this massive beauty. Make sure to take in the scenery along the path as you walk to the big tree, lots to see. Only downfall is you can hear cats passing

January 8, 2012, still standing and still amazing.

How can you give the world's largest Sitka spruce anything LESS than five stars?? I mean, it's the biggest, it's not hard to find, and access is free, after you endure the endless drive to the rainforest side of the Olympic peninsula. It was a perfect sunny day yesterday, much more what you would expect in September than in early January, and the stroll to the tree was a little muddy but nothing treacherous. Especially in the winter, you will get much better photos in the Pacific Northwest if you use a blue filter on your camera (if you can), because our sunlight is so puny and weak. Even if you just take photos with your phone, though, you will be very impressed by this grand old tree. Don't be shy about sneaking around to the north side and talking to the spruce and giving it a pat or two (it's much too big to hug properly). If that's superstitious or silly, nobody will know you did it, and if it's not, well, that poor old tree must get tired of posing for all those pictures and being climbed all over by people who think it's a THING instead of a living, breathing BEING. Respect.

Wow, the tree (1,000 years old?!?) is pretty impressive. Just take a deep breath near the tree and it smells like Christmas. I have never seen a tree with such a large trunk. Take a picture while on the trunk and you will definitely feel small :) If you are in the Lake Quinault area, just take the South Shore area and follow the signs to the tree. There is a parking lot off the street, and the tree is less than 10 minutes away. P.S. We did the drive around the entire loop, and it took about an hour. I would think twice about driving all the way around if you have a small car or a camper: most of the way, it's gravel and bumpy roads.

World's Largest Spruce - so huge I couldn't take a picture of the whole thing

Worth a stop to see the world's largest spruce tree. You do just want to go up and do a tree hug. Over a thousand years old.

Awesomely huge tree (Washington's 3rd largest!). Definitely worth the quick 5-minute walk down a nice trail to see this behemoth.

"Honey, let's go check out the Star Wars mural."…read more (silence) There are many times when I suspect that Mr. K rolls his eyes on our little road trips. We are going where? To see what? I came across this local gem when browsing the highest rated spots in Olympia. It was an easy stroll from the center of town and just a couple blocks from the Olympia Coffee Roasting Company. When asking a local for directions to the mural, he informed me that his friend created the mural and although it is a caricature, all characters are truthful in their representation. He was dead serious when describing the artist's motivation. This is when I turn to Mr. K and nod knowingly. Just stick with me, kid. The mural is painted on the side of an apartment building and is in good condition. Someone actually has their apartment in the Death Star. **jealous** The grassy area alongside the building appears to be home to the only food cart in town, so it was a fun little journey of discovery. Not to say all my wanderings are successful. But in this case, the Force was with me.

They are on Heron and Wishkah (parallel one way streets, one block apart) between F and K Steets. The stars embedded in the concrete here aren't as large (physically) as those found down in La-La Land, but they still reveal an interesting roster of individuals from Aberdeen. I was specifically looking for Kurt Cobain's (of Nirvana) star. I found it in front of the former location of Rosevear's Music Center at 210 E Wishkah St. This is where Cobain received his first electric guitar at the age of 14. Like Cobain, the music store is unfortunately long gone...the closest open business is currently a behavioral health center. Sadly coincidental considering Cobain's musical rise to stardom and unfortunate end. Some other notable stars here include NFL Hall of Famers, John Elway and John Madden, Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brothers, William "Bill" Boeing, the founder of Boeing Airplane Company, Congressional Medal of Honor Winners, an astrophysicist, a Nobel Prize winner, the creator of the first cable television system...the list goes on and on.
