Downtown Aberdeen Walk of Fame - Kurt Cobain's star at the former location of Rosevear's Music Center where Cobain received his first electric guitar at the age of 14

Stars aren't just found on the Hollywood Boulevard walk of fame. In downtown Aberdeen Washington,…read moreyou'll find 91 Stars embedded in the downtown sidewalks. They are on Heron and Wishkah (parallel one way streets, one block apart) between F and K Steets. The stars embedded in the concrete here aren't as large (physically) as those found down in La-La Land, but they still reveal an interesting roster of individuals from Aberdeen. I was specifically looking for Kurt Cobain's (of Nirvana) star. I found it in front of the former location of Rosevear's Music Center at 210 E Wishkah St. This is where Cobain received his first electric guitar at the age of 14. Like Cobain, the music store is unfortunately long gone...the closest open business is currently a behavioral health center. Sadly coincidental considering Cobain's musical rise to stardom and unfortunate end. Some other notable stars here include NFL Hall of Famers, John Elway and John Madden, Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brothers, William "Bill" Boeing, the founder of Boeing Airplane Company, Congressional Medal of Honor Winners, an astrophysicist, a Nobel Prize winner, the creator of the first cable television system...the list goes on and on. If you are interested, click on the link for this listing to read more. If you find yourself in Aberdeen, grab a cup of coffee from the Nirvana Coffee Co (located right around the corner from Cobain's star) and spend some time finding all the stars!

"Gateway to the Olympic Peninsula"…read more I was passing though Aberdeen and decided to make a stop here after a long drive. I ended up doing a quick Kurt Cobain pilgrimage because I was such a big fan of Nirvana back in my younger days. Aberdeen is the town that Kurt grew up in. It is an old, blue-collar industrial city in Washington that is situated at the mouth of the Chehalis and Wishkah rivers in Grays Harbor County. I made stops at Kurt Cobain Memorial Park, his childhood home and saw the Nirvana mural in downtown. The welcome sign for Aberdeen pays homage to Nirvana with the "Come As You Are" song name at the bottom of the sign. There are some old drawbridges to look at and a river walkway along the Chehalis River where you can check out the Compass Rose public art piece. Other than that, I found this city to be run-down and very congested. Many of the old houses are in need of renovation. Not to mention there is both graffiti and homeless people everywhere. The only happening thing in town was the local Walmart which was jam-packed full of people.

It's quaint and slightly dismal. Lotsa panhandling. The have a Walmart and a few normal non-small…read moretown stores. Lotsa banks for some reason. Speed limit is super low. The houses in this city are in desperate need of a makeover, but maybe no one probably bothers since it's always raining, but the green algaelike moss growing on the houses makes the town look ghetto. They have signs...SIGNS that tell you not to give money to panhandlers since it promotes drugs and alcohol. Seems like a perfect little town to start a meth lab. But the sign says as you're driving in, "Come as you are"

The first day it was a cheese quiche with some fresh fruit; the second day was French toast served with some sliced fresh fruit. Plenty of fuel until lunch. The historic "colonial revival" home was built in 1905 and it was a delight to stay here. This inn is the only Bed & Breakfast on Washington's central coast area. Nice to see that the inn survived the pandemic.

We live in Las Vegas and we were visiting Aberdeen for a funeral. This is the town my husband grew up in and he hadn't been back in over 20 years. We could not find Hotels in the area, only motels. I was pleasantly surprised to have found this B&B and quickly booked the Canterbury room. It was clean, cozy and spacious. The bathroom was large and it had a lot of counter space for makeup and toiletries. The Aberdeen weather in March is pretty cold, but it was nice to return to a nice cozy and warm room in the evenings after spending the day with family. Breakfast was amazing! Billy, Cindy's son, is a great cook and very hospitable just like her. I returned to Las Vegas and missed eating my breakfasts overlooking the harbor and the beautiful Broadway Hill neighborhood. We also enjoyed great conversations a couple of days with a Doctor whom we met there. It was a great visit/vacation to my husband's hometown. Thank you Cindy and Billy for your hospitality! I highly recommend A Harbor View Inn.

In 1985, the route was extended (on paper only) by the state legislature to US 101 near Queets. This section has yet to be built...after nearly four decades, it just might never be built. In addition to being known as the "Hidden Coast Scenic Byway," this road is also known as having more documented Bigfoot (Sasquatch) sightings than any other road in the country. C'iatqo (pronounced SEA-at-co) is the name used by several Indian nations with stories of encounters passed down through the generations. Along the way as you leave Hoquiam, you'll travel adjacent to the Grays Harbor National Wildlife Refuge, and once you cross the Humptulips River, you'll pass several cranberry bogs. Once you are past the junction with SR 115, the road that leads to the city of Ocean Shores, you'll be traveling north along the Pacific Ocean. This is my favorite section of this road. Twists and turns will take you up and down along ocean-facing bluffs, and through small coastal canyons and ravines with peeks of the Pacific. This portion forms a part of the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary. You'll eventually enter the little town of Seabrook. This is a great place to spend the day enjoying the beach, unique shops, great restaurants and on Friday evenings in the summer, outdoor concerts at the Sunset Amphitheatre Park. Stay long enough and you'll experience views of Pacific Ocean sunsets while you enjoy the cool evenings and live music. Heading north out of town, you'll continue to travel along the Pacific, through dense forests and eventually end up at Taholah, the administrative center of the Quinault Indian Nation. Be sure to visit the Quinault Tribal Museum before turning around and heading back to wherever the road takes you.
