On a Saturday, you need to book, even for the pubs, and we were completely caught out. Eventually, after ringing through the pubs, we managed to get a table at 8pm at Rossini. Inside, it's nicely decorated, if a bit traditional-English-Italian; various plants, wine bottles, and watercolours in shades of bue and terracotta. The main thing that hit me was the lack of noise from outside, just the noise of customers, and a slightly odd soundtrack of Westlife and Dido, though this was barely audible and, I assume, mainly for the kitchen staff. I skipped a starter but nabbed some of the other half's arancini balls - fried risotto balls - and they didn't dissapoint. Lightly flavoured and the perfect consistency, and served with a lovely rep pepper sauce. For main I tucked in to/devoured a beef, chicken, ham and cheese calzone. And it was delicious. And I finished it. The beef was nice and spicy, the same as the meatballs, and everything was heated through nicely, bound by a tomato sauce. For something like £8.95, this seemed like great value to me as I was stuffed. But, true to form, not stuffed enough, as I had a nice and simple chocolate-nut sundae for dessert. Toffee and vanilla ice-cream with whipped cream and nuts with chocolate sauce. Sounding good isn't it? We polished off the meal with a shot of limoncello each, despite the young waitress not really knowing what it was, and left feeling full and happy. A gem for Ulverston as it's not awash with this kind of eating - it's good to remember there's more than just pubs to visit. Though those are good too.

Booking is highly recommended as there's limited seating but they'll do their best to squeeze you in if they can. As we were visiting over the Another Fine Fest weekend - all dedicated to Stan Laurel - we booked at least a week in advance for the four of us. Service was warm from the moment we stepped through the door and continued throughout the evening; the small space means you might feel slightly awkward stood in the doorway but someone will come and find you! The menu is split into sharer boards / vegetarian / fish & seafood / meat so it's easy to navigate and choose your dishes. There's also a taster menu available if there's more than four of you but you don't get control over the dishes. After some deliberation - and advice from the waitress - we decided to share the pulled pork; pork belly with crackling; potatoes with saffron aioli; beetroot & goats cheese small board; roasted cauliflower with almonds; large cured meat platter; hummus & flatbread; plaice; wood pigeon; and feta & courgette fritters. As usual with tapas restaurants, everything came once ready, so we had a steady stream of food arriving to the table and empty plates being taken away. Stand outs included the plaice (I'm an infrequent fish eater but could have had the whole dish to myself), roasted cauliflower - it's not easy to make cauliflower exciting - and the cured meat platter. Washed down with a bottle of vinho verde, the whole experience was excellent from start to finish. Ulverston is lucky to have L'al Churrasco and I'm sure its popularity will simply grow from here.

The other half's parents live in the town so have frequented The Hot Mango a number of times but this was my first visit. Our table did have a reserved sign on but not until 1.30pm - it was around 12pm at this point - and the waitress was lovely and welcoming, encouraging us to take a seat despite this. We ordered some drinks and looked over the menu. Well, we were presented with three menus, which was a tad confusing; it transpired that the main 'formal' menu was only to show us the drinks options, and then there was breakfast served until 3pm, and then a main Sunday lunch menu, with roasts and hot or cold sandwiches. Once we managed to get our heads around this, it was easy enough to decide what we each wanted! Not wanting anything too heavy, I ordered a simple sausage & bacon roll with red sauce, and split a portion of chips on the table for £1; for the record, I also snaffled some salad from the other half's baguette but that's nowhere near as exciting as chips. The roll was lovely and soft - proper white bread - with plenty of butter seeping in as it was warmed by the sausage & bacon. It was a bit of a treat but nothing crazy, and totally worth it. Other dishes around the table were mushrooms on toast, an omelette with hash browns on the side, and a goats cheese & roasted vegetable baguette. It really is a menu with something for everyone, especially if you want different types of meals i.e. breakfast vs. Sunday dinner. A friendly, relaxed environment which reflects the feel of Ulverston as a whole with some tasty food to boot.
