Although we were originally heading for Gillams, location and general availability of tables (it was Father's Day AND the Stan Laurel 'Another Fine Fest' over this weekend, so many places had taken booking or were full to the rafters) meant we decided to have a late breakfast / brunch / lunch at The Hot Mango instead.
The other half's parents live in the town so have frequented The Hot Mango a number of times but this was my first visit. Our table did have a reserved sign on but not until 1.30pm - it was around 12pm at this point - and the waitress was lovely and welcoming, encouraging us to take a seat despite this.
We ordered some drinks and looked over the menu. Well, we were presented with three menus, which was a tad confusing; it transpired that the main 'formal' menu was only to show us the drinks options, and then there was breakfast served until 3pm, and then a main Sunday lunch menu, with roasts and hot or cold sandwiches. Once we managed to get our heads around this, it was easy enough to decide what we each wanted!
Not wanting anything too heavy, I ordered a simple sausage & bacon roll with red sauce, and split a portion of chips on the table for £1; for the record, I also snaffled some salad from the other half's baguette but that's nowhere near as exciting as chips. The roll was lovely and soft - proper white bread - with plenty of butter seeping in as it was warmed by the sausage & bacon. It was a bit of a treat but nothing crazy, and totally worth it.
Other dishes around the table were mushrooms on toast, an omelette with hash browns on the side, and a goats cheese & roasted vegetable baguette. It really is a menu with something for everyone, especially if you want different types of meals i.e. breakfast vs. Sunday dinner.
