Booking is highly recommended as there's limited seating but they'll do their best to squeeze you in if they can. As we were visiting over the Another Fine Fest weekend - all dedicated to Stan Laurel - we booked at least a week in advance for the four of us. Service was warm from the moment we stepped through the door and continued throughout the evening; the small space means you might feel slightly awkward stood in the doorway but someone will come and find you! The menu is split into sharer boards / vegetarian / fish & seafood / meat so it's easy to navigate and choose your dishes. There's also a taster menu available if there's more than four of you but you don't get control over the dishes. After some deliberation - and advice from the waitress - we decided to share the pulled pork; pork belly with crackling; potatoes with saffron aioli; beetroot & goats cheese small board; roasted cauliflower with almonds; large cured meat platter; hummus & flatbread; plaice; wood pigeon; and feta & courgette fritters. As usual with tapas restaurants, everything came once ready, so we had a steady stream of food arriving to the table and empty plates being taken away. Stand outs included the plaice (I'm an infrequent fish eater but could have had the whole dish to myself), roasted cauliflower - it's not easy to make cauliflower exciting - and the cured meat platter. Washed down with a bottle of vinho verde, the whole experience was excellent from start to finish. Ulverston is lucky to have L'al Churrasco and I'm sure its popularity will simply grow from here.

Just GREAT!…read more Its one of the small gems that either you know about, or you don't. Passed on by word-of-mouth This place sits in a ally off Penny Street and you could miss it unless you were looking. The café sits on the second floor (I presume their is some wheelchair access somewhere), and is decorated with modern stylish, but comfortable (ie homely), decoration. The menu consists mostly of veggie food, if not all, and consists of your usual home-style meals (some with veggie twists), and most served with a salad. And very very very tasty, and well priced, and well just lovely. The staff and overall service were great and super friendly! I can't think of any more great things to say about this place! I totally recommend it to anyone! STOP READING THIS REVIEW AND GO NOW AND ENJOY IT!

The sandwich was pretty basic, but I dipped it into the yummy beef goulash. The meal really hit the spot. I would've liked to sit and take my time, but the cafe was packed and there were groups waiting for tables. The staff never pressured me to hurry up, but I didn't feel comfortable taking up a table for 3 when there were people waiting to eat. It's a decent cafe, but definitely don't expect to kill time here. Dessert selection looked good, the apple pie was sold out so it must be a fan favorite!

The Wolfhouse café is part of small 'Wolfhouse' complex of converted outbuildings and wooden cabins also comprising a gift shop, a gallery, and a quirky garden with children's play area. The gallery was shut on our January visit, but everything that was open was in the best possible taste and oozing a relaxed charm. Although only going on one visit, the culinary firepower here seems to be beyond outstanding! Ignore the fact that their website lacks contact details or even an address - this is probably just them being arty! Instead, click through under 'Goods' to 'Savouries' http://wolfhousekitchen.co.uk/goods/savouries/ and 'Pâtisserie' http://wolfhousekitchen.co.uk/goods/patisserie-menu/patisserie-menu-2/ and feast your eyes. Both myself and my friend had different and interesting Pukka herbal tea blends, and a chalkboard advertised that their coffee beans were roasted by a local Lancaster business, with Valrhona hot chocolate, so I think they have the drinks covered. I had goat's cheese, pistachio and prune cake which I think may be this recipe http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/cheese_pistachio_and_85849 from The Little Paris Kitchen series on BBC2. My friend had a salted caramel slice, which I also tried and it was good. But my cake worked for me on a whole lot of levels - the colours, sweet-savoury flavours, the textures - see photo. The cake display was very impressive, with other options spread along the sweet-savoury spectrum. I note that the pâtisserie list on The Wolfhouse website just goes on and on and on, with 20-30 items on the list advertised as being available each day. This quote from their 'Savouries' webpage sums up the cheerfully inventive spirit, "When we run out of one thing, we find something else to cook. Simple! It's just so much more fun that way!" With so much inventive spirit, plus everything so well-sourced and made from scratch, I think we can safely say that this 30-seater café is a better option for the serious foodie than a lot of fine dining places. Plus, it is totally relaxed with great staff, and priced at not much above your average country tearoom. Highly recommended.

It's not really the kind of place you'd go to have a sit down lunch, but this location does have a couple of tables inside and usually a couple outside, so you do have the option to sit and eat instead of taking away. (Diggles has another location near the bus station, too, but that one has no seating inside.) It's a good place to grab a sausage roll or pasty. My particular favorite is their sausage sandwich; it's simple, delicious and will run you about £2. The staff is friendly and the food is fresh. Once you eat here, you'll never settle for Gregg's again.
