Overall, we have supported the studio and program in good faith for that time period. A little over a year ago, our 9-year-old daughter was encouraged by the studio to move into "Black Belt" training, we were told it was the right next step for her development. What was not made clear to me was that this involved a three-year financial contract. In hindsight, that three-year financial commitment for a young child's extra curricular now feels manipulative and financially driven rather than child-centered. The contract identifies our minor child as the "buyer." I did not sign the agreement, nor was I aware that a three-year contractual obligation had been entered into on her behalf, despite sharing joint legal custody and joint decision-making authority with her father. I understood this to be a recommended commitment to training - not a binding long-term contract. When our daughter's schedule changed and she could no longer meet the time commitment, I requested cancellation. I expected maybe a standard extra month payment, the typical 30 day notice that most memberships of this nature would ask for when a cancellation is requested, but I was informed that a 25% penalty on the full contract amount (the FULL amount - not the remaining amount) would apply, resulting in a fee of over $1700 to cancel, and that the agreement was fully binding. After multiple written attempts to resolve the issue professionally, responses were delayed and inflexible. I attempted to address this privately before leaving a review. Notably, the contract (that I never signed, initialed, or saw) also contains language attempting to restrict negative online reviews, a practice that federal law prohibits when it comes to honest consumer feedback. Things that are objectively more serious than fourth-grade karate that do not require a three-year contract (of ADULTS): a post-employment non-compete, a Gold's Gym membership in the mid 2000s, a whole house rental agreement, a literal marriage, and virtually any MLM subscription - just to name a few, all of which are generally much easier to unwind. I value commitment. But I also value giving my child the opportunity to explore different interests as she grows. A year and a half in one activity is not casual and flippant for a nine-year-old, neither is a $5800 "investment" into basic training, it was an honest effort and we are ready to move on, but refuse to pay an absurd cancellation fee of over $1700. Locking a child into a multi-year obligation is intense and is something parents should fully understand before enrolling their children in this studio.

Professor Paul Tom is a black belt under Flavio Behring, one of the only red belts in the world of Jiujitsu. When I started training here over a year ago, Professor Paul welcomed me with such warmth, and I knew instantly that he cares deeply about the growth and development of his students. In addition to his excellent lessons on the many techniques and their details, he is an excellent storyteller (especially the ones about Rickson) and always makes the extra effort to improve our game. I felt deeply honored to receive my blue belt from him. Professor Paul's two sons Nate and Trevor are also black belts who provide a fresh contrast to Paul's "old school" jiujitsu, by focusing on not only fundamentals, but also sport jiujitsu as well. They are also amazing instructors with awesome hearts. -The Drilling. There are days where we only focus on drilling one specific move, or days when we focus on sequences and/or several moves. The curriculum here is well developed based upon the core principles of posture, pressure, and precision. All instructors and upper belts also make great efforts in walking through the details with you and addressing student-specific needs. -The Sparring. There are no meat heads here trying to smash complete beginners (and if they somehow enter the dojo, there is always someone here who will be the enforcer). Everyone is super chill and purely interested in working together to improve. If you are new, I highly suggest sparring with a purple belt or higher, so they can guide you in learning how to spar with the greatest effectiveness and highest state of calm. -The Family. I will miss training with people here. It is like a little family, and all members who stick around will become friends and find a tight-knit community of fighters that will not hesitate to protect one another and their loved ones.

If you're tired of all the fluff and lack of heart at other martial arts schools in the area, then " just directa your feetza" to the Shao Long Academy. Be respectful; Shifu Lefler can spin kick your head sideways before you can quote your favorite Van Damme film. Seriously though, you will learn the finest traditional Chinese martial arts techniques combined with contemporary conditioning drills to strengthen your mind and body while you become the ultimate Gongfu warrior. My daughter has been attending this academy for several months and there has been a marked improvement in her self-esteem, confidence, and general fitness. The fortitude required to teach others is a skill not many possess, and the progress I've seen in Shifu Lefler's students is a reflection of his devotion to his craft. For Shifu Lefler, this isn't just a hobby - it's a way of life.

It was a long-shot but we figured why not try something different for her. The instructor/owner, Itzak, is super nice and kept his students engaged, disciplined but still having fun. The practices are traditional and it's not hard for my child to follow. The pricing is fair and still within our budget. Along with virtual lessons, he actually has a Tai Chi app as well and I actually feel a little sore after trying it. Great options during this hard year especially. The studio is really clean and organized. The owner follows the guidelines for Covid-precautions and safety measures so peace of mind is there. The mats don't smell which is what I usually always smell when I go into other studios/gyms. That's a plus for me. The location was not hard to find, convenient and I didn't have any issues with parking. Only con is that I like to go eat the seafood place next door.
