I am overwhelmed with gratitude for what Working Class Acupuncture has done for me over the years. They have provided competent, compassionate, affordable service for a wide-ranging assortment of maladies, whether it's insomnia, chronic pain, acute pain, depression, an allergy flare-up, or anything else under the sun. They are open seven days a week. They even strive to be open for a few precious hours on holidays, provided that an employee is willing to take a shift that day. They keep their prices low. And best of all, they have enough openings every day so that you can nearly always make a last-minute appointment!!! When I think of how difficult it is to schedule an appointment with a primary care doctor at my HMO (typically the wait time is 4 to 6 weeks!), or how long I have to wait in the urgent care center or emergency room when I have a sudden medical need (typically 2 to 4 hours!!!), it makes me especially grateful to know that I can go online and make my own appointment to see somebody at WCA the same day or the next day. And did I mention that they even have early-morning appointments and appointments mid-evening? That's a real plus for people who work full time at 9 to 5 jobs because they don't have to take any time off work to have an appointment at WCA. They can just schedule something before their workday or afterward. I know many people have never had acupuncture because they are skeptics or because they fear the pain of needles, but trust me, acupuncture really works, and the needles don't hurt as much as you think they do. Try it sometime, and I'm pretty sure you'll have a good experience. I always do. I should also add that WCA's model of community acupuncture is so effective and well regarded that it has spawned many similar clinics around the country. So relaxing and such a calm, loving, healing atmosphere. I'm so happy it's affordable. This is not a spa nor a private, upscale experience. You sit on clean covered recliner chairs and can choose different rooms. The atmosphere varies slightly with music/lights/how many chairs etc. I personally love community acupuncture because I like the communal feeling of cocooned resting people around me. There is plenty of space between chairs and people stay quiet and don't interact. It feels like everyone is meditating, it's so peaceful and it's nice to be in community with people being gentle and vulnerable and who are seeking healing. I feel spacey-high yet energized and renewed every time I leave. It's helped my energy levels, helped my aches and pains, and lifted my mood. I will keep going back. I was extremely disappointed in my most recent visit. Pre-Covid. I had amazing time post Covid not so much I will not be going back. There's no signs on their website or there a reminder email stating that a mask is required. I would've not made an appointment if that were the case, I went ahead and tried but I was unable to relax because of the mask requirement and being bullied into wearing one. Sunday was appointment number three. WCA impressed me with weekend hours, another victory for the working class. I decided to stay down in the lower room, but tried a new chair on the right side of the room. It was a very comfortable chair I found and the vibe just seemed better around there. Matthew is the best provider I have ever seen! The kindness of WCA and his skills have helped me more with my chronic pain than anything else the past few months. This organization does so much work to take care of those who need it most by making acupuncture accessible to literally everyone! I'm in love with this place. Be aware that it is very different than one-on-one, private thing. It's a group, open room, come in then leave when you wake up. Yes, wake up. So what happens here is you come in for an appt, quietly you find a recliner and get relaxed, then one of the acupuncturist come to you and stick you with needles. You keep your close on but shoes and socks off. Knees down, elbows down and head/face is where you get stuck. No back side at all. So once you're relaxed and stuck, you just lay there (while peaceful music plays) they explain that you will fall asleep once it's takes effect, and let me tell you- IF you have not had a peaceful sleep, you fall asleep (for maybe an hour or 45 min) and it's DEEP and you feel so so good when you wake up. Both rested and also the acupuncture works. Which I love that there isn't really a 'time limit' on it, when the therapy is working- they LET IT WORK. Their name says that it's 'working class' so mostly for people who need it, but are limited with money. You pay WHAT you CAN. $15-$45. Which is a little weird I think- but so nice that I can pay what I can afford. Then when I can pay extra I can and when I can't, they let me pay less. They are all about YOU. Honestly I haven't been to any other place to compare it to other places or more one on one places, but for my first time- I've been here so many time cuz it honestly works sooo great. BEWARE: since it is a group open room style. SNORING IS A THING. and it's the worst- I e been in a dead sleep then have been guilted awake and hit my needles. I went in for the first visit and first acu treatment on a Tuesday. I was seen by Whitsitt. He was extremely thorough in explaining how it worked as well asking me about my health concerns. Full disclosure this is my only Acupuncture experience so I obviously can't compare to other experiences. I have received treatment at Working Class 5 different times. I have received treatment from two different Acupuncturists and I really feel comfortable with John whom is very skilled and has been practicing I believe for 10 years. I am so impressed with the concept and how they work on a sliding scale, making services accessible to all. When you walk in you are greeted with a volunteer whom is very kind and friendly. They offer tea and comfy seating in the waiting area which is nice. The treatment area is dimmed with relaxing music, reclining lazy boy type chairs and after you receive the needles you are left to relax. You can stay as long as you like and there's even a board to write your name should you wish to nap and need to be waken up at a certain time. I felt very comfortable despite being in a room with other folks. I have read other reviews about the blankets not being washed and concerns about the lack of sterile environment. This did not bother me- the space is very comforting and clean. They use new unopened needles, I have witnessed the Acupuncturist washing their hands and using hand sanitizer constantly. If you're really concerned about privacy this wouldn't be the space for you. If however you are curious about acupuncture I would highly recommend this community. My 5-star rating for WCA is based on what it is - a community acupuncture model. It's not your standard 1:1 experience, so just go into this knowing that. The setup is generally no-frills. But that's not what this is about. It's acupuncture done in a group setting and costs are set on a sliding scale. Initial visit is $25-$45, and return visits are $15-$35. I pay the top end because I can get reimbursed by my insurance (I have to submit the claim myself) and I'm down to go through that extra step to support this model, which allows others who don't have insurance to get relief on the cheap. The first visit involves some quick paperwork, and then you're in. You discuss some initial concerns with your acupuncturist, and then roll into the quiet room - a low-lit room filled with recliners. You choose a recliner, sit down, and get poked. They don't generally do acute, localized work. They do modify the needle placements to focus on your issues, but hit mostly points on your head, ears, hands, legs and feet. At least for me that's how they treat. They treat you and then you're welcome to sit as long as you like. I generally last about an hour. Because it's set up in a group atmosphere, you are subject to the noises of others in the room. Coming, going, snoring, etc. If you can't handle this, go elsewhere. It's a little distracting, but generally when I have needles in I'm so relaxed I don't notice. Your best bet is to let yourself nod off. You can leave a note on the white board if you need to make sure someone wakes you up by a certain time. Any of the roving techs can de-needle you when you're ready. This is a really awesome model of health care, and they do great work here. It's super easy to get an appointment same-day, which I really like. I suck at planning ahead. WCA wins. read more

Love this place! KELLY is GENTLE fabulous, sweet. Matt was great too. I was referred to working class by a friend for my STUCK neck. It was seriously frozen for a few months, just not moving correctly, and I was starting to get very concerned. I think it was from an ice fall during the 2016 downtown Portland snow storm. I had great results for my dog with acupuncture in the past but this was my first time personally. I went three times in ten days (acupuncture is accumulative, best results clustered in more than one or two sessions) and my neck is 100% back to perfect! I actually really prefer the group acupuncture experience not just because it is the less expensive way to go (sliding price scale, yay!) but I am the type who doesn't like to be too "dotted on" in spas etc. They are super friendly, there if you need and they check in on you occasionally but they let you rest in silence. i truly look forward to trying every single recliner! (cover sheets changed out between sitters) & every practitioner! the overall experience was really comforting. the space is large and open. in the waiting area- there were little tables and chairs to fill out your paperwork & even recliners for those who prefer comfy seats. i really love tea...a lot...but sadly didn't see free tea to drink (as mentioned in other reviews,) though they have some for sale that they mixed themselves, as well as other things like books and shirts. there is a small free box, in case you have any spiritual books, etc that you would like to gift. also, considering the times, i would really like to see paper seat covers in the bathroom... everyone was so sweet, welcoming, & chill. as a cat, i loved the quietude & gentle hushed tones. since it's a shared space- they recommend to bring headphones or ear plugs in case you are especially sensitive ...i am, and didn't find that necessary on this particular visit. though i personally would've loved the meditative background "music" (singing bowls etc) to be a bit louder.. perhaps it is depending which seat you choose..? the ambiance was lovely. my acupuncturist made me feel cared for and heard, though i did have some pain in one needle that didn't subside... (which they said would likely happen)... i should've been more assertive and let them know that it hadn't and that i would've liked an adjustment (which they said they would do if need be) therefore i wasn't able to get into that luscious floaty acupuncture meditation zone... but! i look forward to trying again! my acute pain means i likely need quite regular appointments, and they assured me that we could figure out how to make it as affordable as i need so that i don't choose to go without the healing support. i cannot say how much that means to me, i feel beyond comforted by that notion. i read the literature around the space and learned that this place (& many "daughters" around the country) are/is designed to be of service more than to make money. they seek to employ practitioners as well as help as many people as possible, and to do so means they have volunteers and sliding scale payments. (i would pay as much as possible to help this endeavour so that they don't struggle to break even.) this is a coop (& it shows.) you can tell they really care. while there are tiny details i would prefer to be edited... so far, i highly recommend Working Class Acupuncture & will definitely be returning! This is a wonderful community acupuncture clinic. Because it's sliding scale, I was able to go 4 times in one week to deal with a severe back spasm that had me nearly immobile. I saw four different practitioners, and they all were excellent. I was able to schedule same-day appointments even on the weekend. I am an acupuncturist myself who has worked at a community acupuncture clinic in Seattle. I am so disgusted by my recent experience at Cully with the morning volunteer receptionist today. Sarah informed me that my mask was not a 'real mask' and basically threw a KN95 mask at me, while proceeding to tell me I had to wear that while opening the door to a full open position, stating she had 'health problems,' and went to get the acupuncturist . Interestingly, this is the SAME mask that I have been wearing to my appointments here for over a year (I swear on my life), and I also wear it to other medical appointments & it has never been questioned. I was not able to get acupuncture today although I have been going to Cully for 10 years, but I will not be back. I wish someone had stood up & done what is right today, but I will be that person & I will seek care as needed by people who are not making up their own rules, that change on a frequent basis without notice. read more

I like community acupuncture and my lady is very skilled. She gets all 5 stars. The clinic is filthy Needles on the floor every time I've been there (6x). They cover the donated recliners with polar fleece blankets that do not get changed between clients. Great way to spread community acquired infections like MRSA, C-diff, shingles, and other lovely bugs. People, they are puncturing your skin deeply!!! There are no gloves for the acupuncturist chair side at any station. Open needle packs left lying around. The bio hazard needle boxes were full beyond the fill lines with open tops. These all violate code and common sense I'm a nurse so with all those health care code violations, I won't be back. I hope my acupuncturist moves to a clean space. I get debilitating vomit-for-hours migraines. Sumatriptan doesn't really work, and I'd rather not take more meds than absolutely necessary. Since coming to WCA, they have started to space out and don't last as long. After the initial three times a week sessions, I'm down to once a week. As an added bonus, the chairs are comfortable, it's always nice and toasty, and I can get an uninterrupted nap in without being bothered by anyone (with or without fur). Stick a fork in me, I'm done! Wait, no, stick a needle in me, I'm just getting started! After I woke up recently with excruciating shooting back pains I went to urgent care and got prescribed medication, which provided instant relief but no long term health improvements. I was at a loss on how to move forward (or move at all! So painful!) so I surveyed my friends. After the 90th person recommended acupuncture, I decided to face my fear of needles head on (get it?) and try some natural healing. I went to Working Class Acupuncture at the behest of a friend since I don't have insurance or an endless stream of disposable income. Treatment sessions are sliding scale and start at $15 with a $10 one time paperwork processing fee. They had a sale on punch cards when I was there, which brought the treatment price down to $13 a session. I can barely get my favorite martini in town for that price (Hendrick's gin, up, stirred, twist, if you would like to buy me one). I called the clinic and was able to get an appointment the same day. Note: their online booking system is a breeze. I met with John, who went over my areas of concern and reassured me my needle fear was unfounded. He then led me into the community treatment space, which was a bizarre experience. The room is filled with 7-10 recliner chairs per treatment space (three total spaces though two of the rooms are directly attached and open). It was so surreal to walk into a room full of people passed out with needles sticking out of them while ambient music is playing. I was wondering if I was about to join a legal junkie culture. Spoiler alert: I was. John was right, my first set of needles, though a bit unusual of a sensation, weren't bad at all. The feeling while you're getting treated can best be described as euphoric. You can feel the sensation running through you and then an hour or two later, you're done. It's addicting. I'm hooked. I have since gone to Working Class Acupuncture 10 times and barely notice I'm getting stabbed like a pin cushion. Though I have been treated by 5 acupuncturists so far, John is my Dr. Feelgood, he's the one that makes me feel all right. I do recommend the rest of them as well though I think I'm attached to the holder of my first needle for starting me on this intoxicating journey. I can proudly tell you that my back pain is completely gone. I have tested the strength of my healing by dancing in heels all night (poor choice, fun night) and can assure you I am fully recovered. I threw in a few more requests while I was being treated such as congestion (poof, gone), insomnia, (oh, sleep, hello!) and anxiety (I'm cool man, I'm cool) and was impressed to see almost immediate results for all of these ailments. If I wasn't a believer before, I am definitely a card-carrying, needle-toting, acupuncture enthusiast now. If you don't mind being treated in a room with others (it's ok, they're all passed out), then I suggest you support Working Class Acupuncture. 3 reasons why Working Class Acupuncture is the best place in the world accompanied with testimony: Bullwinkle is a skeptical guy. He doesn't trust magical remedies or things which are supposed to heal random stuff. He doesn't like being sold a bunch of nonsense. Reason #1: no one tries to sell you a bunch of nonsense. They even state that they don't really know how/why acupuncture works. I like honesty. Bullwinkle also has a tiny little moose wallet as he is poor, like most people, and can't afford quality health care. Reason #2: it is affordable. Sliding scale starts at $15/session and sessions can run as long as you like. I settle in around an hour and a half. Bullwinkle had never had acupuncture before coming to WCA. He was skeptical and poor but it was highly recommended. He had pain like every working class person does and wondered what he could do to relieve it. Reason #3: it works. Seriously. It's not going to heal your cancer or the ligament which you strained reaching for last salted caramel which fell behind the couch, but it will confront and relieve chronic pain from repetitive motions (work) and stress from life. At least, it does for me. This is why once a week I head in for an hour and a half of relaxation. Sure it's kinda hippie and takes some getting used to but all the people who work here are super nice and, what can I say, I feel better when I leave. There is also one person who is the best at acupuncturing (or whatever you call the act of filling you full of needles) but I will not tell you who s/he is as you will then take up all their precious spots and I will be sad. I love acupuncture but my insurance doesn't cover it and I normally cannot afford the expense most places charge. (75.00 per visit is about average). So when I moved here and found WCA, I was thrilled! No, it is not a spa type environment with tranquil fountains in the front running and white robes in your own room. It doesn't claim to be. It is comfortable chairs in the presence of others pursuing their own healing, and it was made affordable to the masses. This location is my favorite. The staff is great and I enjoy coming here, even though it is farther away than the Hillsdale one. If you're new to acupuncture, give this location a try! It is 15-35 sliding fee scale, with a one time 10 dollar new patient fee. There are WCA clinics all over the country as well. read more

This place is absolutely fantastic. I was looking for an acupuncturist but hate the high fees they charge. Then my back went out, or locked up and my chiropractor had done all he could do for me. I had to walk with a cane and very slowly. This was difficult because I am normally a very active 50 year old. My wife and I drove past WCA and stopped thinking we might get an appointment sometime soon. I got one that day with Michelle and within minutes of her inserting the needles, my pain was gone. Gone! I tried moving around to make it come back, but it didn't. I was able to walk out carrying my cane. I still had some pain but not like it was. My chiropractor was able to adjust me and I later had another acupuncture treatment and now my pain is very minimal and fading daily Michelle and everyone at this clinic are wonderful people. After a couple of frustrating (and costly) tries with the conventional Western model of acupuncture, I'm a recent convert to community acupuncture, with all the zeal that implies. So of course, on this trip up to Portland, I had to visit the mother ship (and by "had to", I mean both that I was really curious and dealing with a significant amount of stress and exhaustion from travel). I love love love Working Class Acupuncture! From the warm greeting as I entered to the peaceful vibe of the treatment room, I felt immediately at home. Like all CA centers, the treatments are affordable and there's no shame with wherever you are on the sliding scale of ability to pay (currently low-end for me). Whitsitt gave me a dreamy treatment--as in, it both left me feeling wonderful and I actually fell asleep for the better part of an hour, a highly unusual thing for me. I had been searching for a good, legitimate acupuncture clinic/acupuncturist for a few months. I had my list narrowed down to an expensive oriental medicine/naturopathic clinic & Working Class Acupuncture. I have searched high & low, far & wide for at lees at ONE bad review. Guess what, not one single bad review, or dirt or scandal article on this company. Making an appt was so easy. I just went on their website, made an acct (free) & booked appt! Upon my arrival I was greeted by a gem of a German/Austrian lady. Filled out my med history & met with the acupuncturist in the lobby. We went over goals on what I want to get out of acupuncture & we got started. If you get the honor of having Whitsitt as your acupuncturist you are blessed! He knows his acu points! I had a husband/wife imbalance & adrenal fatigue & low back pressure. After 2 sessions a week after 3 weeks I feel like my old happy self again! This month my monthly was late. I had told him that this past Friday when I went in. He picked some points & here I am 3 days later & all is back on track! This place is a blessing. I could not find one ill thing to say against them. I've improved in a matter of 3 weeks. They are knowledgable, compassionate & so affordable ($15 a session!) Thank you, Whitsitt! Ps. I'm SO SO sad to have to write this review. CW: transphobia Two friends of mine who are GNC / trans in two separate occasions went to Working Class Acupuncture's Cully Clinic. They went when Skip was the main punk on duty. Skip looked at their intake sheets and said, "Oh [patient name], what gender, he, she, it?" and laughed out loud with the person at reception: with the patient right there, visibly, within earshot. Not acceptable, and especially not in Portland in 2018, ever. I had been a fan of WCA, their model, a monthly sustainer when they opened their new training program, for years, but knew that their internal labor practices didn't necessarily match their external rhetoric. But their affordable community based acupuncture model was so great! I wanted to keep supporting them, but this is the last straw. I urge you all to go to their Facebook page and yelp reviews and comment on what you think about this and demand that they do better. For instance, maybe staff and punks can all get training and then monitoring from a trusted trans community member like Neola Hayes. Edited after the clinic and Skip's response: To my knowledge, "it" is not a gender that either of these individuals uses or that anyone I know in the QTGNC community uses voluntarily, and is usually used to intentionally make fun of (i.e. belittle, and therefore, cause harm to) people with nonbinary or nonconforming genders. That two separate QTGNC individuals, at least one of whom is POC, reported nearly identical incidents about the same practitioner on completely separate occasions, also speaks to the fact that this is a pattern and not an isolated incident caused by trying to do too many things at once, or any other excuse. I appreciate your attempt to apologize, and believe that it is a sincere attempt and a great first step. However, given the above factors, the apology reads as a simple attempt to minimize the concerns brought up in my original review. If Skip and WCA take seriously the incidents that happened, you will need to have some training, install some procedures and protocols for all staff working in all your clinics, and have some follow up by a trusted member of our community about how to provide trans and GNC-competent health care so they can vouch for WCA as an institution. Or, we can simply inform our community that you are not a trusted provider of trans and GNC-competent health care in the future. What a great place!! Having never tried acupuncture before they made feel quite comfortable about the treatment process and after reading their book I'm completely hooked and applaud their great business model. I have been in for treatments multiple times a week over the last 2 and a half months and have seen remarkable results. I'm not sore today thanks to my good friends at Working Class Acupuncture, and I'd like to give them a proper shout out. First, Acupuncture rocks. If you've never been, I can't recommend it enough. Enter Community Acupuncture. Their mission is to make acupuncture affordable for the middle class, and I can't thank them enough. Third, if you want the best possible community acupuncture experience, make your way to Working Class. I've only been to the Cully location, but it is my favorite acupuncture experience by far, private or community. I love the design of the space and have always found each of the 3 treatment rooms to be very clean and sublimely peaceful. I've been there many times now and have been treated by every practitioner except for the newest, Haley (who I look forward to seeing soon). Every experience has been positive and professional. ...and So relaxing... :) I have my favorite practitioners, of course - but they're all so well-trained that it doesn't feel necessary to advise heading toward a particular "acupunk." I was completely miserable the last month of my pregnancy - all kinds of aches and pains, sleepless nights, you name it. I'd never tried acupuncture and I was a little bit terrified, but friend after friend kept recommending this place to me, so I dove in. I'm so, so glad I did. I received the sweetest service from every member of the staff here. They made a wildly uncomfortable girl feel comfortable. The treatment was relatively painless and really did seem to help my aches, and the chairs - my gawd - I would have paid my $15-25 just to take a nap in one of their comfy chairs. This was the best sleep I got in third tri, and here's the best part: they let you sleep. For as long as you want. Uninterrupted. It's amazing. Now if only one of them would hold my five month old for me - Mommy could use a good nap. read more
