    Handmade Art.
    Joshua A.

My wife and I stopped in here after lunch at the nearby Kula Bistro (yum!). The owner and his dog greeted us as we rolled in. His son was blowing a bowl as we arrived. He cleared out a spot so we could watch from just a few feet away (even my wife in a wheelchair.) They explained what they were doing as we watched and seemed happy to share the experience. The owner even cleared us an easier path back to our car for my wife's wheelchair and offered us some bananas (growing on their trees) on the way out. The property is beautiful, owners friendly and their work is spectacular. And they make jewelry and ornaments, so even if your budget doesn't allow for a magnificent bowl, you can take home a piece of handmade art for the price of a couple of Maui cocktails.

Mike mentioned that he will soon be doing most of his cold work in a new studio near Carmel, CA (while still blowing glass in Maui).

Once their business changed from photo chemicals to digital image capture, Randy spent many years teaching Photoshop classes in his Kula Studio. Then he taught these classes all over the world. Randy has been making prints of my paintings since 1995. He and his wife Becky keep working until they get it right, i.e. the first day that I met them, Randy had just gotten his 1st Mac. Since I had been teaching on them we were still at it at 10 pm! I was Department Chair for Art & Design at a Community College in North Carolina for many years, while running my Illustrations & Design Studio simultainiously. After 20 years & a M.A. in Illistration and Design, I moved back to Hawaii. I had taken 2 years off to paint 40 watercolors for a show at the Kahala Hilton in Honolulu--my 1st, 1 person show! Six Months later, in July of 1994, I opened HeART of Lāna'i Gallery in Lāna'i City, Hawaii. By 1995, I was ready to have all of my 8"x10" and 4"x5" transparencies of my paintings scanned. I asked 2 friends who both were book publishers the same question. "What is the best professional photo lab in Hawaii?" The answer in both cases was: "Go to Maui. Have the Huffords make your prints,. They're the best in Hawaii and just a Ferry ride away from Lāna'i."
