I love the name of this place! As I walk down each aisle and throw copious amounts of goodies in my…read moretrolley, I know I'm going to Dai Phat (Die Fat). Not too sure if that's the pronunciation but let's just go with it hey! As I enter the door I'm greeted by staff who know me by name. They really like to get to know the regulars and it does make it feel like we are friends. Well they have food? Hello! I'll be anyone's bestie when it involves food. I cook a lot of Asian food, like 90% of my family meals. This place is right around the corner from me, but even not I would still travel to come here. Each week there is always something new and interesting I find and want to try. They have trolleys and baskets. I always, ALWAYS opt for the trolley since making the mistake of carrying a basket once and it was completely overloaded. I always have intentions of coming in 'just for a few things' but it never ends that way. From a huge freezer section to the left full of seafood, dumplings and vegan meat alternatives to name a few. A cool open fridge section with a huge variety of drinks, kimchi, tofu and vegetables. I could go on and on about the copious amounts of sauces, condiments, dried herbs, tinned foods, but you really need to go and see for yourself. What I love most is that they don't just stock one asian cuisine. I especially love the Indonesian and Japanese sections. There is also a butcher in the back. I'd love to buy organic but that's a pipeline dream for now. The chicken, beef and pork here is of great quality and fantastically priced. I'm talking under $10/kg for nearly every cut of meat. I make super savings by buying majority of my meats here. The only thing they don't stock is lamb and not a huge range of beef. So my fellow Yelp-tastic peeps. If you are in need of an Asian grocery store in the Western Suburbs then come and shop here. Then we can all eat, be merry and Dai Phat together!
If you're a fan of the king of fruits-that's durian for all you anti-durian eaters, come here! A…read moredear friend of mine bought me one when I was recovering from a surgery and shared about this supermarket. So I had to check it out myself when I was in this neighbourhood. I dropped in here last Sunday and was pleased to see them open. They stock a good variety of Vietnamese food, canned food, vegetables that mirrored a cone shaped mini spaceship, usual Asian veges and Vietnamese sweets. I was absolutely happy to find my favourite packet of fish balls and dried tofu in the freezer, that I use to shop for in Malaysia, so I happily took some and grabbed a couple of Asian sweets for the kids to sample. Didn't buy the durian though, which was a shame as I didn't feel like having a 'Durian Day'...oh well, perhaps next time. A durian cost $5.50 per fruit, which I thought was reasonably cheap! Tip: If you love soya bean milk, they sell them in a box of 8. The shopkeeper sold it to me for a discount as I had happily thrown a couple of coconut drink cans in the basket too. I'll post a picture of my yummy-licious fish ball noodle soup soon.
Driving down Hanson Road this afternoon saw my Spidey Sense tingling. There was an Asian…read moreSupermarket around somewhere and I was on a mission to find it. Well, as it happens, the search wasn't exactly long and arduous...strangely enough I think Hanson Road has perhaps the highest per capita quotient of Asian Markets to residents in THE WORLD! One that stands out, mainly for its facade, is the Chuan Phat Grocery, which has lovely big red foam letters above the entry. I had noticed this place before and today I chose to use my dwindling instant noodle supply as an excuse to drop in. Stocks have been filled adequately I might add! For those like myself, who go to a lot of Asian Supermarkets, know that everyone is different. This one has a butcher and also an impressive stock of various fish and seafood in the freezer. I also found the variety of kitchen supplies and utensils was very impressive and will require another visit or two to suss out all of the bargains. I also found it mildy entertaining that one of the owners children was asleep on top of some crates toward the back of the shop. Needless to say a number of jokes sprang to mind, but I was impressed by my level of self control, VERY impressed!
Before I start I am going to clarify that I have no intention of writing out the store name…read morethroughout this article.....so hence forth this Asian Super Market/Butcher will be known as 'Hung' (cool hey?)! I wept, salty noodle shaped tears, when I entered Hung. I know, at most Asian Supermarkets you find the odd noodle brand or flavour that you haven't tried before. Sooooo many new noodle types to throw onto the 'wheel of noodle fortune'. Surely Ian 'Turps' Turpie would be over the moon! Other than my noodle ecstasy, Hung is a solid store (hehe). There is plenty of sauce and spice mix options to try on your randomly dodgy cuts of, what I would assume is Beef, Lamb, Pork or Chicken...hmmm. Then, if you head toward the rear of the store, all of your dead animal dreams can come true with a small but useful Butcher. For the size of the store there is a lot to take in, so take the time!

Super cheap prices on everything you'd hope would be here. We got a massive jar of fried shallots (a must-have garnish for all Asian - and other - cooking), as well as fried garlic and dried mushrooms in large quantities. Their frozen dumplings are great prices and very tasty. They have a large range of frozen food which we made the most of. Though, stay away from the frozen ladyfinger bananas - they were awful. What little flavour they had was not good. There's a huge range of bulk packages of rice and noodles - we get our rice here for great prices. For flavour, there are rows upon rows of different sauces, toppings and recipe bases. Add to this a huge range of crockery and cooking equipment and you have all the ingredients for amazing homemade Asian feasts.

There is a huge variety of Asian ingredients, frozen and packaged meals, crockery, beverages, and cooking utensils. It is worth making the 5 minute trip out of the city, as this place is huge, and very rarely gets crowded inside. Just goes to show that you can't judge a book by its cover, right? There's a wide variety of stock to be found at this supermarket. The fruit and vegetable section looks fresh and colourful, just like it should. There's also plenty of trolley space between isles, and in my opinion that's one of the most important things. I hate when you're shopping and everyone is trying to get past you but all the trolleys are taking up space and it just ends up being a disaster. If you live in the area, I would shop here.
