Creepy Woodvale Creamatorium - on a dark moonless night it looks as if it should have recently escaped loons climbing over its wrought iron gates like a scene from Halloween. It's spooky to its bones, and oddly enough, that great enigma and self proclaimed 'Beast', Magick man Aleister Crowley is buried here. Amongst all the mausoleums, anchor ornamented tombs and broken angels you'll find him brooding six feet under. Enough said. The Woodvale Crematorium was a regular 'haunt' for me whilst studying for my BA. I lived just around the corner and found this a nice place to come and study without distraction. Another of the Nineteenth Century cemeteries in the city, this one is currently full! Compared to some of the other sites, this is the goth's best bet. It is a classic cemetery from a hammer horror film and there are numerous impressive crypts and statues dotted throughout. A small chapel is there with an impressive gothic arch tacked on the side. As Richard mentions, it is also the final resting place of Crowley and worth having a wander around to find his headstone. Whilst you are right in the middle of busy Lewes road, 2 minutes in and you really feel that you have escaped the city and stumbled onto a film set. Don't get put off by funeral stigma, this is a lovely undervisited site. read more

You'd never really know Woodvale was there unless somebody told you (or you looked at a road sign, but who does that). Located just off of the extremely busy Lewes Road, this is a really quite nice place despite the obvious connotations. Here you will find one of the largest and most green areas in probably the entire city area. The statues and more elaborate graves are actually quite stunning, providing a calming atmosphere. There is a lot of room to roam in and a number of places to explore within the gardens. Rumour has it that you can even peak through a crack in one of the larger tombs, providing a view to the sinister insides. read more

Woodvale has to be the most beautiful place of rest I have been to in a long time. I have now made up my mind as to where I want to be cremated. Go and have a look and see for yourself :D read more
