Truly, a lovely place to beso quiet and peaceful. This memorial, situated on top of a huge evergreen planted Rockery, was sculpted by local scultor Leslie Sharp. It was started in 1949 and unveiled on 27/07/1951.I know this because I was there as a young boy. It was donated by Nancy Price, who lived locally, supported by Members of The Peoples Theatre, London.
When first opened it had a bubbling water supply with a drinking pool for the birds. There were two carved pidgeon statues but, sadly, these got stolen.
The material is Forest of Dean stone, with incut black lettering, stating
"In memory of Warrior Birds who gave their lives on Active Service 1939 1945 and for the use and pleasure of living birds.
I went back the other day.it is now fenced off and padlocked, (though I managed to gain entry) and found no bubbling brook, no drinking pool and all overgrown!!
So sad.glad I had the happy days of youth to remember it all. read more
