It's been 6 years since I've been here and it's nice to see they survived the pandemic. Still a large library of board games available, both for purchase and to play in store. Apparently they also offer a consignment service where you can sell your products through them? Not too sure the details but there are shelves full of seemingly random stuff so if you're looking for an escrow to help sell valuables this could be an option..... You can come in and play games all day for a flat price of $7 (up from $5 six years ago, which is impressive). Have to bring in your own drinks though as there's no cafe although I guess fantuan does exist. Maybe there's a fridge of canned drinks I wasn't paying attention. We visited on Pokemon Day and I had lots of fun. Since it was Pokemon Day, they had free Pokemon starter decks, cards, and goodies to give out. They were able to explain how to play Pokémon TCG too. This is an excellent little boardgame store that's tucked in the crevices of Markham. For anyone living in downtown Toronto, this is a hard place to get to and I would say that's the only downfall. Other than that, there is a very impressive selection of boardgames to play with! As mentioned before, the store is pretty small. There's no 2nd floor or basement level but what it lacks in size makes up with quality of life. There are some snacks and drinks to keep your game up. Entry fee is $5 flat. Because retail space is small the room doesn't get loud at all. Most importantly, many of the boardgames are in tact meaning no sticky, ripped, or lopped-off game board pieces! I was looking for a nearby shop that sells boardgames near Downtown Markham and Wood For Sheep Hobbies came up on trusty Yelp :) It is a small shop in the commercial area that has an extensive selection of boardgames. You can buy, rent or play on the spot for a small fee. It is not a boardgames cafe but they do sell canned pop and bottled drinks on the side. I was looking for the Ticket to Ride series and I was able to purchase the original one in store :) Check out www.woodforsheep.ca for their in stock or out of stock list. If it is out of stock, simply email them to place an order. I placed an order for the original extensive pack and it arrived in a week or so. The boardgame prices are less expensive than in big-box stores and boardgame cafes. Stephen (one of the store owners) was very helpful, knowledgeable and patient. He has great recommendations for small and large groups of players. I admire that he can easily explain game rules in simple terms and give you an idea of what to expect during the game. What do you do when it is pouring outside? Go to Wood For Sheep to play some board games with your friends, of course! This shop is located in a VERY quiet plaza, away from the residential area. If I didn't know about this place from a friend, I wouldn't have come across it. The shop itself isn't very big. It has about 5-6 tables for 5-6 people. It is a good size. I love that they have all sorts of games and I love that they have different leagues going on! Dnd, Pokemon, etc... They have a variety of games for purchase too and the guy behind the counter on that day was really nice. I am not sure how long we are allowed to stay to play, but it is $5 (tax included) per person. It is very inexpensive and you get to play as many games as you like! And if you get thirsty and/or hungry, there are beverages and snacks for sell near the entrance! I'll definitely bring more friends next time! read more

I don't know how I haven't reviewed this place yet considering I've been coming here so religiously and recommending it to all my friends for the past year. I first found out about this place when I was browsing through Yelp because it was late at night and my friends wanted something to do. Ever since then, I have made this spot my go-to hang out place. I love that they have SUCH a large collection of board games and the owner is SO nice. The vibe of the shop is very relaxed and laid back and no one's there to cause trouble/create a ruckus. The $5 sitting fee is very reasonable and you're not forced to buy any additional drinks/snacks - it's not a cafe, it's purely a board game shop. I also really like that the owners are knowledgeable of the board games and are able to help teach you/recommend new games to you and your friends. Probably the best place to go to play board games, in my opinion. Went with a couple of friends and it was great! There was a large variety of board games, up to 5-6 book shelves! They had so much to offer from card games, to board games, to trivia! Now here's the best part, it's only $5.. now I don't believe there is an allotted time you are allowed to stay if the place isn't busy & to be able to play any board games for a long period of time for only $5 is crazy! I placed a special order for a board game that they didn't have in their online shop, the guys were cool enough to order it for me and priced it very well. Wood for sheep has become my go to online retailer because they offer a free pickup option at any of the local events they attend, and I like to save on shipping as much as possible! I see them all the time at events like GameOn! And TABScon. Hearing that they just opened their new Game Centre, I just had to stop by on a quiet weekday afternoon to check it out. The staff are super friendly and cool. They will help answer your questions and guide you to some games they think you'll enjoy based on your interests or playing style. The place isn't too large but spacious enough to host over two dozen players, local gamers now have a friendly place to meetup and play their favourite board games. The in-house library is stocked with all the popular modern titles from the big name designers, from Leacock to Rosenberg, Knitzia to Chvatil, Lang to Wallace, Kramer to Kiesling, Cathala to Faidutti, and Friese to Feld. I have purchased several times from the owners back when they would allow pick up from their homes. Strongly support independent entrepreneurs who let's their clients buy and enjoy board games without a giant markup. The store itself is in a very very quiet plaza off a street I wouldn't even normally turn on if I were not specifically coming to by the store. Ample parking since the plaza is so quiet, and very minimal decor inside. Not the best, cozy environment for hours of board games and only offer pop/chips for snacks.
