I've taken my Jetta in for mechanical (catalytic converter) and cosmetic repairs (vandalized windows), as well as check ups before every road trip I've taken in the past 18 months. The price has always been fair, I've never caught them trying to sell me anything I don't need (and I double check the prices online & with my buddy who's a mechanic in Dallas). These dudes rule! Super friendly, super accommodating. SUPER! Called the Wicker Park location to have my car towed and they were full so they had me go here instead. AAA came out and tested my battery and told me that wasn't the problem. So after bringing it here they told me it was, in fact, the battery. A quick jump and charge and the ol' hunk o' transport was back to running normally. They also did me the HUGE favor of bringing the car back to WP so I could pick it up before they closed. When I got there, they didn't even charge me for the battery charge, making me feel like a schmuck for them making the extra effort of them moving locations for me. At the end of the day they turned a crap-tastic situation of towing this thing all over town when all I needed was a jump...into a pretty painless experience. I should also mention that I've had other, pricier, fixes done by them in the past, as they came highly recommended by my boyfriend prior to that, that have gone extremely smoothly. They have always been totally knowledgable and extremely honest, especially to someone like myself, who doesn't have a clue about cars. But this experience really put them over the top with customer service. No longer will I let any other hands touch my car! read more

Jason Won is an honest mechanic. Reviewer Chris W. is correct. I had a very similar experience with Jason to the one Chris describes in his review. Normally, I just stop in Won's for an oil change and tire rotation; it's all I ever need. But my shocks and struts were making very weird noises, so I mustered my budgetary courage and went to see Jason expecting to replace something at a cost that would really hurt. He assured me it was the cold weather making it hard for rubber and steel to work together without making those awful noises. He also assured me there is no substitute product on the market for my car that would eliminate the issue, and not to worry about anything. . Jason Won has won me over. read more

My first experience wasn't that bad. Took it in to get my transmission flushed, tune up, fuel filter replaced and the service engine light, which the code showed a bad air injection. They took care of everything for me and just reset the service engine light claiming that it might have just tripped. Well I drove the car out of town for work, about 300 miles away. I found out I started smelling gas. It was coming from the fuel filter as it wasn't properly put back on. Ugh. So based on the good reviews here and their friendly attitude, I decided to give them another shot. This was for the same service engine light problem after it came back on after a week or so. I also needed an oil change. I dropped my car off early Monday and told them I need it by the end of the day. Didn't hear anything back by 5:30pm so I put in a call. They told me the code couldn't be pulled from his reader. So my car sat there all day when I could've actually taken it somewhere else. Oh and the oil was never changed that whole time. About the service engine light. I took it to auto-zone and they were able to pull a code in a less than 10 seconds. Their code readers are cheap too. So I feel Won's didn't want to service my vehicle because it would've been too hard for them to do and tried to cover up their laziness. As a mechanic, it's your job to fix something. If you can't pull a code on your machine, find another business that can possibly pull the code for you. Based on all the good reviews in the past, I believe things have changed over at Won's lately. read more

I went by the other day & got a price on break pads and rotors and they quoted me a price close to what I would pay at a dealership. Even Just Tires was less expensive by over a $100. Not only did he get that fixed up for me, but was also able to do a quick oil change (I was due for one anyway). $50 for synthetic, I usually pay around $85 at Jiffy Lube. I wanted to write a positive review to thank Jason at Won's for all of the good work! Bear with me, this is a long review.... Last week my "check engine" light came on in my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I took it to the dealership for a diagnosis and found out I needed a new hydraulic cooling fan for my engine and it was going to cost $1,350. I have an extended warranty thru a 3rd party but the dealership checked and said it wasn't covered. But now the warranty company knew I needed to fix the fan so if my car overheated, they weren't going to cover it "because there was the underlying problem of the fan". To make matters even worse, the part needed was on backorder and they had no idea how long it would take to get it. So pretty much I was screwed.... if I drove my Jeep with the bad fan and it overheated I wasn't going to be covered under warranty and I couldn't get the part to get it fixed. So I decided to call Won's and see what they could do. I knew nothing of them but the good Yelp reviews. Jason took a look at my car and was able to find the only hydraulic fan replacement in the state of Illinois! He had it delivered the next day and my Jeep was fixed in two days. He was even a little less in cost than the dealer (though I was just happy to find the part). He also checked out the rest of my engine and gave me his thoughts on the warranty. I will HIGHLY recommend Jason and Won's Auto Service. Don't be fooled by the small garage, this guy is great. read more

Won's Yelp profile inspired me to see why it got so many five-star reviews. I have been more than pleased to make Won's my go-to car repair shop. Ray -- the chief mechanic -- is personable, skilled, creative, and most of all, honest. Last time I went in, he examined the "Check Engine" light on my new car and turned it off, saying, "Is it possible you had trouble putting it in gear?" "Yes, I'm just learning to drive automatic." "Come back if it comes on again." It hasn't. No charge. He also offered me sausage pizza -- how cool is that! Recently I had a problem with the a/c on my old Suzuk X-90, a rare truck. Ray couldn't find the part, so I hunted it down on the Internet and sent it to him. He installed it for no charge and changed my oil for only $20. Love this place. read more

I've been using Won's for car maintenance since I became a car owner in 2012. I think Won's deserves a 5 star rating for their honesty. As a first time car owner, I definitely could have gotten screwed over by my general lack of knowledge in regards to car ownership - for example, I asked if the tires needed to be rotated on the first oil change. An unscrupulous garage owner could have taken my concern as a licence to perform the service and charge me for it, but Won's mechanics instead educated me on the likely lifetime of my tires and told me when I should expect to have to rotate the tires. Another example of honesty, one of my tires recently had a leak. I was unable to determine the source of the leak during my inspection, so I took it to Won's. They were able to locate a buried nail and my car had a five minute fix turn around time. Again, an unscrupulous garage could have taken advantage of that situation, me not being able to locate the source of the leak, and told me the tire was unfix-able, using the opportunity to up sell new tires. As a newbie car owner, having an honest mechanic is paramount and Won's has earned my loyal business. read more

I have been bringing my cars over to Won's Auto for over 10 years. I have owned a number of cars during this time, and at one time or another Jason has worked on all of them. If you are looking for a mechanic that tells it like it is, and charges way cheaper than a car dealer, then he's your guy. When I couldn't find a shop to rebuild the motor of my 1923 T-Bucket Hot Rod for anything less than an arm and a leg, I brought it to Jason and he did it for a fraction of the price. I live 20 miles west of the city and I still bring my cars over to his shop for maintenance or troubleshooting. I am glad that he is finally back in business cause it felt like I was cheating on him when I went to another shop to have my cars serviced. LOL read more

First time at this shop and I will from now on have my car service here only. I noticed my car was leaking oil and I could smell it through the vents. I called the shop right before they closed and they recommended for me to drop the car off and they would repair it as soon as possible. The next day William their tech/manager gave me a call explained what needed to be repaired, how long it would take and a price. He found other things that needed to be address but explained I could wait since the funds weren't available on my side. I have to say this place is amazing, their tech/manager is on point with everything he checked on my car. He knows what he's doing and explain it to the point I understand. One of my clients referred me to Ray at Won's Auto , after hearing me complain for a few weeks about my car problems . I hit a pot-hole thanksgiving night , and my wheel got pushed back ,went to the place my insurance recommended , on (Halsted and Roscoe ) Had a $2,000 Insurance bill , 3-weeks later , I pickup my car , had it for 2 days and a tire goes flat . , SO I bring it to my Dealer (Nissan ) . for peace of mind . they say I need 4 new tires and 4 new rotors . and all my fluids changes .. $1900 . and then next time I would need my belts changed ..yaeee merry Christmas :-((( I can't believe Gerber never told me how bad my rotors/tires were . SO Dec.24th I brought it to Ray , he lifted my car up and showed me what was wrong , and I only needed 2 tires / only front brakes/rotors . and also saw a cracked belt . SO taking care of my present problem and my future one !!:-))))) @1/4 of the price of my dealer . Made an appointment for Dec.26 . Dropped off am , was supposed to be ready the next day ,,, I get a call 5 hours later telling me my car is ready !!! It drove like a new car !!! I went in for a full synthetic oil change (using ELF Performance oil) and it only cost me $50! You only get Mobil 1 at Jiffy Lube for almost $85! Jason and Jordan are the best. They're the only autoshop that I trust in the city (and I've been to several). They can always get me in right away, they're super affordable and honest. I'm a blondie and feel like I always get screwed when I go into car shops, but I took my car into them for a second opinion after a friend had recommended them - they quoted me a few hundred dollars less than the body shop I was initially going to and trusting. I first rated back in 2011 and wanted to update based on 4 years of excellent service. This is hands down the best mechanic shop I've taken a car in the city - I've worked with Miles, Junior, and Ray and all are the most honest and friendly mechanics you can find. I can't recommend Won's Auto enough - they'll never take advantage, no upselling, and they're honest about when you can just add some oil or when you need to have the full overhaul done. I was really happy with my experience with Won's. I went there based on Yelpers reviews because I needed a basic oil change. Jason let me use their wireless internet while I was waiting. I ended up needing shocks in addition to the oil change. Jason showed me my car where my current shocks were leaking, and why they needed to be replaced. It was totally great to be shown proof of why something needs to be done. I waited like an hour more, and the shocks were replaced in addition to the oil change. I wasn't charged for the labor for the oil change, just the shocks and labor for the shocks. It was one of the cheapest car repairs I've had. I was thoroughly pleased with the customer service and price. What a nice change in Chicago!! Will definitely be bringing my Jetta here in the future... read more

Their $50 for a synthetic oil change beats everywhere I called in the city (and the price I pay in my native, dilapidated South Bend IN), they have fast WIFI in their lobby, and the guys who work here were sweethearts. I just wanted to spread the Won's Auto love around...I've been coming to Jason at Won's Auto since 2000. He was recommended by a coworker who had also been going there for years. I have never felt ripped off by Won's or had a mysterious malfunction immediately after visiting. One time I received a quote from another place and Jason informed me that they were going to charge me for the whole piece, when I just needed a bolt. Another time an unexpected work emergency occurred and I couldn't make it before close. Jason waited for me and this just shows what kind of hardworking and dedicated person he is.
