Unfortunately, our community contracted Knight Fencing Company to replace approximately 800 ft of…read morewood fencing last year. While the outward appearance of the job looked acceptable, we started experiencing issues with the stability of the fence that surrounded our detention pond. Several posts were leaning and loose. Knight came out and did add some more concrete, but this was not the only issue. The fence line was along a slope and the post holes were dug into the downward slope which was not very secure. Then a strong storm hit the Greer area and the winds were fierce. The next day, approx 350 feet of the fence laid in the detention pond. It was obvious from several of the fallen 6x6 posts that the holes were dug in the worse place, the holes were not approx 2 feet in the ground which was contracted and not enough concrete was poured in the post holes, if any. We found some post holes with zero concrete, a few with concrete on only one side of the posts and some concrete just on the higher level and not on the lower end of the post hole. A neighbor who watched the crew dig the post holes commented that they were using manual post hole diggers for this section of the fence and he was surprised since this area is fill of red clay. I personally witnessed them use a high powered post hole auger when they first started the project, but not at the end. Maybe they were tired and to worn out by then. Granted, the wind from the storm was strong, but given the poor workmanship of planting the post holes at least 2' deep and the definite lack of supporting material, the weight of the fence would never have held over time. After several attempts, we got the owner out who inspected his crews work and while admitting (recorded) that the crew did not sink the posts deep enough and did not add enough concrete, he would be glad to come back out and fix his crews lack of proper workmanship, for $7,000.00. To our surprise, we felt that he would have offered to repair the fence at an approved and proper level of good workmanship. And why would we have to pay them more to come back and fix their shoddy work? We gave the owner every chance to make good, but he took the low road. Yes, we did seek legal council and a letter was sent to the owner by our attorney. The owner did call the attorney back and I won't repeat what his response was, but he did state that we were welcome to see him to court. At this time, we are still looking at moving forward to taking them to the Magistrate court with pictures and audio recordings. Of course, at this point, why would we want him back in the community? We did have other work lined up for them, but that opportunity is gone.
