Easy takeaway. Ask for extra spice as sometimes the food is pretty mild.

This is a bit of a gem, looks like it was an ordinary shop in a past life. The feel was fresh, contemporary and a bit beachy without being cliché. The food was amazing! Fresh light, tasty, decidedly Thai, but lighter, fresher with fantastic presentation. Cold rolls superb, crisp pork belly diced with bok Choy, minced chicken Ko pal with green beans.....delish.

Good thing we were in before the rush hour dinner service otherwise we wouldn't have gotten a table, we kept seeing groups after groups being turned away because it was all booked out. We were even given a strict hour to eat and then the host gave us a bill straight away on the table to usher us out. Fair enough. Food was pretty good. There is a wide selection of beers, in particular South East Asian beers which was nice. I got the rice paper wraps for entree which was a refreshing mouthful of coriander, mint, veg and your usual thai ingredients. Don't get it if you're not a fan of coriander as it gets a bit heavy. For mains, I got the chicken salad dish. It was absolutely heaven. There was a generous serving of very tender chicken breast that was beautifully marinated with a lovely thai sauce. If I could order the same dish three times over I would in a heartbeat. Overall, would definitely return, but would book in advance! Protip #2: This place is dog friendly too, there was a cute pup lounging outside with a bowl of water while its owners dined inside.

Five star food, three star service…read more First, great food! We started by splitting the special stuffed Thai chicken wings... er, single wing. It was large and delicious. Nice texture and sauce. For mains I had the four spice fish (a house special) which was lovely! Crispy fish tossed in a really aromatic coconut sauce with vegetables. A bit of spice but nothing overdone. It didn't seem like any particular Thai dish I've had before but it did scream Thai flavours. Divine! My partner had the chili stir fry with chicken. Another knockout dish, this was perfectly cooked and had the right amount of chili. He loved it and I tried and it was definitely nice. We finished our rice by pouring it into our bowls to eat every drop of sauce. Great! Service was odd; they were genuine but seemed overwhelmed by their own jobs. The food made up for it but they need a good FOH manager to tighten things up. Ambience was nice :) Not cheap, but good!

A nice range of wines to choose from while you wait for your food to be served. A very non-Thai style of layout, but a good amount of service was provided. Small in restaurant space, it can be really noisy when its a full room and everyone is talking. There is restroom facility onsite, but its quite a bit of a walk, and involves going outside, so be aware of that if you go during some cooler or wet-weather days. Unfortunately, the tables are rather small, and they have a bit of a full table with 'decor'. We were a table of two and found it a little difficult to have main plates and personal plates on the same table without the near miss (or two) of tipped over plates, but we managed to make it work in the end.

A tiny shop in the corner of the West Lakes Shopping Centre food court, I wondered how this Spices…read morecompares to its Rundle St counterpart. Their bain maire food looked quite good, especially the plump garlic prawns, but the prices put me off - $11.50 for rice and one dish to $13.50 for rice and three dishes. So instead I went for a small Pud Thai, liking the look of the 'fresh wok fried' promise. I paid my $8.90 and took some photos of the shop so I could review it. As I was snapping at the sushi cabinet at the side, a small, rotund Asian woman from inside the small shop (a manager by her body language) demanded "What are you doing? Why are you taking photos? You can't take photos. No photos!" I tried to explain that I'm a reviewer. "A what?" I tried to explain what a reviewer does, but all she responded with was "So you from centre management?" I said I wasn't. She told me to wait, and disappeared into the kitchen. Thankfully my Pud Thai appeared just then (under the name of "John" because apparently "Jo" was problematic), and so I grabbed my little bucket and left. Oh dear, now I'm afraid of using the photos... (Really, what nefarious purposes could I use them for?) Well, had my run in with the little woman not been so unpleasant, I would have quite enjoyed my lunch, even though they didn't manage to get it all in the bucket and instead plenty on the sides. No matter, I didn't manage to get all of it in my mouth - but hey, that's what serviettes are for. It was a very passable Pud Thai, and quite generous with the chicken and prawns, with plenty of capsicum, onion and bok choy. Definitely one of the cheaper options from this food court. Pity, because there's no way I'm going back there.

To be honest I always feel like I'm being judged when I go there. The few times I've tried hot meals from Spices it just hasn't been very good. The first time was cold and dry. For some reason I thought I'd give them the benefit of the doubt and try their food another day. Again, it was not that nice. Hard, chewy, very mediocre. On that note, the sushi is alright. Nothing special, but if you're looking for cheap sushi then I'd come to Spices. Again, not my favourite sushi at West Lakes, but it'll do. I'd recommend heading a few doors down to Charlie Chan though.

I wanted this to be better but really it was just okay…read more Located in a little house like building, the menu here is split into Thai and Vietnamese dishes. There are some great choices on the menu and at very reasonable prices - though these have gone up since the other reviews were posted, the average price was around $14.50 and not the $9 mentioned by others.... All the food was really good with decent serving sizes and the staff were really helpful but I honestly can not justify more than a 3 star rating when our dishes all came out over the space of 10 minutes. The kitchen should be capable of coordinating it so that when there is a table of 8 people there is not an excessive wait between dishes. That's just my two cents.

The…read morefacade's lack of appeal stopped me trying the food for many years, despite living in the neighbourhood for sometime. In fact, I don't think I even noticed it was there for the longest time... lucky for me some foodie friends reccommended we get take away from Viet-Thai the other night much to the groups chagrin. We had a large group and were sharing, so I got to try quite a broad range of dishes. Even a spring roll, which I would just about never order for myself but they were huge and tasty! You could actually taste the filling... which is rare, as I tend to think of them as crispy deep fried empty calories. All of the food was fresh and flavoursome! In fact I'm in a rush to go back again it was so good and the prices were really affordable, I think the most expensive dish is a seafood one at $13.90!! Standard pork, chicken and beef dishes are just $9 (bargain basement for a city slicker like me). Real standouts were the prawn dishes, the prawns were large and perfectly cooked, popping perfectly in the mouth. Goong Choo Chee (prawns w/ curry and coconut milk) was part way between a wet and dry dish andparticularly impressive.

I had high hopes for this little Chinese take away. I was disappointed…read more They advertise free delivery for within 5km, so out of curiosity (and my usual cheapness) I checked the distance on Google maps. 4.3km. Sweet, we're in. I called up to place our order, then received only a "Thank you, goodbye" in response. No, "So you ordered...." or "So that comes to..." I was a little worried. Half an hour later when the food showed up, we were charged $5 extra than I had calculated. Apparently, we weren't in their approved 5km radius. I get annoyed at stuff like this, especially when I'm hungry and could have got an extra special fried rice with that fiver! But what can you do? I don't think calling up again would achieve anything. So we ate our pad thai and combination chop suey with large special fried rice. The chop suey was tasty enough, but nothing special, and the rice didn't have a lot of flavour (or many ingredients to make it 'special'). The pad thai had melded into clumps, and had little flavour except for spice. What I love most in a good pad thai is its peanut flavour, but there was little here. Overall, a disappointment. We'll have to keep looking for a local favourite take-away.
