A small and friendly Austrian themed restaurant, with generous portions. There are chairs and…read moretables outside, though the inside is a little cramped. I first ate here in 2011, and the food and experience is essentially the same! The food is good value, and there are a few veggie options, although it is predominantly meat-based (pork and veal especially, of course, in the form of schnitzel). My most memorable item was a starter of Styrian Bean Salad (like very large red borlotti beans), which sounds a little weird but was in fact stunningly delicious. I had it the second time and it was still as good 13 years later. On my first visit I had the Vorarlberg cheese noodles - tasty, but extremely filling, and the second time the Vegetarian Aubergine (eggplant) schnitzel. The latter worked surprisingly well, and went nicely with the salad. Staff are efficient and characterful - ours was outgoing, engaging and very funny, so treat the service as part of the entertainment (I think the other waiter was a little quieter)! A couple of courses (you won't need any more) and a beer or glass of wine will set you back around €35-45, including service.

Cute little café with lots of sidewalk space, spanning well beyond the storefront. A good array of…read moreAustrian food and some nice Austrian wines by the glass to go with it. While the main dishes were a decent portion, the dessert was HUGE! Die Südtiroler Spinatknödel: Kinda like two huge gnocchi in a nice cheesy creamy sauce. The knödels themselves were a nice mix of spinach, cheese and carbs. Though it looked like just two wouldn't be that filling, it turned out to be the perfect portion. Das Wiener Schnitzel v. Vollmilchkalb: Simple veal schnitzel. Thin, crispy, flavorful. Der Kaiserschmarrn mit Zwetschkenröster: An extremely filling dessert that the server recommended we share. Though for two people, it still might be too much. Took awhile and arrived warm, so I'm assuming they made it to order. Pretty thick chunks of pancakes. Paired great with the plum sauce and vanilla ice cream, though seems like there was a lot more pancake that toppings.

Dicke Wirtin was one of my favorite traditional German meals in Berlin and a restaurant I'd…read morerecommend without hesitation to anyone wanting an authentic local dining experience. We ordered the schnitzel and the bratwurst, which came with cabbage and potato salad, and paired everything with a Berliner Kindl and a Pilsner. The schnitzel was fantastic--crispy, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor--while the bratwurst was equally delicious. The cabbage and potato salad complemented the sausage beautifully, and I found myself piling both onto my schnitzel because they were that good! The true star of the evening, however, was the apple strudel. Freshly made, perfectly sweet, and easily the best apple strudel I had in Berlin. We had a reservation, which I'd recommend since the restaurant filled up quickly during dinner service. The service was fast, friendly, and the staff spoke excellent English, making the experience easy and welcoming for visitors. Since it was a warm evening, we chose the outdoor seating, which made for a lovely dinner, though the indoor dining room has the cozy charm of a traditional German pub. If you're looking for hearty, authentic German food done right, Dicke Wirtin is an absolute must-visit.
