On the air since 1977, they play an incredibly wide range of music, with a special focus on local artists. Every day from 5-9 pm they give away tickets for shows at local venues, which is a great opportunity to explore Chapel Hill's music scene. As far as programming goes, I love the Thursday Night Feature, where the DJ picks a theme and then chooses the songs that fit that theme (e.g., 3 hours of songs about rainbows, or whatever). The only downside to WXYC is that with that much focus on diverse programming and music, there are certain times of day that they just don't play any songs I like. Nine times out of ten I like what I hear, but then again I've also flipped over when they were playing what sounded like 15 straight minutes of windchimes.

I can deal with a little rap, but it got to be just RAP and nothing else in between. The only reason why I gave this station an extra star is because they sound better than 106.9 and 107.7. if you are paying attention to them. HINT: Play more danceable songs, especially during the day and leave the slow jams for your late night schedule. Mix some more 80s and 90 jams with your current play list.

This is not a review of this radio station's programming. I don't think Yelp is the place for that…read more I am reviewing the office and Chapel Hill studio. I am a pledge drive volunteer and have visited this location near the Friday Center in Chapel Hill several times. There is ample parking but be sure you don't take a reserved space at the day care center next door. Signage lets you know where the front door is and where the volunteer entrance is. Staff is usually very polite and helpful. Years ago, I helped coordinate a radio interview here and now I know they split the space between studios in Chapel Hill and Durham. If you support public radio, consider volunteering.
