My wife and I enjoy the variety and freshness of the music offered by a college radio station. As we are in our late 50's it is great to listen to new artists with a fresh take on all genre's. The WKNC format rocks. Something for everyone. Well done kids. ; -) read more

WKNC 88.1 FM The Revolution is a remarkably professional college radio station. It's like a satellite radio station tailored to alternative and hip tunes in a variety of genres, except sometimes during the day there's even a real person putting together the music for you! I'm a bit turned off by the commercial-radio-sounding tags between songs, and the block programming can be frustrating (if you hear a song you don't like, don't even bother coming back for an hour because it will all sound like that), especially because some of their blocks are of over-represented or overly similar-sounding genres (post-rock block anybody? anybody?) that do not need such extended airplay and, if anything, come off as lazy and redundant. But WKNC 88.1 FM The Revolution does have a fantastically extended broadcasting range, and sometimes when I lose the signal for both 102.1 and 89.3, it's a safe bet for a variety of music that I will not hear on commercial radio stations that is reliably current and sometimes interesting. More recently, I have been hearing more hip-hop on this station, both in blocks and not, and it is refreshing to hear hip-hop still on college radio. Also, Friday nights there is the Convict Rock block, featuring heavy metal (some of which is way too macho-bravado-guitar-smash-ROCK666 for my tastes, but really there is everything from Slayer to Sunn O))) so it's worth giving it a listen if you're looking for a loud weekend radio show) requested by local inmates. Hearing their letters read on air definitely freaks me out some of the time, but it's also a really interesting, unique show unrivaled by anything else in the Triangle. In general, I'm not weirded out by the 'obscure' aspect of other college radio stations, but if you are the kind of listener who wants familiar sounds from unfamiliar artists as you're driving, with a much reduced risk of both commercials AND chainsaws coming through your airwaves (which makes a lot of sense, now that I'm looking at this), then I would definitely recommend putting this station on your pre-set. -JJ read more

College radio usually means random obscure music... not NC State's WKNC! Definitely the best radio around. Not much commercials, and mostly popular indie music. I listen to it over UNC's radio (WXYC) which plays pretty obscure music half the time. Obscure music is nice and all... but not when you're sitting in traffic. I also listen enough to know some of the shows... my favorite is one called "Dance Dance Revolution" which plays indie pop/dance music. There's also an Americana set... I think maybe Saturday or Sunday mornings. Rap is always on Monday nights... I'm NOT a fan of the metal on Friday nights. All this schedule might change around as students come and go, but it gives you an idea of how the station is laid out. It's awesome. read more

I think my favorite thing about WKNC might be the occasional awkward studio conversations between the DJs. Now, the conversations themselves aren't awkward, but you feel a little awkward listening to them on the radio because it's so unusual. Now and then the jockeys will just start up a random conversation with one another about the things college kids enjoy (the internet or video games or some such thing) and it's just great to listen in. It's completely unprofessional, raw, and unfinished - just the way I like my radio. Oh yeah, and the music's not bad either. I'm not a big fan of the techno and house shows, but classics like Shut the Punk Up, the Hippie Hour, and Local Lunch are truly endearing favorites. On those days when you feel like radio in the Triangle is hopless; that it just can't be saved...just tune your dial to 88.1, turn up the volume, and remember what radio was meant to be. read more

As a UNC alumna and Chapel Hill resident, I know that my loyalty is supposed to lie with WXYC (89.3), but I can't get enough of WKNC. While I do like UNC's radio station, sometimes the music is just a little too obscure for me. WKNC plays a really good mix of what I would consider popular (and emerging) indie music. As far as shows go, I love the Local Lunch on weekdays and I also find that they play a lot of the music I love most between the hours of 3 and 5 pm on Fridays. They often have bands in the studio on Friday afternoons, as well. As Eric said, WKNC is really big on publicizing local events. Presumably because they're a student radio station, they don't have to run 20 minutes of commercials for every hour. So not only do you get to hear more good music, but when it is time for a break in the music, they usually just make announcements about local events. read more

Love this station, I'm from Charlotte, pretty home sick. This radio station is one of the very few things that make Raleigh not so terrible to live in. There's nothing like this back home. I love the ticket give a ways, I've won quite a few of them. It gives my husband and I a date night without the kiddos! Great music! Not much I'd change, except the occasional sports cast. Still even with that, 5 stars! Keep up the good work! read more

This and NPR are the only stations I listen to around here. Absolutely fantastic variety on this station.

I don't have enough good words for this station. I enjoy many of their shows and especially love Local Lunch and Friday mornings. It's fun to hear some of the djs' banter and a nice change from commercial radio. The ads are funny and clever. Who can't appreciate a little Elmo going nuts for Shut the Punk Up? This is the only station I can listen to here. It's a great mix of everything. No garbage. The DJ's are very informative and it playlists are fun for long commutes. I can even get in to the weekend mixes. read more

Used to be hard rock... now mostly indie. Love Saturday mornings... Mystery Roach is always interesting. Post-Rock Block sort of sneaks down my spine before I realize it. read more
