This is not a review of this radio station's programming. I don't think Yelp is the place for that. I am reviewing the office and Chapel Hill studio. I am a pledge drive volunteer and have visited this location near the Friday Center in Chapel Hill several times. There is ample parking but be sure you don't take a reserved space at the day care center next door. Signage lets you know where the front door is and where the volunteer entrance is. Staff is usually very polite and helpful. Years ago, I helped coordinate a radio interview here and now I know they split the space between studios in Chapel Hill and Durham. If you support public radio, consider volunteering. read more

On the air since 1977, they play an incredibly wide range of music, with a special focus on local artists. Every day from 5-9 pm they give away tickets for shows at local venues, which is a great opportunity to explore Chapel Hill's music scene. As far as programming goes, I love the Thursday Night Feature, where the DJ picks a theme and then chooses the songs that fit that theme (e.g., 3 hours of songs about rainbows, or whatever). The only downside to WXYC is that with that much focus on diverse programming and music, there are certain times of day that they just don't play any songs I like. Nine times out of ten I like what I hear, but then again I've also flipped over when they were playing what sounded like 15 straight minutes of windchimes.

For example, I was reading an article about a Dr. Thomas LeGrow who works with patients with spinal issues at Durham Regional Spine Center uses a Zero Gravity decompression table to not only relieve, but heal the pain of varying spinal issues. I thought of a relative who might qualify for this type of procedure in lieu of surgery. There are several other articles ranging from preventative health to maintaining excellent oral hygiene. There are 40,000 plus copies of the paper distributed in medical offices, major shopping areas, libraries, bookstores and health food stores to mention a few. So pick up one and keep healthy!
