I've visited the Wiveton Bell twice. The first time was with friends to have dinner, the restaurant was full and we had a great time, enjoying the food and most of all the wine.
The second time was yesterday and this time for my fathers birthday with all his grandchildren, the restaurant was far from full. When we booked the table we made clear that there would be four small children with our party. We were told that wouldn't be a problem.
The staff certainly weren't unfriendly, but they didn't really know how to cope with small children and the restaurant gave the impression that it really wanted to be cooler than families with children. A fine attitude when you are full, but not when you are no where near.
Clues to this impression came from the children's menu, which was titled Young Adults, and the price for children's main courses was £6 or £7 for very unspecial food. The kitchen was too cool to have ketchup for the hand cut chips they supplied to the children, instead they had tomato relish that 4 and 5 year olds weren't hugely keen on.
The adult meals were ok. My Slow Roast Briston Pork Belly was delicious, but so it should be at £12.95. You then have to buy all your vegetables separately.
For 5 adults, 3 children and a baby, the bill came to £150. Everyone was drinking soft drinks as we were driving, except for one glass of wine and a pint of beer. To me that is expensive.
One last comment, watch out for the loos, which quite frankly were disgusting and clearly not checked regularly by the staff. read more
