I have to confess that I like graveyards and this particular one looks so impressive for the motorway (M6) that i couldn't resist visiting it. Firstly I have research about Witton and found out that this huge cemetery opened in 1863 and it's actually the largest one in Birmingham with an area that covers 103 acres!
For its size it's also quite impressive how this place is conserved and the tombs are almost all intact even with some of them being exposed to the elements for so long years.
Some other interesting facts about Witton:
* There are 459 First World Wars burials
* Maps of the site is available in the cemetery office
* It's part of some popular Walking routes in Birmingham
The Witton Cemetery is open on weekdays from 8.30 am to 4.00 pm ( except in May, June, July, August and September when it is open until 4.30 pm) and weekends from 10 am to 5 pm ( expect in January and December when it is only open until 4 pm). read more
