Firstly I have research about Witton and found out that this huge cemetery opened in 1863 and it's actually the largest one in Birmingham with an area that covers 103 acres! For its size it's also quite impressive how this place is conserved and the tombs are almost all intact even with some of them being exposed to the elements for so long years. Some other interesting facts about Witton: * There are 459 First World Wars burials * Maps of the site is available in the cemetery office * It's part of some popular Walking routes in Birmingham The Witton Cemetery is open on weekdays from 8.30 am to 4.00 pm ( except in May, June, July, August and September when it is open until 4.30 pm) and weekends from 10 am to 5 pm ( expect in January and December when it is only open until 4 pm).

It's a beautiful setting, and of course very peaceful as you would expect! There's an array of interesting head stones if you're into that kind of thing but otherwise it is a stunning capsule of serenity all in its own right; with gnarly old trees and other flora to enjoy. The changing seasons mean this is a great place to visit throughout the year.

It's a trip down memory lane as I learnt to drive (again - passed my test when I was 17, then didn't drive again for over 10 years..) here. Well, re-acquainted myself with driving, then, shall we say. Which kind of gives you an idea as to the size of this place - it's massive. There's plenty of space for pathways and driveways. With a 5 mph speed limit, I hasten to add. It's divided into a number of plots, and there are acres and acres of grass. It's a lovely place though. I know its full of dead people, but it's like acres of quiet parkland, with plots of ornamental gravestones and flowers here and there. I think I'd quite like to be buried here - it's really peaceful and ordered.

This cemetery has provided me with some much needed moments of solitude and reflection over the…read moreyears. It the main it is a very quiet place as lots of the graves are extremely old. It is a large site and you can easily pass an hour wandering around. I don't find it morbid spending time in graveyards, for some reason I find it very peaceful. I have personal connections to the space and like to visit from time to time to remember lost loved ones. However, a visit doesn't have to have this purpose to be enjoyable.
