I wanted to see some of the historical sites in Salem during our visit and this was certainly one of them. A bit of a trek from downtown Salem, it was worth it to be able to see it first hand. They've done a nice job marking the site with a memorial to the victims. How truly sad.

Today, returning from Logan Airport, I took a small side trip and visited one commemorative site that has always intrigued me. I am obsessed with history and absolutely believe that the past is a prologue because we still haven't managed to learn from our mistakes. I went to Danvers MA, near Route 128, and within this amazingly historical town, surrounded by meticulously preserved 17th and 18th century homes, with the aroma of fresh spring flowers, honeysuckle, and roses, lies the commemorative monument to the Witch Trials of 1692. For most of us. the Salem Witch trials (it happened in Danvers - old Salem Village, not the town of Salem, by the way) are but a distant footnote. A Halloween fable. An interesting and even humorous tale about witches and goblins and curses. When in fact, this monument marks a huge black eye in our history. When otherwise good people succumbed to panic and ideology, and committed unspeakable atrocities. 200 people accused. 150 people arrested and thrown in a dungeon. 19 people hanged. One tortured to death by being slowly pressed to death between two boulders. Even when the entire farce was over and the entire world knew that it was a grievous mistake, it was too embarrassing to acknowledge the error and five people remained in a dungeon until they died, forgotten by the world. Just because of the bad publicity it would generate. That's what happens when religion and government become tied in a symbiotic relationship of mutual support. Truth becomes subordinate to ideology disguised as faith. And somehow, for the ministers adjudicating the accusations, it was all directly tied to Scripture. We should all learn from this unfortunate event.

One of my very favorite museums, the PEM is so much more than just art; it is rich with history,…read moreculture, and storytelling. Salem was once a center of global trade and wealth; ship captains brought rare treasures and curiosities back from their voyages to the East India Marine Society, a precursor to the PEM. The modern PEM maintains this tradition of curiosity. Instead of just hanging famous paintings on a wall, the museum curates its galleries as capsules of interconnected history and events. The curators do an excellent job of creating cohesive exhibits that seamlessly follow the narrative of a specific time, place, or concept. This approach gives the individual pieces so much more meaning and context. On top of this, they consistently rotate galleries with special exhibits, so there is always something new to explore. Some of the big highlights: The Salem Witch Trials exhibit features authentic objects and firsthand accounts from the tragedy. Meanwhile, Salem Stories highlights the city's broader historical significance. Anila Quayyum Agha's amazing giant cubic hanging lantern projects an intricate light pattern across an entire room. Explore the newly redone East India Marine Hall, which displays some of the earliest objects collected by Salem sea captains. Finally, don't miss the Yin Yu Tang house - an entire, 200-year-old Qing Dynasty home transported from China and meticulously rebuilt inside the museum.

A lovely museum with the right volume and diversity of things and experiences! I loved how there…read morewas art, artifacts, furniture, and small bits of information you could walk away with. The trouble with museums is that the amount of information can be overwhelming, that you skip over the signs because there are too many. There are plenty of items to look at here, but it didn't feel too overwhelming to get a feel within a few hours. Make sure to book your tickets online to get a time for the Chinese house. I've never walked in something so old. It was interesting to see the construction and walk through it.
