I am about 10 years too young to have watched Bewitched when it was released, but oh my did I watch the reruns. We took a tour of Salem and this was a popular stop. The tour guide said the town was not initially receptive to the show being based/filmed in Salem because they thought it was disrespectful to the tragedy of the witch trials. It turns out Bewitched helped revitalize Salem and locals became much more accepting. Elizabeth Montgomery visited the town and our tour guide said the little girls in Salem were all trying to wiggle their nose like her. The statue is easy to find and a very cute addition to the downtown area. read more

Checking out the Bewitched Statue is a must when visiting Salem! It's a 6 foot statue of Elizabeth Montgomery aka Samantha that pays tribute to the very well-known TV show from the 1960's. Several episodes were filmed in Salem during it's 8 season run. The statue has been around for 20 years! It's smack dab in the middle of one of the more busy streets so it's not hard to miss...usually it's surrounded by people waiting in line to take photos with it though. Our first stop was to take a photo of this statue that if you remember back in the day they had this television show where she was a witch and living a normal life in the suburbs. She was amazingly beautiful and even this statue does a really good job on how I remember what she looked like before. Salem has a lot of history and is famous for the witch trials in 1692. Located in Lappin Park in Salem, Massachusetts. This Bewitched statue is the most visited attraction in Salam. It was unveiled on June 15, 2005 and pays tribute to the beloved show, staring Elzabeth Montgomery, as Samantha Stevens, sitting on a broom with a crescent moon behind her. During the 7th season, in 1970, Bewitched did film a few episodes in Salam, known as the "Salem Saga" and featured several landmarks of the city (which include The Witch House, The House of the Seven Gables and Hawthorne Blvd). There was a studio fire that occurred on the set when they filmed in Hollywood so they decided it would be fitting to film here in this town. The story brought Samantha Stevens to Salam for a witches' convention (in which her husband, Darrin and her mother, Endora also tagged along for the episodes). On a raining Monday, my husband, our little girl dog and I decided to make the drive to Salam from Boston. One of the things I wanted to make sure that we visited was this beautiful statue. Although the statue itself has been rather a controversial argument with the people of the town, it was still nice to see how well crafted this statue is, with all of its detail (although I don't recall that Samantha Stevens even rode a broom in the show... did she?). If you are fan of the show (aired from 1964- 1972), you should make a visit here if you are visiting the nearby area. If there is a crowd of people, it will dissipate quickly and then you'll be able to get a few photos if you wish. There is street parking (metered) nearby the area, so it should be easy to find this statue and walk over. read more

I love this statue, so very much like 'Samantha', and I appreciate how the character and the episodes that brought her to Salem helped reshape the public's perceptions. The statue, its base and platform are very nicely done and located appropriately. While there, I discovered that Salem is much more than witch trials, it has a long history of Seafaring, a replica full-size ship named 'Friendship', a Maritime Museum and the lovely Peabody Art Museum, a beautiful and expansive Commons, the Hawthorne Hotel, lovely B+b's, many beautiful historic homes and a great variety of shoppes and eateries. The town is very walkable and charming. I recommend visiting Salem, and other towns in its surrounding vicinity. read more

This monument is one of those sad feeling mixed with and "okay" I may get it feeling. So the Bewitched Statue, such a beloved television show and with the simple twinkle of the nose the Witch could do all sorts of things. It's like an American Icon. Location? Very poorly chosen. After taking a tour, it was made very well known that where the statue sits, was actually a route taken for the "witches" to be dragged down the road (after stopping by the church of course) to go up on the hill to be hanged. So the statue itself was pretty cool, just a typical statue for an American tv show. But the location was poorly chosen given the history of the spot and where the spot was on the final "walk" to the hanging grounds. I do believe many of the locals do not care for this statue at this location, but I could be wrong. Either way I recommend if your in the area, go and check it out and see what you think for yourself! read more

I didn't take my picture with Samantha because we were in a hurry to get to to our AirBnB reservations buy I sure did love Elizabeth Montgonery & never missed an episode of Bewitched. The statue pays tribute to the well-known TV sitcom 'Bewitched' and its filming of the seventh season there in Salem. Well it is the season and I'm going back to some of those reviews that I failed to post a couple years ago when I was otherwise occupied. Now for some interesting notes on this cool tribute. There were lots of people that claimed the statue trivialized the witch trials.  Some of those protesters claimed it was a tacky tribute.  Apparently some of those folks had not actually ben to Salem because there's no shortage of tacky witch stuff all over the place although it was mostly Salem residents who protested. The good news is that modern dat witches, all over, were string supporters.   You say tacky? During the Halloween season, as well most of them all year long, you can go to a haunted house, buy a shirt with a tacky phrase or get your photo taken with a ghost, goblin or yes a witch just steps away from the burial ground where a memorial stands to the victims of the witch hunt. There's a store that has been in Salem for some time that does psychic readings.  What's the name of the store you might ask?  Bewitched In Salem. Say again! Finally we had a very traumatic experience, on my very first visit to Salem, when we first visited the Salem Witch Museum in 1978. My wife was 7 most. pregnant with our #1 son (it's his birthday today) and the guide sent us up a closed stairway that was under construction by mistake. My sweetheart slipped on a large loose lying bolt and broke her leg & ankle in four places, it was really awful. She still has the screws in her tibia, to this day. So, we have some interesting history with Salem over our visits there and besides that first disaster we have always enjoyed our time spent in this lovely city. Bottom line: Make sure and visit Samantha when in Salem! read more

This statue is pretty representative of the quirkiness that makes Salem such an interesting place. Salem's history is split between maritime, and of course the witch trials which it is so famous for. Not a whole lot of witchy history survives from that era, though Salem makes up for it with lots of interesting shops, restaurants, and other attractions that are all somehow fit together. Why is all this relevant... well, arguable the statue is dedicated to a fictional witch from an at least fairly popular sitcom. On the one hand, Salem is the witch city, on the other, the statue has no other connection to history. It would be out of place, but the general quirkiness of Salem makes it fit, because, why not? If you're a local, you probably walk by it and don't even notice too much, if you're a tourist, it is likely worth it at least for a photo stop. Maybe kind of like Times Square, only I don't think locals avoid this like some New Yorkers avoid Times Square. read more

I wholly disagree with Damien here. Yes, Salem is in many ways a cheesy and tacky glorification of what should be a horrid and somber time in history. But it is also an empowering example of how a community took its dark history, embraced it and used it to bring strength and life to its doors. This empowerment is the whole reason anybody really goes to Salem in a touristy way. Also, who doesn't like Bewitched? In addition to being on the of the best shows of its time, it was also an early pioneer for women's rights with strong and independent female characters as well as being one of if not the first pop culture icons that showed witches in magic in a positive light. Plus. It's a statue. It does statue things flawlessly. read more

We were recently in the area over the weekend to check out some different attractions, We had hoped to park and get a closer look. It was cold out and the parking in that area was full with no empty spots nearby. In an area with a history of witchcraft I thought it was cool to have a positive instead of somber memory of witches. Unfortunately, our view was fleeting, as the traffic and gawkers made it nearly impossible to find a place to park and give this display the attention it deserves. If you didn't know, Bewitched actually filmed an episode in Salem, and its star, Elizabeth Montgomery, was cast in bronze to document this historic event. It's not the high point of a visit to Salem, but it does tie the town to many of us who watched the show. read more
