What a let down...Just not worth the money. I was beyond excited to stay at a resort because you really think it's going to be something special. We got the "King Luxury Suite" for $239+ a night but they forgot the luxury. The description of the King Luxury Suite really made it seem like something special however I'm pretty sure we were just in the regular King Suite-no luxury. Our room did not have the iHome as the description said. It also did not have a view of anything. The description said something about "in the tower section overlooking the golf course or resort". We were only on the 3rd floor so we towered over nothing but the roof of the entrance-see my attached picture of our "fancy" view. If I were to stay here again, it'd only be a one night thing because I had to and I'd get the cheapest room because there is nothing luxury about anything else. We didn't spend anytime at the hotel because there was just nothing great about it. read more

For a mid-Atlantic resort Wisp maintains an average spectrum of ski terrain with multiple lifts to access from the base as well as parking and slope access from the peak of the mountain. Wisp Resort Hotel has 168 rooms on site which is connected to the resort lodge providing great convenience for guest access to ski rental operations, food outlets, and bars. If you want to avoid rental wait times look into pre-booking through the Wisp call center, it is rumored that there may also be online reservations coming in the near future for the resort which should alleviate the common complaint of long waits on weekends and holidays. The '13/14 ski season looks promising as there has been lots of construction activity throughout the fall around the resort as it appears new ownership is investing in much needed repairs and expansion of ski terrain to help improved guest experience. Wisp continues to expand its summer amusement offerings with two 18-hole golf courses, mountain coaster, canopy tours/zip lines, Segway tours, summer chairlift rides, and downhill mountain biking. I love this place. I snowboard and I come here once a year sometimes two. Wish I could go more often. So many different trails if you ski or board. They also have a tubing park, a luge coaster (is that how you spell it?) and you can go snowmobiling. I've only been here during the winter. There's a huge lodge cafeteria to eat and drink while taking a break from the slopes not to mention the two bars that serve awesome drinks and their friendly staff. There's also a really nice cabin like restaurant off of one of the bars. I've eaten in the restaurant once but remember their soups being really yummy. Oh yeah they also make their own snow!! If you are coming to try skiing, just buy the 1 day pass. For someone that is good (or has no fear) the mountain is probably awesome but, I don't have any experience and after the first day, didn't want to use the second day pass. I called the main number and asked if I could exchange it for a snow tubing pass first thing the next morning and they said they wouldn't do it. It was a complete waste of money for me. This place had no customer service and only cares about making a dollar. There are exceptions to every rule, in my opinion, and I wasn't asking for a refund, simply to uses that money towards another one of the activities that was offered. read more

The mountain is OK. Lifts are dated and slow, trails are fine, nothing special. But the real showstopper here is the low employee morale. The employees are so surly and provide such terrible service, you'd think you were being punked. This is the case from the hotel, to DCs restaurant, to the lift operators who don't bother to stop or slow the lift when someone tumbles off it (one guy was even stretched out on two lawn chairs outside of the lift operator housing SLEEPING in the sun, amazing!). Most frustrating is the fact that the employees will tell you anything to get them off their back, and most of the time whatever they told you does not turn out to be true. They do allow pets, which is very convenient, but there are a lot of catches. If your dog barks AT ALL, they will call and leave a threatening message, saying that if they have to refund anyone's room because of your dog's barking, they will automatically charge it to the card on file (All the pet rooms are on the same floor and located next to each other, so sometimes the dogs react to each other). The DC restaurant food/service are laughably bad. Every table in the restaurant was calling for the manager. The cafeteria is your normal overpriced chili and burgers you see at day ski places. The hotel rooms are way overpriced. Just bite the bullet and drive the extra few hours to Snowshoe if you're coming from the DC area. Far superior mountain, service, and amenities. read more

Paid a couple hundred dollars for snowboarding lessons for my 7 and 9 year old. Wow what a disaster. Way too many kids for the staff to handle and they spent the majority of the time sitting around. I paid for half day lessons and the website says to arrive by 8:30am and lessons are from 9-12. My kids spent 9:00-10:20am sitting around inside the yurt doing absolutely nothing. The staff claimed this was to get the kids gear on. Well shouldn't that be happening between 8:30-9:00am prior to actual lesson starting? Prior to booking the lesson I asked to make sure my kids would be in the same group since they had the basic concept of snowboarding down and needed to learn techniques (turning, stopping, etc) but turned out they split them into two groups anyway and my 7 year was bored out of his mind with the littler kids. Complaining to staff and management went nowhere and one staff member argued that the lessons were actually from 10-12. It's basically a money scam if you ask me. Kids all over the place and improperly trained staff that are trying to manage way too many kids. They shouldn't allow that many reservations for the same time period. My older son literally went down the larger hill a total of one time. They would go a small distance and then just sit on the Hill for 10-20 minutes freezing their butts off. It would of been cheaper to just get lift tickets and let them learn on their own. This turned out to be a terrible Christmas gift for our kids. On the plus side we had fun with the tubing the day before but beware of the countless amount of tubes that are ripped on the bottom and will slow you down on the hill. read more

SAFETY ISSUES!! DANGER!! This is regarding snow tubing. From the mouths of TWO of their employees, they were short staffed on a busy saturday evening. The top of the hill was in total chaos as they clearly sold too many tickets, people pushing and cutting their way. The crowd was pretty unruly and of course, they were all trying to blast past the safety wall at the bottom of the hill. We decided to leave early because the crowds were awful and it stopped being fun. As we returned the tubes, I got hit so hard from an out of control customer that I lost consciousness!! The so-called safety features they have at the bottom of the hill are clearly not adequate as people were getting mowed down left and right. They have 2 young people down there trying to help but its obviously not enough. As I regained consciousness, one employee came to see if I was ok but quickly had to go back to his post to make sure others weren't going to get hit. I would chalk this up to being a freak accident but it happened more then once while we were there. If I had been an older person or a toddler, that person would have needed an ambulance. We had to leave Deep Creek early because I got a concussion due to the negligence of the management of Wisp. Perhaps the most painful aspect of this accident was the heartless reply from management when I contacted them. They did not ask how I was feeling nor did they offer an apology, they simply said that the hill met the States safety standards for that day....COLD! I beg of you, unless you love out of control crowds and disorganization, do NOT go here. If you have small children, DO NOT go here. read more

The rooms are not the best but the slopes were a nice change of pace vs Seven Springs or Hidden Valley. Squirrels Cage was a double diamond run we hit a few times and the trails were in great shape. We went snow tubing in the afternoon, next time on the East coast would like to try it at night. read more

Terrible customer service. I purchased a weekend lift pass. I skied in 9 degree temps and was one of the few people out in the morning. After breaking for lunch my own equipment failed. Actually have a crack that formed in my ski boot. I had two and a half hours left to ski with my family. However the resort wanted to charge me a full day rental for boots and skies. They don't rent just boots. They don't have a half-day rental or night skiing rate. So I went back to condo. Poor customer service too... they did not seem to know how to show empathy for my situation. Heck I might have gone with the cost but got such a cold response it really put me off. On the way out I saw a rental shop near the main road and when in. They not only showed empathy, they gave me the one hour for free and a cheaper rate for the next day. Skip the mountain and stop before you get there I say! SORRY WISP, you need to make some changes. read more

Too expensive. Particularly have to watch out for premium days that they still close at 5. I.e. 1 Jan 2017 caught me off guard as closing at 5 but still 80 dollar lift ticket. Watch out for mondays of MLK and presidents where they will do the same thing charging premium price but close at 5. Relatively nice east coast skiing and for 9-9, 80 dollars bearable. But not worth it compared to other options when they charge premium, $80, for 9-5. read more

My review is for the mountain coaster only, and at $25 for three adults to take one run, it's not a cheap ride. It was fun, lasted less than a minute (well, the lift chain took a few minutes), and I would go again if they had some inclusive or day pass for all of their activities. Good weekend getaway for a skier / boarder pining for Western slopes. This year's snow is looking pretty good at the mountain and you can find a few solid runs worth the drive. It's a short mountain with short runs and long lifts, but a better option than other resorts in the area. read more

Wisp has really upped their game this year. Wisp resort is now a full 4 season resort....they have recently finished their olympic sized white water rafting course, mountain coaster, as well as other on-mountain activities. In the winter they have one of the nicest ski resorts within a few hrs drive of DC. They are also working on opening up a new area of the resort complete with tree skiing. If you are looking for a nice weekend getaway - this is your place. The only area for improvement is this area's nightlife. It is great in the summer w/ bars all over the lake, but it could use a little bit of help in the winter. read more

had a blast this past weekend at teh resort. skiing was great and the lines werent very long. this was their busiest weekend and it was handled well. I also love the many outlets they have. whether in teh bar or out on the deck, there are drinks to be had and at a reasonable price. I cant wait to go back. The ski school was also great for my 5 year old. He had a full day lesson and went in scared and came out wanting to go up teh lift with me. I will be back soon. read more

Great conditions. It's a very wide mountain, it can take 3 runs and 3 lifts to get from one side to the other. It's only about 700 vertical, but my kids don't mind. The frozen lake view on some of the slopes is a great photo op! They have new stuff in a new yurt village. read more

AVOID THIS PLACE, THE DISC GOLF IS A SCAM. The summer activities are an absolute joke, especially the disc golf. We were charged $29 per person to go walk around the resort finding random disc golf holes with no assistance or directions. I quite frankly do not understand how this course isn't free considering the holes are basically just randomly placed in the forest. Almost every hole had a narrow 15 foot fairway surround by trees, brush, forest, and lovely poison ivy. Some holes are actually placed within 3 feet of the woods, so you make a great first throw within feet of the hole and feel great right? NOPE because your disc is laying in poison ivy behind a line bushes. Included in the $29 was the cost to rent the discs which typically come in sets of 3, but they didn't even have enough discs so each one of us (5 in my group) were only given 2 discs and still made to pay full cost. Maybe they would have the full amount of discs available if they made a course where it was humanly possible to keep your disc in play. Along with the horrible disc golf play, a lift ride is included up to the back 9 of the course. The lift operator actually did not apply the gate/guard rail over our chest for the lift, so my group and I were left dangling multiple stories in the air with no protection. As you can imagine that was rather dangerous facing a fall to our death, but in hindsight a fall off the lift would have saved us from an extra hour of poison ivy, bug bites, and frustratingly boring disc golf holes. Shame on you Wisp Resort for misleading families coming to deep creek for a nice summer getaway into playing $29 a person for a joke of an activity. I ask you to do the right thing and make this course free, that way the customers get to put zero money into the course, the same amount you did when you made this absurd course. If anyone finds any of the 9 discs my group left in the wilderness PLEASE DO NOT return them to Wisp. Give them to a kid for free so something positive can come out of this experience. The fact Wisp even lists this as an activity shows they are a trash organization with garbage morals. Wisp please give up on summer activities and find a new slant. If anyone in the organization wants to contact me about improving the course please don't. Just give up, like you did when making this activity. read more

I am giving this resort only two stars not because of any major nightmares but because of a simple "Are you kidding me!" Ok a ski resort without a wood burning fire place? REALLY! Come on Man! Now they had one in the 50 years plus of its history but apparently cost cut backs this year will not allow for it. Really? Aren't they like right in the middle a forest? As one of the other comments pointed out "Cant the foreign staff" like go gather some wood? Maybe a collection box next to the once beautiful fireplace for the wood. I cant think of any one coming off the slopes freezing not willing to kick in a few bucks to sit by the fire with a nice hot toddy. If you have ever watched ESPN and the "come on man" out takes when someone drops the ball thrown right to them or a team is on the one foot line and after 4 attempts to get in the end zone they fail. Well "come on man!" a ski resort without a wood burning fireplace to cozy up to? Come on man! lets get with the program here. It has to be the only ski resort in the country without a wood burning fireplace to warm up to. You cant imagine the disappointment in everyone's voice we spoke to about ok like why is the fireplace closed? It is (was) actually located in one of the bar areas close to the slopes perfect for relaxing and warming up after freezing on the mountain. Maybe they would get more customers to sell drinks to to pay for the firewood if they actually lit the fireplace! Again the resort is decent clean rooms comfortable beds friendly staff etc but if you are looking for the full ski mountain experience look elsewhere and make sure if you go tell the management "No wood burning fireplace really? Come on man! like your kidding right? If you look at some of the ads for other hotels and resorts they are all picking up on it. They say come sit by our warm fire in our lounge after a long day on the slopes. One even touts and I quote "We have two warm wood burning fireplaces to lounge by" read more

One man band in Whispers, can't hear him 10 feet away. This place is missing the boat so bad! Play some music, up your game! This review is regarding weddings at The Wisp The Wisp was a great place for our wedding. One of the best things about having our wedding there was our coordinator - Andrea Fitzwater. I feel like she really made a big effort from walking me through the planning and recommending vendors, getting our entire wedding party and guests access to the ski lift to attend the mountaintop ceremony, planning a bonfire w/ beer and smores the night before the wedding, accomodating 2 separate food tastings (one for just my Mom and myself), bringing in special rum from Trinidad for my husband's family, helping us set up the favors and decorations for the reception, setting up our overnight bags in a special wedding hotel room, transporting my husband and I around the venue for pictures and coordinating with my vendors, day of coordinator and guests. She was great. The only reason I gave a 4 out of 5 for responsiveness was due to the bar manager, Vicky. Our contract stated that they would be able to provide us with an imported rum as part of the bar menu. When it came down to finding the rum it didn't seem like she tried very hard and was somewhat rude about it when we provided her POCs to call regarding it. Fortunately Andrea persevered and helped us out with getting it. Very big kudos go out to her - she was really great and made us feel comfortable about the entire process. As for value - I think we faired very well but I did overhear some of the other wedding couples at the tasting and they all had various deals depending on which wedding coordinator they were dealing with. The Wisp seemed to have a lot of turnover at the time we were in the planning process. Also - I would say that the facility could be reonovated. It is a ski lodge and not the Ritz so we weren't expecting state of the art luxury but the venue itself needs to be updated - the rooms were out of date and the indoor facility needs a facelift in most areas. Overall I would highly recommend having your wedding here. read more

Had a few days of work nearby and decided to take advantage of the resort area at an off time. Instead of booking my usual haunts....Choice Hotels...I decided to splurge a bit on the resort hotel. All the brochures and online information had said that this particular hotel spent 1.5 million in renovations. Way off season at $119 per night...ok...I'll spend that. What a disappointment. ..a really weird guest room suite no less. Small tv...murphy bed from the 80s...and furniture that looked like it was stolen from a 1900s mens club. I get loads more from a Comfort Inn at 1/2 the cost. I guess when it said Wisp Lakeside Resort...I expected a resort...says so right on the sign. What I got was a cheesy outdated room with a pretty shower curtain. Not even a table to hold your favorite libation. Really...check out the rooms BEFORE you commit. Better yet...book the Comfort Inn and bank the points. A much better value. read more

This review is for the mechanic at the resort's bike center. I was staying with family at a house on top of the mountain and wanted to ride the trails and was told to go to the bike shop to sign a waiver. As easy as it would have been to skip this and just ride, I respected the rules and rode my bike down. I went into the bike shop at the base of the mountain and was greeted by a very professional, knowledgable mechanic/manager. I'm an occasional employee, once manager, of a bike shop back home and can appreciate how difficult it is to find a knowledgable, courteous head mechanic. I told Tom I just wanted to ride the trails, no chairlift, and he was fine with that, just had to sign a waiver. I mentioned my bike's brakes were making lots of noise so he offered to give a quick look and he did a great, fast quick tune up. Tom also suggested trails for me to ride on the mountain and other local trails. Great experience with this bike shop and would highly recommend going there for your bike maintenance needs. read more

Nice resort but the 2017 lift ticket weekend prices are ridiculous. $83 for full day and only 18 trails out of 34 open. Almost all blacks were closed. They are trying to make up for loses from last year but they'll loose again this year with those kind of prices. No discounts offered even for 2 day pass. read more

I must say the entire staff, no matter which area of the resort we ventured, were extremely courteous and helpful. We were here for three nights in September for a conference but enjoyed plenty of free time to explore as well. Breakfast in DC's Restaurant was great and the prices were decent considering this is a resort. The Creme Brulee' French Toast and Applewood Smoked Bacon along with coffee and orange juice came to about $14 total. Service was friendly and prompt and the food came out piping hot and delish! Over at Mountain Adventures we bought tickets for the Mountain Coaster and the Ski Lift, again staff was pleasant and informative. Coaster was so fun! Then take the ski lift to the mountain top to explore scenery and a visit over to the white river rafting. Take a camera! The banquet staff, again, very friendly and attentive. Food at all our events was good - not great - but good for mass servings. The rooms in the hotel are dated - flashback to the 60's/70's, but nice, spacious and clean. Everything was in working order, temperatures were comfortable, private bedroom, separate sitting area (with a Murphy bed!!), bathroom up to date and clean! Housekeeping was excellent and left us a note to enjoy our stay (that doesn't happen often!!). Overall, an excellent stay and will definitely be back! read more

Summary: good trails, inefficient and chaotic registration and rental process, insufficient equipment and rude staff. Specific details follow below. Note that this was during a 4 day teacher workday for Fairfax county which certainly contributed to the chaos and crowds. The mountain itself is a 4. Everything else was a disaster. I will start with the good. The mountain offers some of the better skiing in the area with close to 30 trails. The rest was bad. My customer experience was miserable. The rental line was an unorganized nightmare. It took over an hour to equip my 9 year old son and I. They did not have the proper size skis for either of us nor did they have any helmets left. It's was incredibly hot downstairs, so by the time we had everything needed we were drenched with sweat. I noticed they had fans but none of them were turned on. After finally getting everything together we trekked up to the smallest trail (which took awhile with a young kid learning to ski). Unfortunately, only after getting situated did I come to find out the shop had not sized my bindings correctly. My boots would not clip in. So we had to take everything off, walk back to the rental shop, get them re-adjusted, walk back to the lift then put everything back on. Finally, 2 hours after arriving we stepped on the first lift, the smallest slope w/ the magic carpet. The beginners area was incredibly crowded and difficult to navigate, within 30 seconds my son wiped out next to an instructor who promptly yelled at him for not being ready to ski yet. Mind u we are on the beginner bunny slope. He was incredibly rude. It took every ounce of restraint for me not to lose it on this guy. Ironically, I called to get my son a lesson the day before but they were completely booked. The line to get back up the slope was 15 minutes so we managed only 2 more runs before my son had enough. All in all we spend 3 hours and $200 for 3 runs down a 30 second hill. read more

Hotel is outdated and Desk manager was not very friendly. I asked the manager to explain my charges and their tone and attitude was very inappropriate. Suites and Luxury rooms did not have a window view in the bedroom and were closed off from the rest of the room. When attempting to golf at the Wisp Golf course the desk manager rolled his eyes at me and quoted policy on not golfing with shirts without a collar. There are ways to communicate these things and these people have a lot to learn. There are better places to stay and the area is beautiful with many opportunities. Look somewhere else. read more

Been going to wisp for years. The mountain is never fully open anymore. But my main complaint is the costumer service in the shops at the "resort". My boyfriend purchased pants from the Rossignol shop. Everything in the stores is insanely over priced, wisp loves to rip off there guests. We paid 160 dollars for a very average pair of pants. Within minutes of wearing them they ripped in the crotch. We went to return them and the manager (who we spoke to on the phone) was so rude and refused to give us a refund. We would have even taken a store credit but she was rude and could care less about customer service. She claims there is signs all over the store saying sales are final, I went back to check, there is none. All she would do was exchange the pants, even tho they do not fit correctly, and will likely rip again. So now we are out 160 dollars with poorly fitting pants that we don't want. I will NEVER buy from wisp stores again. read more

We took the Mid-Week Madness offer this past week and really had a great time. When I called to make the reservation, they asked if we were going to rent equipment. When I said yes, they informed me that they can provide a 20% discount on rental if included in the package. This was only my wife's second time skiing so I spent most of the time on the easy slopes, but these were really nice. The way the many different slopes interconnect, it can be a little confusing. There are also parts where it is rather flat between different runs, so that can be frustrating. All of the staff seemed very friendly. The food was pretty much standard resort fare at standard high prices. My wife had a cup of the clam chowder and she said it was very good. I had the burger and fires and they were edible. As for the hotel. It was dated, but clean. They do also offer tubing, ice skating, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and even a coaster. We didn't try and of these, so I can't say if they are worth it. Overall a great resort for the Mid-Atlantic region. The staff is very friendly. If you are new to skiing, go during the week, as the slopes are empty, and if you are taking a lesson, you will probably be the only one with the instructor so you get a personal lesson for the price of a group lesson. We will be going again. read more

My first time at Wisp was a great one. I enjoyed the fact that my company paid for most of it, and I enjoyed the fact that the house we stayed at was nothing short of amazing. The worst part of my drive was naturally getting stuck in Northern VA traffic on 270. But, for the most part, Wisp is a pretty easy drive. It's somewhat scenic, I've had some really BAD drives but this one isn't that bad, I found it somewhat nice. I had no problem parking and at the time that I went I didn't have my own equipment. Not a problem as the process was a painless process. The equipment seemed a little bit daunting, but I found out that they now have a new fleet so this is encouraging. We went on most of the trails and found them to be pretty good. Wisp is pretty dependable when it comes to snow, and as always it's nice to have some fresh snow before you go and we were fortunate to have had that so it made riding enjoyable. The food there was OK, I don't exactly remember the prices of everything but I remember not complaining as much so that's a big plus for them. Overall, I would definitely go back there again--and of course I am. If you live in the Northern VA area this should be one of the resorts you should consider skiing/riding. read more

Went to a wedding there a few weeks ago. Stayed overnight on a Saturday. Rates were reasonable and the room was pretty spacious. The front desk was nice when we asked for a few extra minutes before checkout time. Their only restaurant was slow on service and they stop serving all food at 10 on a Saturday night. Not even french fries at the bar after that. Wedding was beautiful and is a pretty good value for the money. read more

Don't waste your time here... There are many higher quality resorts much closer to DC and if you want to travel out that way there are better trails just down the road in West Virginia. Trails at Wisp are often closed early in the season. Safety is an issue at this resort. If you do choose to go be careful getting on the lift, often attendants aren't paying attention.
