Avoid this family practice. They recently moved all their offices to their Bee Cave location and didn't even bother to reschedule their patients to the new location. That what the first surprised when arriving at the central Austin location for my annual checkup and the office was simply empty. I then called to reschedule and they informed me that my doctor didn't even work here anymore (?!). You thought they would at least have the decency to apologize? Not even. Also, they charge an $80 admin fee when joining the practice, supposedly to cover their online platform costs. Platform which is by the way used by most family practices and is usually not being charged. They will also try to prescribe you their vitamins that are probably just white label ones branded with their name and cost twice the price than what you can find online. Basically, this so called integrative medicine practice is just a money grab. read more

Dr Wiseman and his team have been my practice for close to a decade now. I feel well taken care of. A lot of doctors struggled to handle my specific set of issues, but Dr Wiseman has been able to get me a good part of my life back with a mixture of vitamins and traditional medicine. Also very good for last minute help with seasonal colds and other things. I miss their old Westlake office, but the new one is easier to park in. read more

I have been here twice so far. Getting a schedule is a real chore and hard to do when you start. I met with the NP for my first virtual visit. However, the annoying part is that she went on maternity leave the following week. We had a plan established, but that was thrown out. Anyway, I had got test results sent in the portal without any explanation or treatment plan. When I called about it, they said I needed to schedule an appointment with another NP who took me as a patient while my other primary provider was out. I couldn't get in for over a month. It wasn't enjoyable because of the digestive issues I was dealing with. So I have my third visit scheduled for next month and hope it will improve. A few upfront desk people are not the most pleasant to interact with either. read more

This is the only practice I know of that is functional/integrative medicine that takes insurance. Dr. wiseman wanted everyone to have access to this kind of care and not pay hundreds for an appointment. My visits are free, with insurance. Are there issues, sure. There are a lot of moving parts, but when you are the only one in the game doing this, I think it's reasonable to expect. I don't think they have any issues beyond any other doctor's office I deal with, and WFP gives better care. So, please take that into consideration when reading negative reviews and weigh it against other offices that have the same issues and lesser care than WFP. I have had some not so great experiences with back office; this is true. But I have had great ones too. Most notably, I have had excellent and even enjoyable communications with Lisa Barraza. She was previously an MA and now works in the back office as a support staff. She is phenomenal. She does her job with so much pride and does it correctly. Mistakes don't happen with this woman... because she cares about each patient and cares about doing things right...the first time. When she picks up the phone, you can HEAR the smile on her face, because she loves what she does. She has a fantastic attitude, loves to solve problems for people and she is a great listener. I actually ENJOY talking to her, because she is so nice and easy going. I wish everyone were like this, and if I still owned a business, I would hire her to run it. She exceeds all of my expectations, every time. WFP is pretty great. NO ONE is perfect, but for what they are doing and providing, they do it better than I could ever expect. I wouldn't go anywhere else. With tons of crappy health issues, I have seen more doctors than I can count, from Gp's to specialists. There are good and bad, but no one has come close to the amazing care I get from Kristen Bernal at WFP Austin Central. I have been seeing her for 8 years and she makes me feel like a family member would if they were treating me. She treats each patient as an individual. There is no "one size fits all" approach to medicine and she gets that perfectly. She remembers details about your medical history, meds and personal life with an accuracy I cannot comprehend. I am convinced she is a genius. She is constantly going to trainings, conferences and researching things, on her own time. She never stops learning and any new health issue with which she isn't an expert (which is rare) she sees as a challenge to learn about and help guide your treatment. Without her care, I would likely be dead. That isn't an exaggeration. She has diagnosed things other practices missed or ignored. She has treated things no one would treat. She finds the root cause instead of just covering it up with a medication or giving up. I go to her for routine stuff and for really complicated stuff. I have never been let down or walked away without help. Each visit I learn a lot of really useful new things from her. She has so many areas of expertise, I couldn't list them all. But, I can tell you my personal experience with specific things that she has treated and seen proof of her boundless knowledge. She is extremely well versed in gut issues, both preventative and corrective, all the way from basic to really severe digestive disease. Autoimmune disease: She is up to date and super knowledgeable on every area of immune dysregulation. I have a complicated combo of autoimmune and immune deficiency and she handles it beautifully. Hormones: She is your go to. Male or female, she understands the importance of balancing reproductive hormones with both bioidentical hormone therapy and supplementation. If someone else has told you your Testosterone is fine, because it isn't low enough to treat... go to Kristen. She understand the complicated way hormones actually work. Don't go to some expensive hormone clinic...the care and knowledge here is far better, and my husband has the same experience with his HRT with Kristen. She is an expert in treating thyroid disease and dysfunction. She understands how to properly prescribe T3/T4 combos and how to test progress. This is not the case with other places I have been to. Blood sugar is another biggy. She knows this subject well and is extremely skilled at helping you get your insulin in check, whether diabetic or not, but she also refers out to endocrinologists she trusts for extra input. She is also super knowledgeable in treating EBV, Lyme, infections, viruses, etc. and has been so helpful in making me feel human again. I love that if I go to some specialist and they say, "you are fine, or you don't need that test, etc. " Kristen actually listens and knows that if YOU think something isn't right, you, as the patient are the best judge, because you LIVE in that body. Oh my goodness. What an experience. This practice was recommended to me by my OB/GYN after my beloved PCP retired and I was looking for a new PCP. I think the Wiseman name used to carry a lot of weight in Austin? Used to, anyway. The practice is a little strange in that it seems to be a handful of NPs and one doctor, the aforementioned Wiseman. I am not sure if he's ever in the office, but his name is on the door. As a new patient, I was placed with Janice Mattocks. She was kind and responsive when we would meet, but getting to meet/talk to her was a near impossibility with the almost aggressive obstruction of the front desk. It was like Jekyll and Hyde. I would have a caring discussion with Mattocks who would tell me, "I don't work Fridays but I always build in admin hours. Please call the front desk and tell them to send me a message so we can figure out the combo of meds that work for you. Or send a message through the portal!" And then...the wall of resistance would fall on me. No, the front desk staff would tell me, we do NOT send messages to doctors. Or, "I have a new girl at that location who doesn't know how to do anything yet. Please go through the portal." I know to expect wait times and delays when I call a doctor's office, but a wait time of 45 mins to 1 hour is ROUTINE for this practice. It's almost impossible to get someone to answer the phone, and when the front desk does pick up the phone, they are rude and condescending and will tell you to take every request to the patient portal. Oh and guess what? Messages and refill requests submitted through the patient portal are answered even more slowly than the phone. I have had messages ignored and the ones that were answered were curt and often full of incorrect information. I had the misfortune to have a herniated disc a week ago, which was excruciating and something I'd never experienced before. I fought the long phone wait times at Wiseman for an appointment, and when I finally got it, was given Tylenol III and sent home with a diagnosis of general back pain. However, I knew something was really wrong with me, so I fought the long wait times on the phone again and begged them to submit orders for an MRI to ARA. After another day of pain and no sleep, orders were submitted, and I got the MRI. I also asked for a referral to a physical therapist, which was granted, and the PT showed me the MRI scan the day after I had been scanned. It took Wiseman 2 days to send me the results. The MRI scan clearly showed a herniated disc and nerve compression. No wonder I was in so much pain. I would not recommend this practice due to the incompetence of the front desk. The nurse practitioners seem kind, but they are kept under lock and key and you won't get to talk or see them very often so what is the point? Please, for your health and sanity, look elsewhere. read more

Wiseman Family Practice - Still on hold. - Naturopathic/Holistic Near Me - Austin, Texas

Pretty disappointed in this place. I switched over to them last week for my PCP. I should probably add that you cannot speak to a human if you're a new patient. You must fill out their registration forms and await a phone call to schedule. That phone call alone takes about 2 weeks and you must actually schedule a time to schedule an appointment. I don't really hold this against them too much, as doctors are a little hard to come by these days. Still, not a great experience. The real concern with this place is their billing practices. They are rather unscrupulous, in my view. Once I finally got scheduled for a new patient telehealth appointment, I actually had a great experience with the N.P. I saw. Once that appointment was complete, I received a phone call from their admin. They informed me that Dr. Wiseman charges a $75 'new patient' fee. NOT my copay, NOT for the cost of the visit. Rather, he requires that you pay him to become his patient - in addition to the cost of care. I was pretty appalled. I told the admin that this information had not been given to me beforehand and I expressed displeasure at feeling like I was being taken advantage of. She agreed and advised that she would get with her office manager and have that junk fee voided. That was 3 days ago and I have now received 4 emails and a text wanting $75 because I became their patient. Sorry, but I definitely can't trust someone with my health who operates a practice with such a lack of integrity. I will find a different doctor, but thought this warranted a review. I am almost certain that it violates their insurance contract with my carrier as well, but we shall see, as I will let them know also. I have been at this practice since 2022. I enjoyed my experience with Janice Mattocks but once she left it was downhill fast. I couldn't get a new doctor at this practice who would be my PCP and do what she did. I started to see Cynthia Fafel (FNP) and she gave the impression she did not care about me because I was coming in for immunizations and medication refills. She was disrespectful, her tone was so rude, and seemed to have a lack of patience for anything. I felt like this was the most wasted use of my time ever. Not to mention it was a 45 min drive one way. I proceeded to ask for the flu immunization as that was the only way they can give me. What PCP doesn't give immunizations....??? Some lady named Zoei Alexander (maybe a nurse) came in and gave me my shot. She didn't even prep the area or give me a cotton swab / band aid after. Blood got all over my shirt. How unprofessional. She also was rude, stating they are not responsible for flu like symptoms after this shot. Like ok...?? I needed proof of this shot and getting that printed was like winning the lottery. Why is proof of a vaccine so hard to get from a healthcare provider? Anyway, after a wasted 2 hours I got it. I went to get blood drawn and she sent it to the wrong place. I have never been so upset with a PCP and will be finding a new one. Thanks Wiseman for the few good months I had with Janice but your practice needs more considerate doctors who want to care for patients. I needed to find a new practitioner and wanted someone who could prescribe medication but who didn't necessarily think of a prescription as the first option for treatment. I was delighted to find Wiseman Family Practice fit the bill. They accept my insurance, are able to take care of all my preventative care, and respectfully listen to my opinions when deciding how to approach any concerns I have. The process to become a new patient was a little lengthy, but we'll worth it. I'm very confident that I made the right choice in becoming a patient in this practice. read more

Yeesh. Definitely do not recommend. The front desk person at the Central Location was completely short, rude, and had absolutely no interest in helping me--she acted like my call was an inconvenient nuisance. I called to request a copy of my lab orders ahead of time (due to my new patient appointment being a complete waste of time, Wiseman rushing and interrupting me, not listening to my full story, asking me zero questions about my symptoms or what I've been experiencing, etc.) so that I could make sure he had ordered everything I needed. The receptionist told me several times that I could not have access to them (which is ridiculous and something I've never been told). I continued to prod until she finally said she could send them via email. Whyyy in the world was that not what was said and done from the beginning?? Plus, the lab orders had tests that weren't necessary at all (EX: He ordered two different celiac tests when I had already noted on my intake form that I had celiac disease and was diagnosed in 2005). Why would you not ask someone first? It's truly the bare minimum of being a doctor. They were also missing a specific lab that I had requested Anyway, if you just need a PCP to dole out antibiotics here and there, you're probably fine to come here. But, if you're dealing with any sort of chronic health issues, I absolutely do not recommend putting your health in their hands. Find somewhere else that wants to take the time and cares about you getting better. read more

This post is long overdue. My husband has been going here for years and mainly has been seeing Jamie Garza, but has switched to Kristen because Jamie has been so dismissive of him. He had long Covid and had a high fever for 8 weeks. I was freaking out because a fever for 8 weeks is totally not normal (to me anyways). I'm an inpatient nurse in women's health, so infectious disease processes are not my specialty. I was relying on this clinic to meet his needs, because I did not know what was going on and what to do. After so much worrying and repeated high fevers and Garza not seeming to be concerned I suggested I take him the the ER to figure out what's going on because the staff at the practice wasn't helping him! Garza basically laughed at me and told me I was overracting! She has told him for several months that he probably has an autoimmune disease going on, but won't tell him which one, do the testing, give referrals, or give him a definitive diagnosis. I google diagnosed him a year and a half ago with MS and he is currently seeing a Neurologist that she referred him to-so I do thank her for that. But, I do think that if he does have MS-it was missed several years ago when he first started seeing her and having these random body issue concerns that are consistent with MS. He would never let me go to the clinic with him to be his advocate becuase he says I'm an "annoying healthcare worker"(which I am, but I'm also very reasonable). Anyways, long story short-if you have something serious going on don't see Garza. I think she's probably great for your basic healthcare needs and Kristen is great and not dismissive! Also, we pay more through our health insurance to go to Wiseman, so we expect better care, but I'm not sure we have received that in the past. read more

Really disappointed with my experience taking my baby for a well check at the Central location. Hard to schedule, front staff was rude. If you're going to advertise that you treat children, you should be equipped in some way to accommodate children in your office. I had to weigh my 15 month old on a scale for adults and the nurse acted annoyed because she kept crawling off. I proceeded to wait well over half an hour in a room with drawers full acupuncture needles. Not fun with an exploratory toddler. When the NP finally came in she was ok, but didn't seem like she had much experience with kids. She never introduced herself so don't remember her name. She rushed out without saying goodbye and there was no follow up paperwork for the appointment such as a growth chart or anything. The only upside is that they take my insurance. read more

We are just starting looking into a functional doctor. Having only business previously I feel like the portal is very helpful. To have to pay someone to answer the phone just to tell somebody you don't take their insurance is a waste of resources on the doctors office I am going to ignore a lot of these complaints and check it out for myself, going to a functional doctor is a big step with my fibromyalgia and thyroid issues. I just want a good doctor and time Hass to be managed for me to be able to afford a good doctor in case y'all haven't noticed all the doctors are now walking you up to the reception area because there is only so little time allowed by insurance for each visit, I'm amazed how many doctors have managed to stay in business after this horrible Covid. The web site said there might be a 2-3 week delay I get that. I filled out the online form. I know they got it because it said they did. But after a month then 2 and no response... I called no answer, left message no response. I can deal with back ups I'm mean it was the time of COVID I get it. But how hard would a courtesy phone call be??? Impossible to get an appointment. It's a never ending back and forth - you have to fill out a form, then in a few weeks they email you, then they *might* call you within a two hour window. If you miss the call and call back they have you start this process all over again. A complete joke of a process. I'm going elsewhere. read more

This clinic doesn't seem to care about their clients. A staff member told me they were "told" to never answer their phones. I have been trying to get hormones since April and now its October. I have completely given up on this establishment. I did a televisit and was not told they were going to bill me $60. I received a bill later over the portal. I had 2 appointments to go in and get hormone pellets and both appointments were cancelled at the last minute. No one bothered to tell me the day before. I took off and drove there to find out it was cancelled. There is one manager for about 4 locations! Obviously the owner doesn't care how patients are treated. read more

It is nearly impossible to get in touch with a human. Hold wait times typically exceed 30 minutes. My communications about billing via the patient portal went entirely unanswered. When my PA provider left their office, we were not contacted with a contingency plan, so my son was left high and dry, without a provider. Once you actually get hold of someone, they are helpful. I think the problem has to do with a misguided attempt to reduce patient facing personnel costs. read more

I've been seeing him for over 10 years as my PCP. His approach is logical, informative, and understanding to my health care goals. I've seen him for all kinds of things including, thyroid, weightloss, loss of a loved one, allergies, a stubborn husband (that's now his PCP too!) and other ailments. I now bring my two sons 12 & 10. It's also easy to message the office, book appointments, and get refills requested and filled quickly through the website. This is the only office that gets the billing correct with our BCBS of TX HMO plan. They charge you a one time $55 for new patients. I can't complain because they bill me spot on accurate. I've had billing issues everywhere else except here! The office is always fully booked. That is a good thing but somehow people seem to complain about any and everything these days! read more

I am supposed to have my 2nd visit today but I cannot get through to a live person to clarify their billing error for the first visit and don't want to get charged incorrectly for the second visit today again. I was really looking forward to having a functional doctor to help me balance what's happening in my body. However, their front desk never picks up and instead of rescheduling an appointment, even if you've previously left a message, they'd rather send you a $50 cancellation fee than pick up your calm or call you back to reschedule. The doctors are great once you get in and see them, they are very thorough and really try to get to the source of problems instead of just treating symptoms. But... everything else is so frustrating that we are going elsewhere now. It takes so long to get an appointment, which makes it useless when you're sick and need to get in. Covid precautions also don't allow for sick visits to be in office (only virtual) which is frustrating for my kids because I want their ears and lungs checked which you can't do virtually. You can't get on the phone with anyone ever. They charge stupid fees I don't see anywhere else at their practice. Like You have to pay to be apart of the patient portal. If this practice hired more administrative staff to handle phone calls and other administrative tasks I think it would go a long way to make patient experience better ALL AROUND. They also need more availability for doctors for urgent medical needs. read more

The staff seem to be better about wearing masks now than they were 6 months ago. There is a high turnover with nurse practitioners. That said, I have liked each one I've seen. I have used Wiseman Family Practice Central location for 5 years when I moved back to Texas. This isn't a convenient location for me as I live approximately an hour away, but I wouldn't go anywhere else. My FNP Kristen is the best. She always answers my questions and gives great suggestions. Any referrals to specialists are top notch. I only have a couple of prescriptions that I use, which are compounded, and Wiseman has allowed me to continue the compounded versions. Even though most communication is through the Patient Portal, staff is quick to respond. I have recently begun acupuncture for foot pain with LAc Robin. She is wonderful. Pain has diminished greatly. She answers all my questions and her suggestions are helpful. I was drawn to Wiseman Family Practice as they promote healthy living through diet and exercise. read more

So my fiancé Has had some health issues and the practice was really good. But then she was out put on a medication for her thyroid. She was on it for about 6 weeks then had some major issues with it raising her heart rate and other serious things. Well my fiancé emailed the practice and David knight seemed to not care about this issue. Through the person who supports David told me he said "to go to the doctors office/emergency room". I totally understand telling me to go there but then to not respond to how to fix the issue. I had to go to another practitioner who is helping me with this issue. I've been a patient of this practice for over a year. My previous NP left the practice in December and I have seen Jamie Garza since May. I absolutely love her! Jamie is so caring and takes the time to listen to my concerns. She cares about how I'm feeling--emotionally and physically--and has recommendations that fit for my lifestyle. The office staff is friendly and I never wait longer than 15 minutes past my appointment time. My feelings about this place started off pretty rocky - the only way to make a new patient appointment is online and then you wait around for them to call you. After 4 days passed, I tried calling in and was unable to get through. Someone did finally reach out about a week later, which seemed strange to me - when I have been in the two times they never seemed THAT busy, but what do I know. On my initial appointment I met with Dr. Wiseman who was a nice enough guy, but seemed a bit rushed and was very quick to point me to their website that sells supplements (after me telling him I was happy with what I had). I met with Megan Roberts today who will, presumably, be my primary practitioner going forward. She was great! I got the sense that she really listened, had some great knowledge and got me on a good plan. I'm really looking forward to working with her. When I had to call back today about a question regarding a prescription, I sat on hold for 11 minutes (with the phone system claiming I'm #1 in the queue the entire time) before finally giving up. My advice to Wiseman: hire more front desk staff and/or have a backup. Waiting a week for an initial callback and/or more than 5 minutes on hold doesn't leave a great impression. read more

Don't waste your time with this group. While I had a good experience with the doctor, his staff left a lot to be desired. My wife needed a copy of a receipt and it took them 2 months to respond to her, we physically had to go there and request it. A month later we asked for a letter of medical necessity to provide her FSA company with and they wanted $15 to write a letter. They told her she should be taking their supplements and won't write a letter?!?!!? They are horribly managed and do not care about their patients, only about their pockets. read more

I am a HUGE fan of Wiseman Family Practice (Westlake office). From the food documentaries and integral healing books in the waiting room...to the thoughtful, integral approaches to healing - they're a breath of fresh air. They have a warm and responsive staff -- Janice Mattocks (nurse), in particular, is stellar. It's fairly easy to get in to see them and they're extremely responsive to messages sent thru the online patient portal. I've never had to wait more than a day for a response.
