My friend and I had an overall fine experience with Discovery Bikes during our recent visit to…read moreStehekin. We arrived later than planned, quickly dropped our bags at the lodge, and headed straight to check out the bike rentals. Upon our arrival, I realized Discovery Bikes offers both e-bikes and standard pedal bikes. While my friend was interested in an e-bike, I personally couldn't justify the $40-$50 price tag for a shorter ride on a relatively flat, paved road, especially since I'm completely comfortable pedaling myself. Though, to be fair, I've never tried an e-bike but Stehekin didn't feel like the place I wanted to start... So, we ended up renting regular bikes, which I felt were overpriced given the quality. My friend's bike had issues with shifting gears, and at one point, her chain dropped completely. When we returned the bikes and mentioned the gear problem, the staff didn't even offer an apology which really rubbed me the wrong way. A little acknowledgment or concern would have gone a long way. It was, however, nice to have bikes so we could explore the Stehekin Valley Road at our own pace. We rode down past the bridge, stopped to check out the Stehekin Pastry Company, the garden, schools, waterfall, apple orchard, and more. It's was a beautiful and peaceful ride with a lot to see even if we didn't go all the way to the end of the road. Stehekin is a stunning place and I would love to come back someday to explore more (like all the way to the end of the road!)... Hopefully Discovery Bikes improves their bike maintenance and customer service in the meantime!

Located just a short walk from the ferry dock, Discovery Bikes offers a great way to get oriented…read moreduring your stay in Stehekin! We'd heard much about the bakery and rainbow falls, so we walked the 5 minutes to discovery bikes, met Kim, signed a waiver and were off! The prices were reasonable (about $4/hr with a $15 half-day rental) and you could really get to wherever you were looking to go in about 2 hours round trip. The bikes were in nice shape, were very comfortable, and it appeared you could get helmets as well (our group didn't). The hourly rental was so reasonable that we often just rented a bike to run up to the bakery for a snack (or to the organic farmer for goat cheese or bees). Super friendly, super reasonable--I'll definitely be renting from them again. Oh! And cash only!

Lovely lodge in Winthrop where you have access to some hiking trails and bike trails, pool and hot…read moretubs. The restaurant is pretty good, but make a reservation if you want to dine there as it gets pretty busy in the summer. The surroundings are beautiful and you can explore during the day then relax in a comfortable room at night. Staff was friendly. Note - North Cascades are not exactly close so you should have a car if you want to explore the mountains.

In all my travel experiences, fifty + years worth, I have never experienced such chaotic food…read moreservices as I experienced during my new years eve trip last month. The details are too long an involved to go into, but suffice it to say in a three night stay, the evening meals two of the three nights were 2 hour almost comical mis-adventures. After the last meal, capped off by the smell of a rotten cleaning rag left on the table behind us (reeking of rotten fish) my wife and I just lost it laughing at the complete absurdity of the whole situation. Oh, and by the way, the food ain't cheap. After the first night, I would have eaten outside the lodge, but that is impractical as the closest restaurants are in Winthrop which is mostly closed in the evening and a pretty tough drive down slick roads and back. To be fair, the new years eve celebratory meal (at $105 PP) was pretty good and not chaotic. (I am told the lodge owners were dining there that evening which may have affected the service) The lodge itself is nice, although our room, a fireplace room in the Gardner lodge was pretty worn and dated. In my mind, this place is nowhere worth what they charge and the difficulty of getting there. The upscale lodges in Leavenworth are for better,
