Needed an architect fast after escrow finally closed on a loft in the south end. Had located Colin…read moreSmith through Service Magic, a professional contractor resource for build projects, to design a 2 bdrm + master bath addition. I needed a 1 week turnaround to get permits before the contractor went on a short vacation and to submit plans for HOA approval. Colin Smith and his colleague, Ian Hurlburt delivered big time. Sure it helped that I had a draft plan ready & selected a contractor with a detailed estimate. But that doesn't take from the fact that these guys did a brilliant job. This entire project - from realtor, mortgage broker, lawyers & bank - was plagued by unbelievable incompetence. Colin Smith saved the day for my first Boston real estate experience. They were professional and the results were creative.

Colin and his team are excellent architects. They did a…read more2,500 sq/ft addition for me and couldn't have been happier with how it turned out. The space, layout and flow was excellent. They maximized the small space I had available to use. Their office is right next to the building department and he is well known in town. He knew the building department, zoning bylaws and how to navigate the process. He helped shepherd the project through the Historic District hearing and Zoning Board hearing. Unlike the other reviewer, who clearly was a mad neighbor and did not use his service, the house she referred to was 15,000sq/ft, not 9,000. It seems she is the one who does not have a good sense of size! This is Lexington, expect over sized houses!

We picked Dingman Allison Architects to help us with our renovations after interviewing at least 3…read moreother firms. We only had to meet with them briefly to be convinced that they were the right ones for the job. Thankfully, that proved to be true! Nancy Dingman and Blake Allison both worked on the project, though Nancy was more involved in this case. We did extensive renovations on a historical house in Cambridge, and needed expertise and advice on everything from structural recommendations, aesthetic concerns, moving walls, and revealing the beauty inherent in the old materials. Nancy served not only as a designer and manager of the architectural work, but also as our advocate with the construction company. They were a good company as well, but without Nancy's guidance we probably would have suffered a lot of additional charges and lower quality work. She made sure their work was progressing rapidly, that the design specs were implemented, and that we were not over charged. The project went fairly smoothly, despite many surprises inherent in a historical house. Nancy and Blake guided us through many minefields and we had full confidence in their recommendations. They are experienced, knowledgeable, confident and a pleasure to work with. Architecture fees are high by definition, but their rates were comparable to others and worth every penny. As a result we love the final appearance of our home.

Emily's knowledge and passion for what she does is far beyond what we experienced with other architects during our initial search. She outlined the process and expectations, as well as provided suggestions (i.e. outside costs for structural engineers, permits, surveying, etc.) for aspects which came up as needing to be a part of our project. She was familiar with local codes, our city, and was able to guide us to what we really wanted for our project while staying within our renovation budget. Emily remained involved in all facets of our project to ensure that we, as the clients, were happy and our vision was able to become a reality. We recently finished our renovation and are beyond happy with the outcome. We cannot recommend Emily at Lammert Design Studio enough! Without her vision, none of this would have been possible.

This is the perspective that I bring to each new project, including the design and renovation of my own house in Melrose, MA. Framing a view to the landscape, reinforcing clean volumes, developing a connection between rooms that didn't previously exist, and solving functional challenges when space is tight - are all design principles that I use to improve the quality of the built environment. Many design concepts spring from the same origin: How can we use what already exists a little differently so that it makes life easier, more inspired, more meaningful, and the spaces more beautiful? In addition to residential work, I have 10 years of experience working as an architect on large commercial, institutional, and master planning projects. My diverse design experience allows me to bring a fresh approach to residential design while maintaining a sensitivity to client's needs and the local context.

The new open space is just a joy to be in, even when we're not cooking, but even more so when we are. We are grateful for Schneidee's guidance through the design phase, recommending so much we would never have thought of ourselves, and generally being sure the new space would work for us. And it was tremendously comforting to have someone of John's expertise and resourcefulness guiding us through construction. Both Schneidee and John were a real pleasure to work with. I must admit, I thought "lifting spirits with spaces" was just a nice slogan, but it is indeed a real experience we have everyday. Super happy and super grateful!

He was a great listener, and then direct end up front with us about possibilities. We hope that we will have the opportunity to work with NEDC on a longer-term basis in the future.
