Because we have been having snowy and rainy weather at this time of the year, I used the Abe feature to ask the bookstore owner to be especially careful wrapping the book, to avoid water damage. He wrote back promptly and said he would. The book arrived with lots of protection against moisture and lots of padding. The latter is important because modern books have very poor bindings generally. During D-Day, the Allies designed a system of rubber skirting to allow Sherman tanks to float and be launched out from the beach. The design had a mixed record with many tanks sinking or floundering. If the owner of Liberty Book Store was alive in 1944 and was asked to use his waterproofing talent on the tanks, more would have come ashore and the Allies would have been in Berlin before the Red Army. The online order invoice showed that the owner would ship via media mail. But the book came much sooner - - almost as fast a Priority Mail shipment! This was a very positive experience and I will contact this store first when I am seeking other books.

In a time when so many independent book stores have gone under it was a pure delight to discover Book Exchange and Comic Shop. The intoxicating smell of the store is familiar to anyone who loves books. You can order books online but there is something so satisfying about going into a bookstore and holding the books in your hands as you make your decision. Awful Starbucks too, the few black coffees I've purchased are consistently burnt. It's pretty much impossible to find a staff member unless you're checking out, and often times there's long lines you have to wait though because there's one cashier behind the desk. There has been only one time I've seen an employee at the circulation desk. They didn't carry two out of the three books I asked about, and the one she told me was in stock was not on the shelves when I went to look. I approached her again (waiting through another long line of desperate book buyers) asking if she could direct me to the aisle the book I wanted was in, and she told me her system didn't have a book section listed. Can you imagine going to Publix, asking where the cereal is, and the cashier doesn't know? I remember when you shopped here and the employees not only knew where the book you wanted was, they could walk you right to where it was on the shelf and other sections where the author was listed. Also, why are there so many games and toys now? I must've seen five aisles of plastic light up toys and stuffed animals for kids, the cheap stuff you buy for your neighbor's cousin's birthday party. The kid's section was so sad to walk around. Poorly made picture books with AI-slop cartoons. Maybe a small handful of classics like Madeline and Brown Bear, Brown Bear. No chapter books as far as I could see. Instead of brightening our children's minds with imagination and literary challenges, they're dumbing them down with cheap content. I remember spending hours here with my Dad as a kid, paging through books while he sat with a coffee and magazine. I hope, so so much, that it can return to this.

Raptis Rare Books specializes in rare, antique, and first edition books. As a young child, Matt Raptis had a deep love of history which led him into a future career of collecting and selling rare books. In 2016 Matt and Adrienne Raptis moved from Vermont to open their rare book business on Worth Avenue. In 2021 they moved to the gallery space they currently occupy on Worth Avenue next in Via Roma and in 2022, Raptis Rare Books purchased The Harcourt Bindery, the oldest and largest book bindery in the United States. The couple once purchased for $1 a signed first edition of "Catcher in the Rye" near author J.D. Salinger's home which they sold for $80,000. Other rare books that have been in their collection include an original 1859 copy of Charles Darwin "The Origin of Species" and an original printing of "The Cat in the Hat" inscribed by Dr. Seuss. Books in their collection have influenced generations and shaped history and culture. The books here are worth thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars. In addition to selling individual books the couple will consult with rare book collectors to help them to build their libraries.
