My husband and I had an amazing time on the Sicilian wine sail! We enjoyed all of the wines and the charcuterie. Wines were well curated and well portioned. Plenty of seating/not overcrowded for the group size. The cruise provided beautiful views along Casco Bay. This cruise does focus more on wine education and tasting rather than sightseeing or geography which was fine for us as wine enthusiasts but could be disappointing for other tourists unaware of expectations. Our cruise in particular did go by quicker due to good winds which led us to hover/circle near the harbor. Would have been nice to see more sights.

I can't say enough about the Wine Wise sails. I just recently did the Wine and Oyster sail and words can't describe how amazing it was. It is quite expensive but worth every penny! We got 5 different wine pairings with 2 oysters to every wine. You also got an amazing sail boat experience. Erika knows so much about her wines and can answer any questions you have. The person who brought the oysters was super knowledgeable as well! They shucked them right on the boat and they were so fresh! The whole experience was so worth it and if I had unlimited funds I would do every sail!

With everything going on right now I was so happy to find wine wise doing wine sails. We had never done a wine sail but we do like wine. We met on the pier and had to social distance and wear masks while boarding. After our seats were situated we could remove the masks unless we had to use the restroom. It was kinda nice being spaced out all over the boat. They also provided hand sanitizer if you wanted it. Erica and the crew were amazing. We felt relaxed and highly enjoyed our time. We got to try five wines from the Mediterranean and enjoy delicious cheeses, salami, berries, crackers and nuts. I had never heard of any of the wines we tried but now I have a few new favorites as well as some good tips on pairing and what to look for. The weather was nice and it was all around a perfect excursion. This was a great thing to do on a date if you're in the Portland area.

Brunch Wine Sail, so much fun!

So grateful for Winewise during this time of social distancing. Erica's virtual wine dinners are as entertaining as they are delicious. A way to dine with others while staying home. Fantastic food with good wines is always a winning proposition. Sharing a safely distant meal with others makes it even more special now.

I truly enjoyed the Wine & Food Walk in Portland's West End. I have been to several wine tastings and food tours and I am always amazed to learn something new. Erica was very knowledgeable and explained things well for both new and seasoned folks. I especially like learning about the color testing. She related the wine tasting to apples and I thought that was a very creative way to explain things. What I also liked about this tour is that we got to experience lesser known wine regions. The food pairings with the wines were perfect. Although I didn't like the pate, it really bought out the red wine. I also got a change to taste food from some of the hottest places in Portland. The only thing I would recommend would be to add 2 more wines (we could have two at a couple of stops for example). I was really hungry for more wine and food after the tour. We when to the following places and had the following wines: Bolster, Snow & Co: 2013 Rosso Cocevola, Nero di Troia, Castel del Monte DOC, Italy (Nero di Troia) Hot Suppa: 2014 Camel Valley, Pinot Noir Rosé Brut, Cornwall, England (100% Pinot Noir) Local 188: Charles Hours-Clos Uroulat, Cuvée Marie, Jurançon Sec AOC, France (mostly Gros Manseng + Courbu) Chaval: 2014 Bogegas Albamar, 'O Esteiro' Tinto, Rias Baixas, Spain (Caino, Espadeiro, Mencia)

Erica breaking it down for us.

I had had a weary day. Just one of those soul-trampling, heart-hollowing days. I had been toiling since 5am at a yard sale, hauling out the remnants of my grandfather's home for strangers to pick over and peruse. I was dirty, I was sweaty, I was exhausted. I was two and a half hours away from Portland, baking in the sun, getting grumpier by the minute. Every time I sat down with an ache in my bones, that lactic acid scream deep in my muscles, I thought about how I would soon be on the water, drinking wine and eating cheese with my friends. It was the only thing that kept me from descending into madness on the trip back to the city. I rolled down my windows and tried to imagine myself in the glorious sunshine bobbing and rolling out at sea with a crisp wine in my hand. I had been looking forward to the Wine Wise Sail for weeks. I had the pleasure of going on one of the sailing adventures years before with my father, just a two hour jaunt into Casco Bay on an old schooner, and it was such a fond and happy memory. The gentle rocking of the boat, the crew scrambling around the rigging yelling inscrutable things at one another over the roar of the wind. I knew that I was in for a treat to be on board the Frances. What I didn't know was that the experience could be so much more incredible by being paired with a wine tasting-turned-course on Pinot Noir. We arrived at the pier early with a number of other adventurers, thirsty for wine and more than a little hungry. Adele, one of Frances' crew, greeted us and gave us the rundown of what we could expect, when we would board. She looked concerned, sounded almost motherly, when she asked if we had brought any layers. I assured her, puffing up my chest and setting my jaw, that I was a tough cookie and could handle a little bit of ocean breeze. Erica greeted us as soon as we boarded, handing out wine glasses and these ingenious plates with a spot cut out of the corner to hold the glass. Before we had even cleared the dock, she began explaining how the tasting would work, encouraging us all to load up on cheese, fruit, and nuts. This was more than just a wine tasting on a boat. So much more! Erica not only gave us delicious wines but she talked us through how to judge them in a gentle and informative, non-judgmental way. This is a woman that loves wine and loves to share her passion with others. Wine tastings can be intimidating, particularly for someone who is a novice, but Erica made it accessible. And she gave us delicious wines to taste and try, encouraging us to find our own voice to describe what we were drinking. I had so many light bulb moments, learned so many things about what I was drinking and what I did and didn't like about wines that I was able, just the next day, to go to the store and buy a wine with incredible confidence. This is a thing worth doing, whether you are a resident or a visitor. I cannot recommend it enough!

    Beautiful sunset!

One of the…read morebiggest draws was their $1 tastings, yes, just one dollar for a taste of their ciders, wine and spirits, which is really fun and makes sampling without commitment super easy. The service was great, our server, Courtney, was exceptionally friendly, helpful in guiding us through the selection, and made the whole experience relaxed and enjoyable. I want to note, as a point of context, that in September the production facility of Sweetgrass's main operation in Union suffered a devastating fire. Despite that, the Portland tasting room remains open and functioning, which is a testament to their resilience. On the tasting side the variety was solid, and the $1 price point made it easy to try a bunch of things. The ambiance is cozy and inviting. If I were to pick one improvement, I'd say the tasting pours felt a bit light compared to some other spots I've been to....not a complaint, just an observation given the price point and expectations. In all, Sweetgrass is a strong pick if you're looking for a laid-back, local winery/distillery stop in Portland with friendly staff (shoutout to Courtney) and wallet-friendly tastings.

Sweetgrass Winery & Distillery is a farm winery and distillery that opened in Union, Maine in 2005…read more It was founded by husband and wife Keith & Constance Bodine. Keith has been in the alcohol business since 1992, and he earned his MS degree in Food Science and Enology. Constance has been called the heart, soul and brains behind the business. She spends most of her time in the fields, gardens and barns that produce the various ingredients used for making their wine and spirits. Sweetgrass is Maine's first farm winery & distillery; using over 70,000 pounds of Maine-grown fruit and grain each year. The distilled spirits are hand crafted in old world tradition with a copper alembic, still capturing the full flavors of their gin, rum, and traditional apple brandy. A secondary tasting room and retail shop opened on historic Fore Street in the Old Port section of Portland in February 2014. In September 2025, a debilitating fire destroyed the Union facility. The Old Port location remains open, but the future of the Union location remains uncertain. My extended family and I visited Sweetgrass's Portland location this past summer while we were vacationing in Maine. While exploring Old Port, we walked past their window and I said, "Hey, this looks like a cool place!" We went inside and signed up for a tasting. For just $10, customers can choose any five wines, ciders or spirits to taste. The five that I chose included "Maine Hard Imperial Cider" (Dry Cider), "Blueberry Smash" (Semi-Sweet Dessert Wine), "Back River Gin", "Cranberry Gin", and "Apple Brandy". The latter was easily my favorite of the tasting, but unfortunately they had no more bottles for purchase. I plan on ordering some online in the future. I am so happy that I discovered the Old Port tasting room by chance. I felt really bad when I learned later on that the Union location burned down. I'm happy to hear that no one was hurt and I hope that they are able to rebuild.

We came to Maine very VERY early season (March 20th-24th) and were looking for something to do…read more Most of the area is still in full 'pre season' mode, with many restaurants and services closed, especially during the week. We found the walking Food tour on Viator and jumped at it - and boy were we glad that we did! Because of the time of year, my wife and I were alone on the tour and as such got to spend around 3 hours with our guide, Ray Sapirstein. Putting aside Ray's obvious love for Portland and food in general, he was a charming guy - keeping us engaged and entertained with stories about the area for the entire duration of the tour. Ray is a PHD trained historian and, as such, was able to fill in a lot of color about the area, going beyond the 'food' aspects of the tour, describing the 'hilly roads' which were sand dunes were covered up to build out the city. Add to that the fact that he took us to several places that we NEVER would have found via googling for 'best ofs' and would have been a HUGE failure to miss! Andy's Old Port Pub - a neighborhood bar (don't call it a dive, though in my mind it qualifies). Spend some time chatting with Thomas, the owner, and Steve the bartender - and had what I can only describe as the single best haddock taco I've ever had in my life. Do not judge a book by it's cover: this place is AWESOME. Great craft beer tap list, and a warm and friendly environment. If I lived in the area, this would be my regular. From there we went to Gilbert's Chowder house right next door - Ray was again right: don't sleep on the seafood chili - it was RIDICULOUSLY amazing. After that we paid a visit to the Harbor Fish Market where we got to see the recent catches, and as Ray pointed out the 'transparency' of the thing: fish are cleaned and prepped for sale right where the customer can watch, and all fish are labeled as 'fresh' (with VERY few pre-frozen exceptions). This is also the place to go if you want to buy Maine swag. From there we proceeded to Rigby House, an unassuming 'coffee shop and workspace' that Ray promised us had nothing short of the best lobster roll in Maine: I've had some good lobster rolls so I can't quite commit to that, but the bread it was built on was FANTASTIC, baked locally from one of the bakeries rated tops in the nation right in Portland. This stop came with either 2 samplers or 1 full pour from their 20+ menu. Don't miss the blueberry ale. It's a rare treat and again, came from Ray's love of his city. From there, we visited Dean's Sweet shop for a couple of truffles and terrible jokes, and then Fiasco's Gelato to round up our day - try the lobster gelato, it's weird and not something I'd necessarily do again...but glad to have had the experience. The whoopie pie gelato was top notch and the blueberry was one of the best gelatos I've ever had. For a 3 hour tour, with all food included, we were certainly full and happy. The walk was short - I don't think we wandered more than a mile in total - and when we were showing signs of being "Help me I'm not from Maine cold", Ray took us into Grittys, another neighborhood bar just for a warm up.
