Recruiting Sergeant - Great roast dinners

Me and two colleagues took a local's recommendation on excellent restaurants in the area and took a taxi out to the Recruiting Sergeant. Standard beers on offer, but the dinner menu was a very wide variety of local foods and interesting mains. If the waitress hadn't come, we'd probably still be trying to decide on meals. In the end, a cajun-marinated ribeye steak with ceasar salad, the seafood tapas (as a main) and baked fish of some sort. Check the pictures. It's a good thing we were warned to avoid starters unless we were really hungry, because there was a lot of food on these plates and we ate ALL of it. My steak was cooked perfectly and the nice tapas platter looked heavenly while my friend with the fish nearly liked the plate clean. We chose to skip desserts and finished off our beers. Which is not to say that the desserts didn't look tempting, we just didn't have room. Fabulous service, really good food, a decent price. What more can you ask for? We'll be back! Notes. No wi-fi. Really large beer garden in the back looked comfy for a sunny day.

Great choice of food on fixed day menu plus good beer and wine. My ribeye perfect and plenty of mussels as starter. Filled up quite quickly and served from 6-8 but we stayed till after 9 as did plenty of others. 3AA rosette so top restaurant and moderately high prices.

Ever the open minded traveller (and food lover) when I found out that I would be visiting the Wildebeest Arms a local popular gastropub run by a top local chef, I was excited! My excitement extended to elation when I learned that instead of Sunday brunch, Britts tend to enjoy something called Sunday Lunch, which is served in the early afternoon and most typically involves you consuming the traditional meal of roast beef with Yorkshire pudding - OMG! So take it from this Canadian, back home - in Toronto, there are a lot of places that offer a Roast Beef dinner, specifically Irish/English pubs, and you know what - they do alright by the tradition, but, more often than not, you're getting something overcooked and just missing a soul. I've never had authentic British cuisine before, and say what you want about it... but it's hearty, it's seasonal, it's delicious and just feels good! The Roast dinner/lunch special was about 20GBP if memory serves so in CAD $ that's about $35. Everything was incredibly tasty and cooked perfectly, however, some members of our party noted that sections of their beef was a touch over cooked. On the other hand, my order was perfection, my only complaint - and maybe it's the glutton in me, but the serving I received was much smaller than that of others at the table. I was a tad disappointed about this since it was the part of the meal I enjoyed the most. The size of my meat (pause for a laugh) aside, the entire meal including the YSP (Yorkshire puds), the potatoes and root veggies were all on point and cooked masterfully! I was feeling peckish still at the conclusion of my meal and somehow got talked into ordering another UK seasonal favourite for dessert - Sticky Toffee Pudding. OMG x2, this cake is basically like a piece of dessert concrete and if I had about 25% room left before, I was properly 45% over capacity following my consumption if it. But so worth every sinful bite, especially the to die for caramel sauce the whole dish sat in.. nom nom nom nom. I can't say I'll be back in Norwich in the near future again, but if you're traveling out this way and happen upon the Wildebeest Arms on a Sunday, add it to your travel plans Eatcrest Out

I would venture to say that this is the best restaurant I have ever eaten at in the country of England, and I do not forecast that decision changing! Weather you want a beautiful dinner for two, breakfast in the morning with a great cup of coffee or tea, or you want to bring a massive party in for catering, the Merry Monk is sure to make you leave feeling full, happy, and satisfied. We have been there several times now and have never been anything but impressed and satisfied when we came away. Food, staff, atmosphere is all terrific as you would expect. We are going to have our after wedding celebration here in June this year as we liked it so much. Adrian the chef / owner is a great down to earth guy who will do anything for you so you get exactly what you expect from the day. As for kids meals, we did ask, and yes it's the usual chicken goujons or fish fingers, but these are made with chicken breast and fillets of cod, not reconstituted cr*p. The food here is without doubt about quality, that is not to say that presentation and portion size has been compromised in any way.
