The first time I stopped by I tried some of their samples of vodkas and gins- the samples were very generous pours and I tried some spirits that I had been wanting to try for some time. Overtime I have stopped by I have been greeted with great customer service and friendly people. This is an exception in England- and I really appreciate it. If I lived here, versus sporadically visiting, this would be my liquor store.

Also, it has to be said that the enthusiasm and friendliness of the staff isn't always matched by their knowledge; there are other wine merchants nearby where I'd definitely take recommendations, but not here. I remember on one occasion asking about Meursault, and being told they definitely didn't stock it, by a member of staff leaning against a shelf with-you guessed it-a number of bottles of Meursault on it.

The selection is vast and has wines that none of the other big chain wine stores have. I particularly like their knowledge. I usually put all my trust in the manager and tell them your budget and get them to make a case or two. I have discovered so many amazing wines this way, wines that I continue to return to as well as lay down for a year or three for enjoying later. If you go buy a couple of cases, make sure you do a bit of bartering.

She also gave advice on decanting it to get the best possible flavours and for how many years it would keep. I also left with it beautifully wrapped and ready to give to the intended person. That's because Nicolas is a specialist wine merchant that stocks virtually only French wine, although other regions do feature in modest quantities. They also stock spirits, whiskies and champagnes. Great for picking up oddities, for example Rose Liqueur (which by the way makes an excellent aperitif with Champagne)

The PG shop in Battersea has a fantastic vibe- the staff are very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about wines. Oftentimes they may not be able to devote much time to any one customer as the shop tends to be very busy with lots of customers coming in. I've noted that many are returning customers. The revamp looks good and they have expanded their range of offerings. Wine buying isn't simply about buying a commodity - it's an information journey and forming an understanding about the customers wishes. I love their extensive range and they have some really excellent wines. The New World is well represented in addition to the established classic regions of Europe. Yes, there are some expensive wines, but that's a fact for everyone who wants to buy top class burgundy for example.

Philglas & Swiggot feels to me a lot like a wine shop from a bygone era. Given that the vast majority of the bottles are in the £20 plus bracket this is more than a bit frustrating as, if you are going to spend this amount of money on wine, you want to be very confident that your selection is going to be to your liking. Other wine shops solve this problem by either making the wine available to taste (step forward The Sampler and Vagabond) or with engaging customer service (Highbury Vintners, I salute you). To top it off, the wine is sold at top whack prices. For example, Philglas sells Chateau Musar's current vintage at £23.15. This is more expensive than Berry Bros (whose prices are not cheap by any means) and far more expensive than Majestic who currently sell it for £17.99. While I appreciate independent wine merchant's need to make a bigger profit margin than Majestic it is almost 30% more expensive to buy your wine at Philglas without any recompense of the kind mentioned above.

If I am not mistaken the shop occupies the space once occupied by wine merchant La Vigneronne. It is a short walk from South Kensington tube on the slightly charmless Old Brompton Road. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and happy to chat about wine. I had the pleasure of trying some interesting Canadian (!) wine from the Niagara Falls region that they were sampling. It was perhaps not the greatest wine I had but always nice to try. I also highlights the depth of the selection they carry. The South African wines are numerous and a lot that one cannot find in other places so good to explore new areas of South Africa. There is also a very good selection of French wines and interesting stuff from Portugal and Spain. The prices are decent but the 'cheaper' bottles do in general seem to be worse value then when looking at £15 and higher. A nice place but not worth a trip in itself unless you are on the look out for South African wines,
