a box of wine in a store

Wine Impression is one of the best wine shops in all of San Francisco. The owners are friendly and helpful, they have an outstanding collection of wines and many chilled wines/beers/bubbles "ready to go" in the cooler, plus unique and "hard to find" wines that other wine shops can't get their hands on. As a bonus, they are also funny and just all around good, awesome people. I am always about supporting shops with cool owners and a great selection. Today, in particular, I was searching for Beaujolais Nouveau and after being in another part of the city looking around and visiting other wine shops without any luck of this highly allocated wine that just released yesterday, Wine Impression delivered! I should've known that they'd have received one of the very few coveted allocations in all of SF and gone here first! Lesson learned! :) I was so happy to have found my wine, and buying from them was a pleasant experience as it always is. I left the shop smiling with my special little stash of wine. :) I can't wait to return.

Everytime I walk in there, I get sub-par service. There are plenty other places I can spend my money.

Rusty isn't "staff" per se since he's a part owner, but he did tell me that I was spending too much on an inferior bottle of wine my first visit.

They are a great retailer, very knowledgeable of wines old world and new. They have a fantastic selection. My issue is with their auction business, which I think they have very little they can do about it as they are taking the word of the sellers that the bottles have been properly cellared. Multiple Aubert Chardonnays (2014-2017) bottlings, top end, have been clearly past their prime despite being in the start of the prime drinking window, and one bottle that was very tired. So it seems to be less of the "rare bad bottle" problem and more of a systemic issue with some of their sellers. I'll change this review if other such start-of-the-prime-drinking-window bottles through K&L prove to show they are drinking well and increase the ratio of good to bad items. I have a lot more of these bottles to test. Edit: may 2026 - a few more Aubert Chardonnay's going back to a 2018 Eastside were opened and we're all spectacular, crisp and peaked. Our stats are much better now on the aging of chards through the auction. Changing to 5 stars.

Highly advise their in-store tastings and the staff can seem unapproachable at times but that's only because they're doing so much. Show up mid week and mid day and the staff will spend great time with you talking up vino. So if you are in need of a wine fix then K&L is the spot to hit. Cheers

(I live in Houston and my son & his husband live in San Francisco.) I visited with Mike, who listened to me closely and then steered me towards three bottles of tequila that were better than the brands I **thought** I should buy. He prepared a gift basket and thoughtfully threw in a small bottle of mezcal for our son to try. One year later: I 'chatted' with Mike again (their web site has a CHAT option that they monitor closely and respond to immediately) and inquired about Del Maguey mezcal options (his gift last year introduced my son to his new favorite tequila) and he guided me well. He asked Moose to contact me and together we created another terrific birthday basket. Both Mike & Moose are friendly, professional, incredibly knowledgeable, and very customer-service oriented. The shop's selection is quite large - if you are a fan of tequila, you will be amazed and very happy to stop in and/or 'chat' with San Francisco Tequila Shop! I had actually seen this place on Instagram long before I ever came to San Francisco, mostly because of their pre‑bagged drinks. It looked like such a uniquely city thing -- quick grab & go mixes already put together so you don't have to think about it. When I finally made it to the West Coast, stopping here felt like checking off a small bucket‑list spot. You notice it before you even walk in, bright signs in the window, stacked drinks, and that steady flow of locals popping in and out like part of their daily routine. Inside, it's tight aisles packed floor to ceiling with beer, liquor, snacks, sodas, energy drinks, and a random mix of everyday essentials you didn't realize you needed until you saw them. The pre‑bagged drinks were just as cool in person, and what really made it memorable was that they hand you a cup of ice when you buy one. Simple, but somehow makes the whole experience feel intentional and welcoming instead of just transactional. The staff was friendly and quick, clearly used to keeping the line moving while still acknowledging everyone who walks in. It's not a place you browse slowly. You step in, grab what you need, exchange a quick hello, and head back out to Mission Street. However, we treated it like a tourist attraction, laughing at the drink names, and hovering around while we each picked a drink. Not a destination shop in the traditional sense, but for me it was. Really cool to travel across the country and finally stop into a place I'd only seen online and it lived up to the vibe.

They have everything you could ever want from a corner store, including a surprising wine collection and way too many T-shirts and baseball caps. This place hits it out of the park in the selection department, five out of five. But the first few times I came here, the guy working the counter was very gruff with me. I like curmudgeonly types as much as the next guy--I'm crusty and rough around the edges sometimes myself--but the first time, it was like he was itching for something to start an argument with me about. I haven't had that experience recently, but it did happen more than once. They do a pretty good business, but it's never crowded in an annoying way like Mission District or TL corner stores can be and often are. The prices seem high for the neighborhood, but I've mainly bought soda here, and it seems like every corner store is ripping people off on the price of soda at the moment. It's right on the edge between three stars and four, but I'm feeling generous today.
