We love Windsor. Words cannot express our gratitude to all the admirable staff and teachers at Windsor for the wonderful work they are doing with our little ones. We nervously followed our inner guidance when we took the tough decision of moving our 4.5 year old in the middle of the school year to Windsor. We hadn't expected at all that the change would make such a marked difference in his overall growth and that too in such a short period of time. In a matter of weeks, he has become highly purposeful as a person and our experience with him during the time he spends with us (both after school and on weekends) is pure delight. He is busy reading books or creating interesting structures with blocks and magnets or playing with friends in an imaginary world. For us as parents, it is a huge change from the earlier experience of dealing with demands for watching television and continually seeking attention. We don't know what to call it, so we will just name it "The Windsor Magic". Our son loves the school, talks of his teachers with great respect and trust, sings songs all the time (in many languages including Hindi), has added extensively to his vocabulary and most importantly, made friends with whom he jokes, shares secrets, and wants to meet on the weekends. Windsor has been an absolute godsend for our family. Our son has been attending Windsor for half days for 3 1/2 years (since he was 18 months old). Originally we checked out Windsor due to its proximity to our home. We immediately fell in love with the place and Ms. Shanam who runs the Mary facility. (Shanam is Berkeley educated with an emphasis on early childhood development. And it shows - she is continually updating the school's approaches, her communication with families and the enrichment for the kids. A brighter, more caring and dedicated early childhood educator you will be hard pressed to find). Windsor is the best of all worlds: 1) a safe comfortable, homelike environment 2) offering tremendous enrichment opportunities - my son sings songs in english, spanish, hindi and mandarin (often times not even realizing it is a "foreign" language) 3) yet the learning balances among child self-exploration with just the right amount of structure (but far short of a rigid, drill-heavy academia) The best part is the outcome - we have a child that is balanced, well-adjusted, bright, curious, engaged, healthy and more than ready to transition to kindergarten later this year. Windsor has been instrumental to his development and an integral part of our family as a result. We will miss Windsor, the teachers, other children and families! The first thing that struck me about Windsor was their beautiful facilities. On the outside, it looks like the best-maintained house on the street in a convenient and lively part of Sunnyvale. Once you are inside, everything is so naturally bright, clean, and spacious -- unlike a lot of grungy preschools in the area. I can tell a lot of effort has been put into designing the interior. There are sun catchers, prisms, and colored bottles in front of windows to refract color across the rooms. Play areas are naturally themed, with wooden blocks, corn husk dolls, logs for climbing, rocks for building, etc. Additionally, there is a sense of community at this school, including their second location down the block -- for both the children and the parents -- and I really appreciate how the school makes an effort to create traditions. As a big kid myself, I always get a kick at the yearly fall festivals where someone in the school community, parents included, gets recruited to put on the giant purple dinosaur costume for the kids and become the most important person in the world for 15 minutes. (Have I ever done it myself? No comment.) In the end, my favorite thing would have to be the creative curriculum. Last time I dropped in, the preschoolers were busily constructing the city of "MountainView-SanFrancisco" from recycled materials. The 'city' took up half a room and had a hospital ('for both people and pets!'), a police station ('to catch bad guys so they don't ruin the houses!'), and even a factory that made bubble wrap ('for popping!'). How is that not adorable? I wish I attended a preschool like this when I was young, but I am happy the kiddos do! read more

Windsor school has transformed my kid! The best thing that has happened to our 3.5 year old! We toured many Pre-Schools in this area. While some of them were good, we didn't feel the energy and vibe at any other place like we felt at Windsor. All the kids seem to really enjoy the environment and have been active whenever I have visited the school. This is what a pre-school should be like - happy kids, engaging activities, and really amazing teachers. That's precisely the reason why we waited for the summer slot to open at Windsor, and were ready to risk admission to other schools in the hope of getting a permanent spot at Windsor. Within 3 weeks of my kid joining Windsor, we saw a lot of progress in him, and we are really thankful to Windsor. These are some of the reasons what makes this school awesome: 1) Its a happy place! You just have to visit them to know what I am saying. The kids are from such diverse backgrounds and the school encourages them to share their cultures. 2) Classes: Windsor offers many on-site classes: soccer, gymnastics, music. That is a great value add. 3) Parents' involvement: Windsor involves parents a lot in multiple events, weekly playdates, and has created a pretty strong Windsor parents' community. Very useful to rely on each other, and share experiences. 4) Super dedicated teachers: Loving, caring. Very experienced about child psychology. I have asked some of the teachers a lot of questions about my child's behavior, what I should be teaching him, etc. and they are awesome! 5) Director: Really cares about the best interest of your child. The amount of work she puts into designing schedules for each week shows her dedication for the school. The kids love her too. 6) Understanding of Child Psychology: Our kid was going through a rough patch as a toddler. We consulted the Director about this. She came thoroughly prepared with her analysis of his behavior along with a good plan that we should follow as parents. Really thoughtful. Before finding this preschool we had visited several schools and sent our child to two other preschools. This is the best preschool. The range of activities is huge: other than the typical curriculum offered in many preschools (drawing, phonics etc.), Windsor offers language classes in Mandarin, Spanish and Hindi (and yes students learn ALL three), many field trips (to the Fire Station, nearby farms etc.), vast variety of additional programs (for extra cost) like little gym, music (piano and drums), karate. They have an excellent set of teachers who approach teaching passionately transforming classrooms into meaningful learning. They have an innovative daily communication sheet : in addition to bulleted items, they really describe the elements of creativity your child shows in activities, discussions and/or expressing ideas. Our only regret - too bad we didn't find this school early. read more

We arrived a bit early and as we stood at the front entrance there was an overwhelming urine smell. I thought maybe cats or something urinated in the area. Well when they opened the front door I soon realized it was coming from the inside. We brought our daughter and the tour lady told us if she made too much noise she would have to leave. Needless to say I was not impressed. This is a preschool no?!? Well, I left and my husband remained behind. The "lecture" continued for an hour with no Q&A. Post school mission, examples of schedules and curriculum on website and leave the tour for parent concerns and questions. Waste of time and play area was less than impressive and building is situated on an extremely busy street. When I was looking for a pre-school for my daughter, I visited many, many pre-schools in the mountain view and sunnyvale area and finally found Windsor - a hidden gem!! My child started at Windsor when she was 2 years old and spent three wonderful years at Windsor - it is a fabulous combination of a home away from home with a really strong pre-school education. Windsor provided my daughter with a solid foundation from both an academic and social perspective. Can't ask for much more. Some highlights for us: **Passionate Director: Shanam is an exceptionally passionate director who has a background in child development and does all she can to make Windsor an amazing place. She takes feedback very seriously and works extremely hard to continuously improve the program. **Warm environment with a strong, progressive curriculum: I admire how strongly child-centered and hands-on the curriculum is and how it often takes shape based on where the children take it. Thats not easy to implement - but hats off to the Windsor teachers for doing a great job with it. To add to that, there is Nani, Shanam's grandmother, whose presence is such a calm, wonderful experience for the little ones. She is 100 percent present with the kids, reading, listening, hugging, playing with them. I remember how nani would read together with my daughter for hours as a toddler. The fact that Nani is there because she wants to be, not because she is asked to be there, is meaningful! **The communication booklet is wonderful. We love it and will treasure it for years to come!! My daughter enjoyed hearing what the teachers wrote. The thrill that was shared by the teachers when she began reading at 3 was SO evident from the logs and it reiterated for us how much the teachers care!! **Excellent Leadership program: The elder kids visit the location with the younger kids once a week as a leader where they have a special role and responsibilities. It has worked great towards developing the concept of "leadership" in my little one. I feel lucky to find Windsor at the right time. I found out about this school through Yelp, and when I read all those positive reviews, I felt that I should give it a try. I went to to web and sent an email. In less than an hour I got a phone call back from the director. Now my daughter has been in this school for about 2 month and I am really really glad that I choose this school. The first day I was really nervous, wondering if my daughter was crying, then in the middle of my day, I got an email from the director with a photo of my daughter's smiley face with her new friend. And when I picked her up in the evening, she was happily playing bingo with Ms. Amanda and her new friends. My daughter always tried to grab the card without saying the word. So every time Ms Amanda encouraged her to speak out the word loud before giving her the card. I could see that she was have a great first day. There are many good thing already mentioned by other yelp reviews, all of them are true. One of the thing I want to mention here is that the school provide lots great field trips. In just two month, they already went to Sunnyvale Library, pumpkin patch and some fire truck visit. I really like the idea that they organized the kids to walk to library and pumpkin patch. You can image how hard it is to do this, but they took the trouble and made it. The school provides lots chance for kids to express themselves: Every Monday each kid have a chance to talk about what they did during weekend. Every Thursday they share with their friends their own stuff. The teachers in the school are very creative. Recently they put some sign in sheet at the front door for kids to sign in themselves. Several weeks ago, they had the idea of stone soup and kids enjoyed it very much by eating lots vegetables... The school is really well organized, I never worry if I will forget any activities at the school, because the director will send out emails reminds parents to take actions ahead of time. I cannot say enough good things about Windsor. Our very shy child joined the McKinley campus as a three year old. Now, as an almost five year old, he's about to graduate from Windsor and the personality and confidence change in him is tremendous. I credit this to the amazing teachers. Here's what I love about Windsor (stay with me - there's a lot :-) ) Incredible teachers - many of the teachers have graduate degrees and they ALL really care for the students. They go above and beyond for the students who love them. Each teacher also brings something special and more personal to the children (e.g. specialized child social/emotional training, chef skills, sign language, academic and literary prowess, fun arts and crafts, yoga, and the list goes on and on) Unique teaching style - Windsor doesn't follow one teaching style, rather picks and chooses the best of all of them. What you get is a fun experiential learning experience for the kids. This ignites a love of learning and Windsor kids are generally far beyond their peers when they get to Kindergarten. Don't expect any rote memorization here (thank goodness). Rather, children learn while they are engaged in specific activities designed to support the curriculum. An example - students were learning about the seed cycle. They then went out on a nature walk to collect leaf samples to support what they learned and then threw in some math skills by sorting the leaves, counting them, talking about "fewer," "more," "equal", etc. They also helped plant seeds and brought some home to plant as well. The only "homework" we had was exposing our kiddo to all different types of seeds in fruits and vegetables at home. He was SO excited to share what he learned and continue that learning at home. Field trips - Learning in the classroom is one thing, but actually taking children to Trader Joes so they understand supply chain is something else. The field trips really inspire the children and augment the classroom lessons. Community - Windsor families are really engaged in their children and the school. This lends itself to a wonderfully rich and close community of families + teachers. We've made great friends through the formal and informal family events such as Thursday playdates in the park, back to school picnic, fall festival, Holi celebration, etc. In addition, many of the families share their own customs (e.g. country specific traditions) or areas of expertise (e.g. geology, physical therapy) with the students on Tuesdays when parents and grandparents are invited into the classroom. All of this helps the children feel even more connected to the school and their classmates. Communication - Windsor is great at this. Beyond parent teacher conferences, Windsor goes above and beyond with daily communication books, weekly roundup emails and photos, weekly planning emails, Facebook posts and more. And they are always open to having a conversation with any concerns. For example, the teachers were so helpful in giving us advice related to how to prepare our son for a new sibling. This was not part of the school curriculum, but was so helpful. Passion - this shows in everything that Windsor does. They care. Really really care about the students and the families. And it shows. If you're looking for an amazing preschool unlike any other we had toured, this is it. The Mary and McKinley campuses are small and very approachable for the little kiddos. Today was my son's first day for the very first time in preschool! I as well as my husband were so nervous and concerned as we looked around for childcare and believe it or not Windsor Academy was the 4th or 5th place we saw but the best all around - any where! I am so grateful and see this as a total blessing to have found this place. I have such peace of mind at work knowing how well he is being taken care of and how much fun he is having. Here is a portion of an email I sent them after our visit ... "Today we met with Shauna regarding our interest in your academy and we were more than impressed with not only the atmosphere of the preschool but also the persona Shauna displayed. It is evident that she has a love for children in addition to a knowledge that certainly surpasses any childcare provider we have ever met. This school appears to offer not only the perfect balance of academics and creativity in a home like setting but a diverse staff and enrollment of children where cultures and backgrounds are celebrated and embraced. We strongly feel that these elements are important in the upbringing of our son and have sought after such a preschool as this." I truly ment these words and wanted to post them here. I found out about this school through Yelp and I can say all the positive reviews are true. I enrolled my 4-year-old daughter full-time in this program several months ago. This school is located in a residential neighborhood and is very safe. The school provides an excellent curriculum for the little ones and this was the biggest selling point for me. I had read somewhere that children are like sponges, especially during their first five formative years. The school expose children to Mandarin, Hindi, Spanish in addition to English. Recently, my daughter came home and started happily singing in Mandarin! My daughter also developed a strong liking and started taking an interest in reading here. They encourage children to learn science and be creative through their field trips/guest speakers and maker programs. Maker programs are where the kids make something (my daughter made a crane she was very proud of) out of various materials and recyclables. My daughter was fascinated by the visit from the ophthalmologist and later drew a picture of it, showing all the little instruments used by the eye doctor. The school provides an option for kids to enroll in a couple extracurricular activities (like gymnastics, soccer, karate, piano, vocal lessons) of their choice, which are separately paid for and conducted within or around the school campus. Before my daughter signed up for enrichment, the thought of having to plan it all out and take my child around town for various programs was a daunting one. But having these opportunities at schools means, not only that my daughter could try new experiences while surrounded by her friends, but also that it was less hassle for us. The school provides the kids with nutritious food, which is a big relief to busy working moms. They also provide milk in the evening as part of snack. My daughter was never hungry or cranky when on her way back home. Most importantly, the teachers genuinely love all the kids and kids are greeted with big good morning smile and hug. As a result, my daughter was eager to go to school and wanted to go there on weekends too. I had to leave the country for a family emergency and therefore was forced to withdraw my daughter from the school. When I explained this to the director, she was really kindhearted with the whole process. Ms. Simanti, who teaches in the school, actually went out of her way to meet with me on the weekend to explain to me how to teach my daughter phonics, so that my daughter can continue on her learning path overseas. With a safe facility, rich curriculum, and dedicated staff, this school would definitely be my pick if I have to enroll my daughter again in a preschool. read more

we still remember the day we left our 2.5 year old at Windsor- McKinley after all the research, consultations for a good preschool in the area. He is 5 years now and we are happy beyond words for choosing Windsor as part of our son's and our lives. My approach while I was looking for a preschool isn't JUST academics. I wanted my son to ENJOY his childhood while also developing his social, motor, and behavior skills. And glad to say, we found all at Windsor. Starting from their beautiful, well maintained home like facility, fantastic teachers including Nani (grand ma for so many kids for the past several years). Their unique programs like Reading dogs, trips to local bakery, fire station, dental office, zoo. grocery store, pet store makes Windsor unique from the many preschools in the area. It's the passion ( not just the business) they bring in every single day. Windsor staff and administration is always there for us when we needed their support and assistance in terms of my son's development skills. They are always creative in addressing any issues. At the end of the day, all kids to love to wake up in the morning and go to school. Windsor's in-house kids enrichment programs is a huge plus for the working families. Any description is short for the staff and admins for their passion, creative ideas towards kids enrichment. My son goes to Mary now and looking forward for a great academic year ahead.Many times when i pick him up in the evening, he asks me to stop at McKinley facility to say hello to staff ( especially Nani and "Sagil" [That's what my son calls Mr Sahil] ). I feel it gives him sense of community and belonging. To me, that explains how much he likes his school. Last but not the least, the parents group at Windsor is simply superb. Our son has been at Windsor for 6 months now and he loves it. I visited many preschools in Mountain View/ Palo Alto and while some of them seemed good -- I wasn't blown away by any of them....until I visited Windsor. The vibe and energy of the teachers and kids was contagious and I knew I had to send my kid here. It was a long wait to get in (that was the only problem with the whole experience). But I must say it was well worth the wait. Within a few weeks of joining Windsor we saw a lot of change in our son. In the last 6 months he has matured a lot. He has become more articulate and is also learning to control his emotions. All the kids seem to really enjoy going to school here. They have something to look forward to each week. Thanks to the monthly schedule planned and executed by the director and teachers. They have multiple field trips which teach the kids about so much outside the classroom. As a parent of a 3 yr old I care more about how my son enjoys his childhood and learns to "love learning new things" more than bookish and academic knowledge only. The love of learning is the best gift for a child and he/she wil pickup the rest. I feel this school does a very good job here. The weekly community playdates makes it easy for a new parent/child to get to know everyone. Parents can also come in to teach the kids once in a while which has led our son to learn about the cultures and countries of many of his classmates. I have often consulted the teachers about any behavioral concerns and have received excellent advice from them -- a true indication that these teachers are well experienced with child psychology as well. The school does a good job of retaining the teachers. Almost all other preschools that I toured had substitute teachers in atleast one class who seemed to not know the kids (and vice versa) as well. Another plus for us is the extra enrichment classes onsite like gymnastics and soccer. For my son who just loves soccer this is a big win -- I do not need to run around on weekends trying to find a good soccer class (and good luck finding one that has the same teacher and same set of friends each time). read more

Overrated, expensive home based day care - claims to be a preschool! I sent my daughter here in 2009-2011 and pretty much was forced to withdraw - we continued to think it will get better but it progressively got worse. Pros: Central in Sunnyvale Cons: Expensive - for a home based daycare with the quality of curriculum and teachers offered, the fees are very very high. Teachers are under qualified and some "helpers" substitute as teachers for months. Campus - which is a house converted to a school - keeps undergoing construction, so parents have to continually adjust to sending their kids to temporary locations. The day care make no effort to compensate parents for all the inconvenience. Overall, for this cost of tuition you will be better off with a much more standardized private school like Stratford or Challengers. read more

They have a great mix of play based curriculum, field trips, exposure to various languages and enrichment classes. My daughter started going to this place , when she was 18 months old. She was not even talking then. Shanam and her crew of caring staff took my daughter in with their arms open and till this day (my daughter is 3 now) we have not had a single moment of regret for choosing this place to provide care for my child. I can understand if they are busy or are completely full, but please have the decency to say so. I've contacted a ton of preschools in which all have responded in a timely manner except for this one. This school has been a great experience for us. Its a play based preschool that follows a whole-child, emergent curriculum. I visited a LOT of preschools all the way from Los Altos to San Jose and everything in between before enrolling my children here - and we have not had cause to change our decision. Its got a lot going for it, that I couldnt find all in one place elsewhere: - healthy, nutritious freshly made hot lunch and dinner - lots of outdoor play - they visit the park every week, spend almost 2 hours outdoors everyday, take frequent nature walks along the neighborhood and have atleast one field trip every month - very child-centered play based approach - very multi-cultural - children do dragon dances for chinese new year, celebrate the holi in spring, go caroling in the neighborhood at Christmas ... - they introduce children to multiple languages - children are exposed to spanish, hindi, mandarin in addition to english - they have a lot of extra-curricular activities - piano, drums, soccer, gymnastics, karate ... - kids are really, really happy here. - they have a mixed-age philosophy and frequently bring older kids to interact with the preschoolers (and now have an after school program for KG and 1st grade kids). - they are serious about healthy eating habits and work a lot with the kids (esp the picky eaters) on exploring different foods, and talk about nutrition etc. I have seen this work with my own children who are very very picky but are now getting to eat balanced meals. The things that make it great: - Very dedicated staff. Every teacher knows the personality of every child and works hard to make everything balanced and fun. The director, Shanam is very dedicated and is on top of the latest in education - and she shares her learning with the parents in addition to using it in the classroom. - There is a LOT of communication - there are both daily notes for every child and quarterly parent-teacher conferences, they connect parents who can help each other when children go through major transitions (for instance, Shanam brought the "alumni" parents to talk to all kids who are about to enter KG so the "graduating" kids and parents know what to expect. When children go through sudden anxiety or tantrums, they dont freak out - but rather connect parents to each other so they can share and learn from past experience etc.) - They are really serious about emergent curriculum. They tailor their entire curriculum around what the kids show interest in at that time - for instance, when one of children expressed an interest in police officers, they spent a whole month on community helpers - did a field trip to the police station, all their daily reading around difference community helpers, got the postman to visit the school and talk about what he does, got relevant books from the library for all their reading, etc. - their field trips are integrated into the curriculum, and every month has a theme - if they go to the farm, they spend the whole month on animals, habitats, role of farms, gardening vs agriculture etc. Kids really get a LOT out of the field trips without knowing that they are learning. - there is a lot of parent involvement - parents volunteer for field trips (we get a lot of great photos from one parent who has taken it upon himself to be the unofficial photographer :)), they share their family traditions and also their passions - one of kids brought his grandma (who was a librarian or school teacher, I forget which) to school and she spent a half day reading to the kids, older siblings visit and spend time with the kids sometimes (which the kids absolutely love) - They are very good with feedback - they take parent suggestions very seriously and act on it. Actually there is a lot more going on, but my review is already getting too long. Most of all we really feel that our children are in a safe, happy place with caring teachers where they are constantly exposed to experiences that broaden their perspective. Its a young school, and there have been some administrative hiccups occasionally, but the quality of care for the children has never been compromised and they take feedback very openly and seriously. We are very happy to have our kids attend Windsor. read more

After touring local preschools in Sunnyvale, we picked Windsor for our child given the home based atmosphere, location, and friendly staff. Our child recently graduated after attending Windsor for about five years and in that time period, they've matured and developed in many areas and is now attending Kindergarten. We believe that Windsor helped shape our toddler into a very well rounded child and appreciate all the care and attention in doing so. This is a new school and the owner, Shanam, seems very enthusiastic. Nice clean facility with lots of activities for kids. very impressive.

Our daughter has attended Windsor Academy for the past three years. She started at Windsor when she 2.5 years old. Windsor is an exceptionally magnificent pre-school. The care and love the teachers and staff have for the children became abundantly clear to us on our first visit there and was the key determinant in our decision to enroll our daughter in Windsor. The primacy of the needs of the children and deep desire, driven by genuine caring, to continuously improve the curriculum to provide the most appropriate environment for the children has been the feature that has made us continue to send our daughter to Windsor. The environment at Windsor engages the children and helps them develop academically and socially. Our daughter, at the time of enrollment, was an only child and my wife and I had taken time off from work to be with her. She was a strong willed and challenging child. The nurturing environment at Windsor has molded her into an excellent communicator and problem solver (both socially and academically). She still retains her opinionated nature (which we very much wanted to nurture and mold) but does so with empathy towards and caring for others. Her ability to communicate effectively was greatly encouraged and developed at the school. She is now a confident and nurturing child - Windsor has a leadership program with their sister school at McKinley that pairs older children in leadership roles with younger kids. This program has greatly helped further develop our daughter's social skills and confidence. Windsor makes a great deal of effort to plan events and field trips for the children to augment their curriculum. Their field trip to NASA in conjunction with space learning week was a great hit with our daughter. Similarly field trips to local farms, ice cream parlor, pizza shop, pet shop, library etc. coupled with learning the process of making ice cream, pizza and learning about animals provides the children with hands on learning. Extra-curricular activities such as karate, piano lessons, soccer etc. have also greatly enriched our daughters experience at Windsor. Windsor has a reading learning program where kids read to guide dogs. This non-judgmental environment has tremendously enhanced our daughter's reading skills. These kinds of innovative approaches are what make Windsor a uniquely appealing environment for the kids. The staff Windsor take exceptional care in recognizing and encouraging a child's talents. Our daughter loves to draw and teachers have continuously challenged her to explore and develop her talents further by using new and unique materials etc. They encourage her to explore new things and she loves dressing up for "whacky Wednesday, making funny pony tails etc. The school also does a tremendous job of encouraging collaborative activities. Our favorite recently was when our daughter spent several weeks with her classmates designing and building a mock city - their discussions regarding how much open space to have and where to put the trees etc. displayed deep thinking and insights on part of the children. Our daughter has developed a love for learning and exploration and the self confidence and belief to execute that should hold her in good stead as she grows up. The parents at Windsor are extremely involved with the activities at school and it's a wonderful community. We have made several wonderful life long friends. The support structure for moms at Windsor is really wonderful and there is a recognition that when both parents are working they have severe demands on their time. The teachers and staff at Windsor are always aware of this and go above and beyond what would be normally expected to accommodate the parent's constraints. The teacher's are very thorough in their communications (daily communication sheet) and meet with parents individually on a regular basis to discuss our child's needs and to solicit feedback. The best endorsement of the school was given by our daughter recently when unprompted one morning she exclaimed "Mommy I love my school". read more
