I actually reviewing the brew a beer day they do at the windsor castle brewery.
I got given the experience as a present, and after reading the writeup on sadlers website was quite looking forward to the day. But it was quite a big dissappointment.
The person leading the day was a young lad who obviously normally mixed the brew. Although he was very nice he could not answer any questions about how brews where decided on, what ingredients did what to the flavour or any detailed questions about the brewery.
We loaded malt and wheat from bags into a hopper, then where left in the bar for a couple of hours to entertain ourselves, then came back and shoveled the waste from the vat and where left in the bar for a couple of hours. Then added the hops, back to the bar, and then the yeast. Then when we where presented with our 'personalised bottles' we were asked which 2 bottles from the bar fridge we wanted, none of which where the brew that we had just made.
The whole day gave me no impression that there was any pride in the brewery, any desire to show that the brewery is making a good product and will continue or anything. And the brew a beer day was just a way of bringing in a few hundred quid extra for the brewery without them having to do anything for it, in fact the contrary, it just ment the normal brewer didn't have to do so much lifting and shovelling.
Sorry Mr Saddler, the beers were nice, but I certainly wont be going out of my way to find Saddlers beers!
If anyone else thinks of going on this day, buy a book on brewing instead, you'll get more from it. read more
