This is a lovely relaxed little place which is perfect for a gentle bite and a relaxing stroll. Would it be bad to admit that I generally gravitate towards this place when hungover? Basically they do a big, cheap fry up which is just the job. And what better way to walk it off than by taking a quick stroll to see exactly where your food came from? They also serve up simple soups, baguettes, etc and when the weather's nice they've got a nice big outdoor area with a view of the farm. This lovely little place is under threat of closure at the moment, though, so you may need to get in while you can. read more

I love Windmill Hill City Farm, I visit at least once every couple of weeks with my daughter. She loves looking at the ducks and chickens, goats, sheep, pigs, rabbits and the lovely calves who are being reared for veal (a meat I am incredible passionate about) The farm has a lovely little cafe which sells light meals, sandwiches and jacket potatoes, where possible they use produce from the farm and all meals are very reasonably priced. There is also a really lovely playground with a great sandpit and climbing tower for bigger kids. The farm is free to visit but I always put a couple of quid in the collection box as it is run by volunteers and is funded by donations. read more

Love the city farm, it's an amazing community resource that doesn't charge for entry (they rely on donations), the cafe does really nice affordable food with a lot of the ingredients sourced from the farm itself, kids meals are really cheap - £1.50 for beans on toast. I love bringing my daughter here, we normally visit a few times each week to see the animals and have a bite to eat, she absolutely loves it here doesn't matter if it's sunny or raining there's always something to do from splashing in puddles to playing in the adventure playground. read more

A fantastic place for a day out in the summer, Windmill Hill city farm is perfect for the little ones and big kids alike. There's a pretty little cafe where you can enjoy home baked delights, and an array of farm animals to gawk at, and if you're lucky, pet. You'll find the farm in Bedminster - where I swear everyone has a baby - but still in walking distance of the centre. Like Henry says, this place was under threat, but thankfully they recently managed to reach their £50K target, so the farm will live to see another summer at least. read more

Bristol's Windmill City Farm is a grow-bag of inspiration for kids that want to discover that not everything they eat is made in supermarkets. It's a place where parents can chill sitting under the Rowan trees having a well-priced lunch, while watching their free-range kids waddle around with ducks and get at one with nature. There's a homely, unkempt feel to the organic allotments and a diverse range of farmyard animals wander around Serangeti-like. Outside the cafe you'll find a phalanx of kiddies highchairs signaling a warm welcome to families, inside you'll see sun-bright yellow walls and strawberry patterned tablecloths. With prices set at the farmer's gate you'd be hard-pushed to find anything over a four quid from the main meal menu. My banana cake and coffee cost about £2.00 and the muscovite duck making eyes at me didn't even get a look in for the crumbs on my plate. read more

There are goats!! I love goats! They also have horses, pigs, geese, sheep, ducks. After a tour around the farm you can stop in the homely cafe for a tasty hot beverage and a sarnie or jacket potato. Its a very popular place for mums to bring their little 'uns to. Windmill Hill City Farm is an independent community project and relies heavily on volunteer support. The Farm runs numerous courses in arts and crafts (including jewellery and stained glass) permaculture, indian head massage. It also offers Horticulture courses and is a great opportunity for those wanting to return to work to volunteer and study at the same time. There is lots to see and do at Windmill Hill City Farm, though personally, I go to see the goats ;-) read more

I love the idea of city farms. They offer a little rural escape right in the middle of it all, with loads of animals to fuss over. Windmill Hill City Farm is a small community-based farm project with a nice little café and a good range of animals. While I suppose it's primarily aimed at children, I've visited without kids and enjoyed every minute of it, stroking the goats, scratching the pigs, and following the waddling ducks to their pond. For city-dwelling animal lovers without the time or space for pets (or a smallholding!), this farm is a lovely place to spend an hour or so. On my last visit, I had a hearty bowl of soup and a slice of cake, watching the animals roaming about outside - but on a summer's day you can eat at the tables outdoors. If you live in the area, Windmill Hill City Farm also runs courses with the Workers' Educational Association, such as computer, arts, crafts, and farming courses. read more

If you approach this place as less of a farm and more of a community centre you won't be disappointed. There is a strong commitment to providing activities and services that appeal to a range of needs. It's a great draw for children with a well equipped adventure playground. There is also a programme of courses that range from stained glass to IT skills and support. Different groups meet here aimed at reducing isolation and improving mental health. The cafe and shop are a bit hit and miss but when the weather is fine it's a great place to sit and have a drink. The main problem with the farm is that there are very few animals and aside from the allotments not much in the way of farming activity. read more
