Before I found the Tesco at Eastville Retail Park was closer to my house I went to a big Tesco somewhere in the South (Bedminster/Southville area). On my way, I used to see signs for HorseWorld - and was always slightly intrigued by what I might find there. I almost expected to find a world run by horses! Sometimes these children's adventure playground type places are much of a muchness, once you've seen one indoor drop slide, you've seen them all! HorseWorld really does have a lot of horses, which perhaps sets them apart a little. They offer homes to discarded working horses and other horses, ponies and donkeys in general need of love and attention! Prices are reasonable at just under £7 for adults and under a fiver for kids, and there certainly is a lot to do there! read more

The horses were very very tall. They were very well trained and would sit or roll-over at the command of the "chief horse whisperer". Some of the other jockey's were taller than I expected and some seemed to have not even entered puberty. I suspected foul play and that some may have been taking performance enhancing substances but I bit my tongue because we weren't racing after all. In the end I didn't ride a horse (as I mentioned they were VERY tall.. about as tall as a small shed) but I did stroke one and it didn't kick me. Apart from the cheats it was a fully enjoyable day and when I got home I made myself a medal. read more

For animal lovers out there who've exhausted the possibilities at Bristol Zoo and the usual children's farm parks, Horseworld is a charitable rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming centre for horses, located in the Whitchurch area of Bristol. Some are retired working horses, others were rescued after being neglected or treated badly, but all are well cared for now. The shire horses are gentle giants, one of them with an eye missing, and you can also visit donkeys, pigs and a few other types of animals. Many of them are wandering loose around the courtyards, welcoming fuss from all the visitors. There are scheduled talks about the horses, showing off a few tricks they've learnt, and children can go into some of the stables to groom the Shetland ponies. Open daily during the school holidays, but only from Wednesday-Sunday at other times. There's a small, mediocre cafe on site for a snack and a drink; the entry price isn't too steep (£6.95 for adults, less for children); and you know it's going to a good cause! read more

If you like horses you'll love this place. If you don't you still might. Its a charity that looks after old and out of work equines. One 46 year old horse (I know I didn't know they lived that long!) wanders around drooling all over the place. Like many people I know after a good night out but he is very friendly to boot! Great for kids as they can get up close and pet the horses and ponies and theres lots of space to run around. The staff are really friendly and helpful and will tell you all you need to about their work and the animals. Great surroundings, picnic facilities, a nature trail, adventure playground, cafe (nice food comes at a price), plenty of parking, and activities throughout the day. Even ferrets, goats and chickens to chase! Very good value for a day out, especially if you have kids (but thats not a necessity). read more
