I've stayed at all kinds of places out here: BnB's, hotels, even the Grand. Windermere is my favorite. It's a beautiful building, very original but with nice modern bathrooms. The porch is spacious (porch sitting being an important aspect of Island culture!). True, the breakfast is stingy, but I just look forward to lunch. I do not feel that hotel breakfasts are supposed to keep your tank full till dinner! The prices are reasonable. The people are super nice. The relaxed atmosphere is non-headachy. The bedding (not just the mattresses but the sheets, pillows and blankets) are superb. Plenty of hot water! Actual bath TUBS! A million dollar view! And--no small thing--this is about the cleanest place I've ever been in. I don't know how they do it, really, but it sure makes up for the mini-doughnuts! Unlike many Mackinac establishments, their pricing is totally transparent and visible on their website. They are honest business people, and you deal w someone w authority, not a minimum wage employee in a boiler room when you call w inquiries. You never feel that you're being gamed. read more
