Our next stop on our foodie adventure in Wilson, North Carolina visiting family. We went to the Wilson donut shop. My grandparents frequent this place every weekend so we had to check it out. I ordered a few donuts, the chocolate covered cream puff they call it. It had chocolate glaze and a sort of fluffy buttercream inside. It was a little too sweet for my taste, but it was tasty. My favorite was the strawberry jelly that only had powdered sugar on top because a doughnut is so nice and fluffy with the homemade strawberry jelly and not too much sugary glaze on top. But I highly recommend getting the little donut holes that have the blueberry mixture in it. That was the The Best doughnut they have in my opinion. For fall, they had cute little pumpkin shaped cinnamon sugar donuts. For breakfast, we ordered a bacon egg and cheese croissant because they were out of biscuits, but I hope to try those another time. My husband also ordered a biscuit with fried steak. And it was very fresh and made to order. But it definitely needed some sauce or ketchup or something to help with the flavor. Everything was such a quick service and got all of our food to go. The best part is the prices of this place is very good and you could feed your family of 4 for under $30. read more

I like the buzz and aroma at a good local donut shop. This place had both. The donuts were incredible. Doughy, well fried, perfect. Sprinkle donut, perfect. Strawberry puff, excellent strawberry jelly, excellent dough - Powered sugar was just crisp enough, shaken when still hot - well done. Cinnamon roll - delicious, be warned, it's giant. They have a full grill also, and the full menu is available all day. We grabbed a couple chicken biscuits for a later lunch. Biscuits, fluffy, chicken juicy and well seasoned. About 15, 20 min from the interstate - well worth it. Some parking in front. They also have a drive thru. read more

Spoiler Alert: I am not a big fan of doughnuts. My daughter brought home several different kinds of doughnuts from this shop today. She had regular glazed, chocolate glazed and one with cream filling. ( She got more but that's all that made it home!) We cut all of them into pieces so we could try them all. I was hesitant, but started with the cream filled one. WOW!! I was shocked at how good it was. I could have eaten at least two whole ones.... Next I tried the glazed one. Again I was so surprised at how good it was. Not greasy, dough had a great flavor on its own and glaze was just enough. I only got one bite of the chocolate glazed one because my grandson inhaled the rest. It was his favorite. It was very good as well. It had green sprinkles on it and it would have been excellent even without them. We ate them all so fast I didn't get a picture, but I can guarantee you I will be visiting this shop every time I go to Wilson. They made a doughnut fan out of me! read more

This is an absolutely wonderful place and a mandatory stop if near Wilson/a place to put in regular rotation if within a 50 mile radius. It's clean, the staff pleasant and just take a look at those donuts. They speak for themselves. First up - Remove the previous review? Absolutely not. It will give fellow Yelpers something to read while munching on lil ol Wiltzen's Ace in its back pocket, and they may possibly thank me for being the nudge needed to give Wilson Doughnut Shop a chance, or two (or even three like we did) if merely closed for reasons that defy you-the-reader's logic: These donuts are worth the effort. Nothin worth having comes easy, right? Right. Besides, I'm not a Karen. If they're not open when you stop by, it's ok to be sad, just don't give up. Now that we've established the hours and days of operation may not make sense to some - donuts/doughnuts; tomatoes/maters. Interchangeable and of no relevancy. Right away you'll notice that is not Hershey's chocolate or some store bought crap chocolate-flavored, corn syrup industrial mess drizzled over the donuts. This is chocolate how chocolate should be done. Not too sweet and not too bitter that all you taste is cocoa. Of note: If you associate Hershey's, Godiva, Ghirardelli or any other main stream mass produced 'not chocolate but called chocolate' product with what chocolate is supposed to be like, the color is going to be a little off putting to you. Live a little. It's good. The actual dough? Dense and just the right amount of greasiness to drive home the fact these are made fresh on site every morning. The Long John's were good enough to fight over so get two if you have any respect for fellow man: These were built for sharing. Actual cream filling and not some low brow jello pudding mix - I was impressed. The enormous honey buns and cinnamon rolls are included in the price for a dozen so let your "I wanna try em all" run wild. Nuke em later in your microwave and slice like a pizza after supper with a cup of coffee. The most visually appealing were the strawberry filled which are the most difficult to pull off in the land of donut snobs. Great dough they have down which is half the battle. The filling? Well...Really good as is. I am far from convinced that was entirely made from scratch using even frozen berries and a basic gelatinous base for a proper jelly filling BUT I wouldn't turn one of em down. Working with nothing but what they already have, should they ever combine a Long John and a Strawberry Filled donut to make one Chocolate Strawberry something or another? Whew I'mma be one broad back havin... Nevermind. Y'all, go. Get a dozen, minimum. You will not be disappointed. God willing and the creek don't rise I will be back. read more

I love donuts. I know the location of every donut shop - past or present - in a 7 state area. There are actually some states that really don't have donut shops - I rarely visit those states. Getting the picture? I love donuts. I am picky about my donuts. I dissect them (on my first visit) the way you used to do a frog in 7th grade biology. Icing - too much too little too 'glazed' too sweet too chocolately too much powdered sugar - in other words, there should be a perfect ratio of topping to donut. And please - no sprinkles. (Unless you just keep a few around for the kiddo's.). If it's' filled - is it homemade custard/creme/jam OR some disgusting stuff bought in a box and loaded into a pastry bag. AND Do I get a bit of filling with each bite of donut? Finally, the donut itself. Structured enough to carry off the fillings and toppings - or just a hot mess when you try to bite into it? Yes, I love donuts, am picky about my donuts and I know what a perfect (not good, not ok, but perfect) donut is. If you want to know too - go to Wilson Donut. Get the chocolate long john (NO it is not an ECLAIR) OR a plain cream filled (not the glazed cream filled) OR a powdered sugar topped raspberry filled. Ok, and at least 6 glazed donut holes. I am standing at the counter for a good three/four minutes with 5 ladies standing behind the counter yapping away and despite the fact that several made eye contact with me several times no one had sense enough to ask if they can help. My morning breakfast ritual: head to work, pass through Starbucks and pick up my Venti bold brew, extra hot so it can last a detour to the Wilson Doughnut Shop to pick up a fresh batch of yeast dough doughnuts/donuts. My coffee order from the drive-thru is "no pump, no cream, no sugar," because the fluffy yeast dough rounds are more than enough to balance the coffee. Whenever I get to the office early I usually swing by and pick up a dozen to share with my group; and the folks who run the place seem very accommodating, because from 7:00 to 8:00 you can usually find the "Hot" neon sign lights up, so to give the morning working folks, such as myself, an excuse to make that drive. read more

Super cute doughnut shop! We tried a chocolate eclair, lemon filled, cream filled with chocolate and a cinnamon roll, everything was fresh and just the right amount of sweetness. My only complaint was there were raisins in the cinnamon rolls (who likes raisins?!) The decor was so cute and the bathroom was really clean. I also love the Bible verses...Jeremiah 29:11 is my favorite and it was posted on the menu board. Where do i begin... the donuts at this place are simply amazing! The donut holes are pure legend in Wilson. They have soo many options for the dessert case, but this MAY depend on the day & time. For example on Friday afternoons, you may want to get there before 4pm, otherwise they are pretty sold out until Saturday morning. EVERY donut I've ever had from there is FRESH. You can tell they are made daily. No leftovers here. The owners are there a lot and are physically hands-on type owners, out front helping customers, down to helping take out orders & you can tell this is not corporate run. Not only that, they are truly GOOD, loving people. (You can taste the love in the food) And now to the food: they serve breakfast & lunch all day. I'm a breakfast junkie, and it's southern style food, not frozen or anything like fast food does of course. Same goes for their lunch. Burgers, Hotdogs, Fries, House Chips, all made to order and fresh! There is a good menu for variety but i don't stray far from my usuals. They have lunch Combos too! Entree, Side, Drink & a Sweet at a great price! I have been eating here since i was young enough to remember how old i was! Please give this place a try if you haven't before. My parents have been living in Wilson for over 10 years and I never knew this place existed until the past week. What a hidden gem! So glad I found this little hole in the wall. The service was spectacular and the food was awesome. I only had a chocolate chip cookie and a Long John which reminds me of an eclair, but tasted like a chocolate cream puff. There are sandwiches available for order as well, but I was only looking for the sweets. I'm heading back home on Monday and will definitely pick me up a donut before heading home. This was an amazing doughnut place. The doughnuts themselves were soft and fluffy and unbelievably delicious. The place itself was adorable, with murals and flowers, it had a great atmosphere. Amicable staff and a straightforward selection of doughnuts and biscuits on the menu. Not a lot of variety, but it does appear that the doughnuts are handmade. That said, when visiting around 11 on Saturday morning, we were told they were out of biscuits, and were given our country ham on store-bought hamburger buns. They also claimed they were out of cinnamon and honey buns, but we later heard them take a phone order for two of each.
